Double Overtime Thriller… If you were looking for a little enjoyable hoop, this one was an epic summer time battle between young stars and various summer league randos.

The Lakers pulled out to a first quarter lead off a 16-0 run, largely behind some good D and Svi. Mykhailiuk was on fire from the start, showing a range of tools and that sweet shot. Both he and Josh Hart carried the bulk of the load without Alex Caruso in the starting lineup. It was back and forth all second half. The Cavs picked on our drop coverage for jumpers. The Lakers relied on their two big guns. Both Svi and Hart would hit the 30-point mark before heading into overtime.

These are short, 2-minute overtimes in the Summer League. With 36 seconds left in overtime, the Lakers down 3, Hart found Rathan-Mayes open on the wing for a three to tie it up. Tied again at 105-105 with 20.9 seconds left in the game and 17 on the shotclock, they called a timeout. Hart attacked on iso and was fouled with 5.7 seconds left. He made one FT. On the other end, we fouled and the Cavs made one FT. On to double overtime.

Rathan-Mayes struck again, finding Ayres for a dunk after scooping up a loose ball. He then would score a key layup on a drive to push the Lakers ahead. They held on to the 112-109 win to advance to the finals.

Hart -- -- This game was more of a give-me-the-damn ball effort from Hart where he was just going to try to take control for the Lakers. His handle has definitely opened things up that weren’t there before for him. His change of directions off the spin move is looking like a consistent deadly weapon. He seems to pull that out a couple times a game and usually score off it. The defense was really loading up on him as the game went along. That’s not something he’s used to (nor something he will likely have to deal with a lot in the regular season). He’s looking extremely confident in that three shot. If guys sag off him, he’s just drilling pullups in their faces. He and Svi started off strong and gave the Cavs fits all game. Hart had 14 points on 5-11 shooting (3-7 from three) in the first half. They both had 30 in regulation. The freethrow shooting was a bit iffy down the stretch, nearly costing the Lakers the game as he missed the front end of a couple clutch ones. Just reminds me of the challenges we will face from the line during regular season this year. Good battle with Sexton when those two matched up. The Stats: He scored 37 points on 13-28 shooting (5-8 from three) to go with 9 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 6 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He missed a three off a handoff. He tried to pass the ball instead of hitting the FT line pull-up, turnover. He overpowered his man in the post and drew FTs, he made one. He sank a pull-up wing three on iso. He spun around a big on a drive and scored a layup. He missed a three, we got it back to him and he attacked for a layup. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He beat a man to a spot to draw a charge. He skied for a rebound, but missed a tough turnaround corner three. He missed a drive through traffic, getting blocked on the finish. He missed a three straight away. He drained a deep two-for-one three. Second Half: He airballed a step-back elbow jumper to start the half. He rejected Sexton’s iso drive. He attacked left but couldn’t finish the layup. He pulled down a board, pushed it out and muscled through the D for an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He drained a wing three in early offense right in his man’s face. He missed a deep pull-up three (gathered with his right instead of usual left). He was blocked trying to power up in traffic over a big. He was stripped trying to drive through defenders in transition. He sized up his man and sank the pull-up three over him. He missed a deeper a three next time down. He iso’d, attacked hard to his left, spun quickly to lose the defender and scored the layup. He swished a pull-up three next time down. Late on the rotation but he went down properly to draw the charge and get the stop. He popped out open at the top of the arc, but went up off balance and missed the three. He made a tech FT. He stripped a man and took it all the way for a layup. He missed a three when a man went under the screen. He missed a tough corner three with the shotclock about to expire and a man on. He curled into the lane off a screen and muscled in a layup. He missed a deep three with a couple second left on iso. Overtime: He attacked quickly and scored a layup around a big. He kicked to Rathan-Mayes for an open wing three. He attacked to his left with 5.7 seconds left and was fouled for FTs, he made only one to take a 1-point lead. Called for a foul with 3.3 seconds left. Overtime2 : Intentionally fouled with 4.7 seconds left up 2, he made one FT. He took a foul to give with 2.5 seconds left and fouled out.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He came out smoking with a three off a pushout. Then hitting Ayres for a dunk by going between a defender’s legs with the bounce pass. That’s a certain level of poise and execution that you don’t really expect someone to pull out in the summer league. He had 16 points on 6-10 shooting (4-6 from three) in the first half. The Cavs really tried to ball deny and trap him in the second half. He was pulling multiple defenders but was still able to find cracks of daylight to score. He had some off-ball work to get open, including slipping a screen to cut down the lane and take a pass to score. These are high IQ reads and make him more unpredictable. Normally expect the spot up shooting. There was a play in the first quarter where a big cut down the lane, drew the D and that left Svi open in the corner for a three. He knocked it down, given the space. That kind of thing you imagine happening all the time. You can picture a rolling big like McGee running the two-man game and drawing a defender on a tag and leaving Svi open in the corner for a kickout. He also showed that tough to cover step-back tonight again as he stepped back into a three on iso. Ridiculous. Excellent handles on that sequence as he went between his legs on the step-back. Overall, that’s an area that he could still use improvement to help get more separation. He’s good with hesitations and some spins off screens to lose defenders. But he doesn’t quite have that explosiveness of, say, a Manu. Defensively, they tried going at him in the post. I don’t think it was terribly effective at the end of the day, but you can see where he needs a little more strength to hold position. Kid took it to another level tonight. Absolutely a steal at 47 and just killing it. It would seem like he’s got a battle getting time with all the more experienced guys ahead of him on the roster. But it’s also probably like one of those situations where once he gets into the rotation, you can’t pull him out of there. The Stats: He scored 31 points on 12-20 shooting (6-11 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He scooped up a loose ball, pushed it out and hit the pull-up three. He hit Ayres with a bounce pass between a defender’s legs for a dunk. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper (sort of a floater, actually). He threaded a pass between defenders to Ayres for FTs. The D collapsed to the middle to help on a rolling big, Svi took the pass in the corner and knocked down the three. He drained a deep wing three cutting to the ball and rising up on the catch. He spun off a defender to run him into the screen, rose up and sank another three to force a timeout. He attacked the paint but couldn’t finish the layup. He missed a wing three popping out behind a screen. Quick rotation in transition and he drew a charge to get a stop. He threw down a long lob pass from Rathan-Mayes (about from half court) on a counter strike after a made basket. He lost the ball trying to break down the D, turnover. He missed a deep three. He pulled down an offensive board but missed the putback. Second Half: He missed a pull-up wing jumper. Great slip screen and Ayres found him for the dunk. He drew and offensive foul on his man as he fronted him in the post. He iso’d at the top of the arc, dribbled hard to his left, went behind his back on the dribble then stepped back to the top of the arc and drained the three (so good). He missed a corner three in transition. He swished a pull-up wing jumper over a big on a switch. He hit Ayres for an open jumper. He took a handoff at the top of the arc, quickly rose up and swished the three with a man trailing. He crashed the glass, grabbed a miss and put it back in with his left. He missed a tough fading three from the wing coming off the screen (needed to square up better). He was fouled with 1:19 left, tie game, he made one FT. Put in a tough situation forced to create with 3 on the clock he banked in a fading jumper from the top of the key with 31 seconds left. Overtime: He couldn’t hit the 60-footer at the buzzer. Overtime2 : Nothing to report.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- Really looking better by the game. When it was on the line in OT, he came up huge. He sank a big three with 36 seconds left to tie it up in the first overtime. In the second overtime, he had a killer layup attacking with speed and scoring around a big. That was key as the D had been really occupied with Hart and Svi. The change of pace of having the ball in his hands at the right time put the Lakers over the top. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-11 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 9 assists, 2 turnovers and 5 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He was fouled on a pull-up at the FT line, he made one FT. He worked the two-man game to setup Ayres for a dunk. He pulled up off the weave and jump passed to Ayres for the And-1 dunk (great read). He attacked from the wing and missed the short runner. He missed a pull-up jumper. He attacked with speed, drew the help and fired a pass off the dribble to the corner for three. He attacked off a screen and was stripped. He missed a step-back elbow jumper on iso. Perfect 45-foot lob pass to Svi for the throwdown. He attacked off a screen and kicked to Hart for the three. Second Half: He crossed over and missed the pull-up 16-footer. He forced a pass into traffic, turnover, dunk the other way. He forced a pass that wasn’t there on the perimeter, turnover. Short on a pull-up after he couldn’t keep his man on his hip. He banked a runner off glass after working off the screen. He sank a pull-up elbow jumper after getting scored on at the other end. He missed a pull-up three with the clock low. Good job on the final shot of regulation to force an airball. Overtime: He was tapped on a layup attempt. Huge clutch wing three on a kickout from Hart with 36 seconds left to tie it up. Overtime2 : He scooped up a loose ball and hit Ayres for the dunk. He attacked with speed and scored a layup around a big.

Ayres -- -- The Cavs were really attacking him. His drop coverage tonight was pretty ineffective anytime they would pull up for the jumper. He was never able to get a good challenge in on those. When they went away from that and tried to attack him at the rim in the double overtime, he smothered them. A couple of key stops as a result. Offensively, great job from the FT line. He also hit a couple jumper from there, as well. The Stats: He scored 20 points on 6-8 shooting (8-9 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He dunked off the screen-roll with Svi. He missed a 19-footer. He dunked off the two-man game with Rathan-Mayes. He drew FTs on a pass from Svi through defenders, he made both. He threw down an And-1 dunk off the roll off the weave, he made the FT. He stepped in and drew a charge on help D. He hit Williams rolling for a layup. He pulled down an offensive board and reset the offense for a score. He was fouled on the offensive glass for FTs, he made both. Second Half: Bad kickout on the short roll, out of bounds. Nice read on Svi’s slip screen to hit him for a dunk. Moving screen, turnover. He faced up and sank a 16-footer straight away. He sank a FT jumper off the pick and pop with Svi. Looked blocked by the rim on a throwdown off the setup by Svi. He kept an offensive board alive. He blocked a drive out of bounds. Overtime: He was fouled on a short one in the paint with 1:37 left, he made both FTs. Overtime2 : He smothered a drive to force a miss. He dunked off the interior feed from Rathan-Mayes. Another smother on the drive to force a turnover. He was fouled on a defensive rebound, he made one FT.

Williams -- -- Not very effective offensively, missing just about everything he took except for a layup setup by his fellow big. I notice I have a lot of trust for him defensively when guys are trying to score under the hoop. He is very disruptive with his length there. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-9 shooting (0-2 from three) to go with 6 boards, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 36 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He blocked a perimeter shot. He missed a tough turnaround off an offensive board at the end of the quarter. He stripped a man on the perimeter. Nice recovery under the hoop to force a man into a brick and shotclock violation. He rolled to the hoop and Ayres found him for the layup. He missed a layup on a cut in transition. He was fouled on the offensive glass. He faked a handoff, but missed the point-blank layup on the drive. He bricked a three straight away. He blocked a shot but couldn’t control it to give up a score. Second Half: He airballed a corner three. He missed a drive trying to create against the shotclock. Overtime: Nothing to report. Overtime2 : He missed a right floater trying to create against the clock.

Newman -- -- A few more minutes for Newman tonight. He was more effective when he took what the D gave him. When he tried to create or make something happen, he forced it without results. Have him spot up with others who can draw defenders with more consistency and you might be seeing some better results right now. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-6 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He missed a pull-up midrange jumper. He missed a pull-up three on iso. His pass off the two-man game was picked off. He chased down a loose ball and hit the short pull-up jumper. He sank a corner jumper off a kickout. Second Half: He forced up and missed a long wing jumper with a man on, poor shot selection after we got an offensive board. He attacked and was blocked with ease.

King -- -- His worst game of the bunch. He was kind of a weak link defensively. Combine that with the inability to score tonight and they limited his minutes for bigs making more of an impact. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-5 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He missed a wing three. He missed a baseline pull-up. OC on a drive and he was easily blocked. Second Half: He missed a three trailing the break, got it back and kicked to Carrol for the three. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He missed a full-court heave.

Holland -- -- Not much to this one. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 offensive board, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He got turned by the D on offense, then blindsided by the help for a steal. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Carrol -- -- Solid second half in this one, hitting a long jumper and also scoring an And-1 putback. He was probably the best of the bench tonight. The Lakers struggled, though, when they didn’t have someone who could run the PG out there with some of the bench guys. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards (2 offensive) and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He missed a forced three in early offense, not a good look. He missed a deep three. Second Half: He sank a wing jumper on a kickout. He deflected a pass and was fouled trying to chase it down, he made one FT. Great job muscling in an And-1 layup on the offensive glass, he made the FT.

Bonga -- -- Not much to this one as his minutes were limited severely with some foul-prone play. The Stats: He didn’t score or shoot and had 1 board and 3 fouls in 2 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He got turned by the D on offense, then blindsided by the help for a steal. Second Half: He did not play.

Thanks DB. Great stuff.

I am so geeked up on Svi. And on the whole squad.

It's finally coming together for us. Yeah!

Thanks DB! Summer League Championship Game again tomorrow!

Kudos to Hart and SVI. NBA bound for SVI.

Also - I thought I noticed yesterday that our dreaded Number 6, Rathman Mayes, was starting to improve his play. Today pretty much confirms it. He was clutch af down the stretch. I still hate how the offense stalls sometimes with him, but his decision making in OT was very good.

Ayers - good journeyman filling in for Mo.

Really like Williams' defense.

Definitely not NBA level yet, but these guys are competing out there and it's good to see them stepping up with each successive game. Again hats off to Miles Simon.

I hope Caruso can join up for the title game tomorrow.

It's great we reached the finals without Wagner and, now, Caruso.

Thanks DB

Svi keeps showing more each game. What a steal.

Hart is the man he has improved tremendously in 1 year. Last year all he could do was get hurt.

This makes me excited to see how much Kuz, Lonso & Ingram have improved.

I sure Randle has grown a lot too wish we were going to see it.

Got to watch this game. Funny how into I was. Basically our summer league team is three guys and some warm bodies. Good win.

Thanks DB!

Kudos to Simon and his staff for getting the results they have with injuries to Moe and now Caruso.

This game provided some good late-game experience. Now we have one more for the SL title.

Go Lakers!

I must say that apart from the good play from our squad,
Sexton on the other side of the ball is for real. A good game
last night !

That was an extremely fun game to watch. Can't wait to see Hart, Svi (and Mo) play with LBJ & cast in the regular season.

Great game! Was literally as excited as I was watching an NBA finals game (with the Lakers playing)!

As much as I was impressed with Hart and Svi (definitely agree with DB SVI needs to work on getting separation), I was just as disappointed with Bonga. 3 fouls in two minutes? Really? And they were such silly obvious fouls! If Miles could have gotten ANYTHING productive out of Bonga I doubt this game would have gone to OT.

Ayres does a lot of good things on the floor, but he went brain-dead with his perimeter defense at the end of the 4th. With the Lakers up by 3 towards the end of regulation, he left his man wide open on a pick and pop. Not too long after that, he sagged way off of Sexton and gave up another 3. As a vet, he should know the score and understand that you have to run guys off the 3. He has done a great job of filling in for the injured Wagner, but I know Moe would've provided better D in those situations.

What a fun game to watch! Really ilked Svi and Hart last night, Svi Particularly as I can see how easily what he’s doing in SL will translate to the NBA (Not the ballwork so much as the spot up shooting and the quick shots off of screens). I thought that hart was good, but I don’t think he’s the kind of player that can carry the load offensively for stretches in the NBA. Even in this one, he had a few sequences where he just tried to do too much and got turned over or put up horrible shots.

With Bonga, he’s young...and really bad...i’ve Been pretty discouraged by what i’ve Seen in the SL, he doesn’t seem to have a good feel for the game and doesn’t have any discernible NBA skills.

Time for the championship game, will be a tough one .

Yeah, he got stuck in no-man's land a lot. In the double OT, the Cavs attacked him at the rim and he came through.

Definitely wish we had Wagner out there. Would have been some good experience for him (assuming we covered the same way with him out there).

He's definitely not the type to take over a game on iso. But I do think if the ball moves and with more a little more spacing he will likely see next year, he's going to be a lot more effective. He gets any kind of room right now, he's killing it.

Yeah, you can tell Ayres is very much a traditional big. It seems like guarding the 3 doesn't register at all with him, but he does a good job of protecting the paint. One of Moe's strengths as a defender in college was showing and recovering back to his own man. I think he's just wired to protect against the 3 in a way that Ayres isn't.

Even with Hart's improved iso scoring in summer league, it's obvious that it isn't the strength of his game. However, he's going to feast off of LeBron's gravity as a spot-up shooter and attacking closeouts. Hart is going to make teams pay for running him off the 3.

Agreed. Last season, there were games where he played quite a few minutes and didn’t score and didn’t really put up too many shots since he’s not great at creating his own shot vs. NBA talent. With Lebron’s gravity though he should get a lot of good 3pt looks and is developing the ability to really make defenders pay for closing out too hard on him.

One thing I did notice last night is that his man D was pretty poor. I know he is a good defender, but I don’t remember him getting beaten off the dribble so frequently in the past. Might have to do with fatigue or just the fact that he’s not a great cover on small/speedy PG’s.
