On to the Semi Finals… With LeBron on the sidelines, the Lakers pounced on the Pistons early, extending to a quick 14-3 lead after a few minutes.

Once again, Josh Hart set the one on both ends as the Lakers imposed themselves over the Pistons. Hart’s two-way game led to multiple Pistons turnovers and layups for the Lakers.

The Lakers lost the second quarter as they saw a 23-point lead trimmed in half. The starters restored order in the third and were able to sit out the fourth and rest up for tomorrow as the team cruised to a 101-78 win.

Hart -- -- He set the tone early with 12 points in the first quarter. He sank a three to start, then attacked the paint relentlessly. He’s so strong, he just muscles his way through contact for score or FTs. He’s definitely feeling much more confident in his ability to get to the rim off the dribble. In transition, he had a Euro-step that totally sent a defender one way while he went the other. The better play, however, might be the pull down of the board and quick push out to hit Svi for a layup. His ability to change ends off the rebounds will help keep the Lakers pushing that pace. Defensively, he was a menace. Just not making it easy on guys as the Lakers locked down and forced turnovers. Simon said he’s a “winner,” which is something the Lakers put a lot of value on. He mentioned he’s the kind of guy you want on your team for a long time. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting (1-5 from three, 5-5 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 foul in 21 minutes. He was a +22. The Action: He sank a deep three when Svi found him off an offensive board. He left a man nailed to the floor off a Euro step and scored the layup. He slapped a ball off a man on help D to get a stop. He slapped down a pass jumping a lane, saved it back inbounds, got it back as he headed down court and scored over a defender. He attacked quickly off the three line and powered in the And-1 lefty layup, he made the FT. Nice hit ahead to Svi for a layup off an inbounds. Change of directions off the dribble and he drew FTs, made both. He missed a step-back three. He attacked the paint and missed a layup, but Ayres tipped it in. He took a handoff and scored a layup off a couple long strides. Bullet outlet to Svi for a dunk. Second Half: He missed a pull-up three. He attacked in transition, muscled through two defenders and scored a layup (could have been an And-1). He missed a stepback at the FT line. He deflected a pass off a defender to get a stop. He stripped the ball from his man and was fouled. He missed a break-rhythm sideline three in transition. He curled into the paint to his left and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He missed a pull-up three on iso. He attacked in early offense off the catch, spun to his right and drew FTs, he made both.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He showed the well-rounded game today. Not just hitting from the perimeter, but getting to the rim in a variety of ways, both in the halfcourt and changing ends in transition for breakaway scores. I loved the aggressiveness, and he led the Lakers in scoring in limited minutes. “He’s kind of like a quiet assassin out there,” Simon said. That’s the way he’s been playing most of the time and sometimes it feels like we forget to integrate him into things for stretches. Today, he imposed himself a little more onto the game. Pretty solid defensively, as well, except for one ballwatching sequence. Definitely feels like you could just plug-n-play with him. You can just picture the ball finding him as LeBron’s gravity draws attention and Svi relocates or takes advantage of scrambling defenders. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 7-15 shooting (2-5 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 2 assists and no fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +23. The Action: He swished a pull-up at the FT line. He splashed down a corner three on a kickout. He was blocked on a reverse after turning the corner. He found Williams cutting for a score. He leaked out and had his layup goaltended. He forced a big into a missed, deep turnaround on a switch on D, then got out on the break, filled the lane and finished at the rim. He missed a pull-up three in early offense. He took an outlet and slammed a few seconds later. Second Half: He missed a short turnaround off a cut. He missed a stepback wing jumper. He attacked right and missed a tough drive. He buried a three right in a defender’s face. He flashed to the ball off the down screen and missed the three. He attacked and fed Ayres for FTs. He missed a deep three. He pushed out a rebound, Euro-stepped around a defender and scoring with his left. He missed a step-back baseline jumper. Nice feed to King on the slip screen for FTs. He pounced on a fumbled dribble to knock it away and force a turnover. Quick first step off the catch to get past his man and he drew FTs, he made both. He ballwatched and gave up a layup (after a good defensive sequence to force a pass). He split the D and drew FTs, he made one.

Caruso -- -- Once we’ve gotten over those turnovers that we saw in Sacramento, this team has been rolling. The Lakers had 24 assists and 12 turnovers today. Meanwhile the Pistons has 12 assists with 16 turnovers. The Laker D has been making life difficult for opponents in Vegas. Caruso scored most of his points off one 4-point play just before the first half, hitting an And-1 three off a pushout with 0.1 left on the clock. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-5 shooting (1-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 19 minutes. He was a +11. The Action: He swished the floater after putting his man in jail. He kicked to Svi for the corner three. He found Ayres cutting for a layup. He missed a floater. He attacked and was given a turnover (should have been either a foul or Laker ball instead). He missed a scoop in traffic. He pushed a ball up and hit the And-1 pull-up three with 0.1 left on the clock, he made the FT. Second Half: His pass was deflected for a turnover.

Ayres -- Apparently, the others call him “Gramps” in the locker room because of his age. “The fire and the passion he plays with really rubs off on our group,” Simon said. He’s definitely showing ability to be that deep-bench big that a team could use in case of emergency. He was hitting the boards hard as well as opponents on screens. He also showed some range with the baseline jumpers off kickouts. Even showed some nice passing from the high post. Steady on challenges at the rim, he’s filled in for Moe well and kept the team chugging along. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-9 shooting (2-2 from the line) to go with 10 boards (6 offensive), 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a +13. The Action: He missed a long jumper when the D left him. He missed a short one at the front of the rim. He missed an up and under with his left. He took the high entry and powered in a layup. He sank a baseline jumper off a kickout. He cleaned up Hart’s miss on dribble penetration. He kept a possession alive on the glass. Nice screen in transition to free up Caruso for the three. Second Half: He drew FTs off the drive and dish from Svi, he made both. Nice challenge on help D to get a stop at the rim. He sank a baseline jumper off a kickout. He hit a guard backdooring his man for a layup.

Williams -- -- Very active around the rim. They set him up for a couple of lob finishes off screen-roll sequences. He scored on a putback and a drive to his right. He uses his length well on both ends. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-7 shooting to go with 5 boards, 1 assist, 1 block and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +24. The Action: He smothered a man on the perimeter then blocked his shot. On the other end, he missed a 19-footer. He cut strong side and hit the righty runner. He couldn’t throw down over a defender off pick and roll. Good challenge in the post to get a stop. He threw down the lob dunk off the screen-roll. Another lob throwdown off a screen-the-screener sequence that transitioned into the pick and roll out of a timeout. He stopped on a cut and it led to a Caruso turnover on a pass that would have found him. Second Half: He was swatted on a putback. He crashed the glass to pull down a board and score the putback.

Rathan-Mayes -- -- Good mix today of being aggressive for himself and finding teammates. Some nice sequences to team up with Williams on the two-man game for lobs. Overall, good minutes with not as much ball stopping. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-9 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He crossed over and missed the 18-footer. He hit Williams rolling for a dunk. Out of a timeout, he found Williams again for the lob dunk off the two-man sequence. He scored a layup off the change of pace. He missed a pull-up wing jumper short. He was fouled on a step-through, he missed both FTs. He pounded the dribble and finally swished a baseline jumper. Second Half: He attacked and threw a pass away getting caught in the air. He missed a heave at the buzzer. He attacked and kicked to Ayres for the jumper. He split defenders and reversed. He missed a fade from midrange next time down. Nice backdoor cut on his man to score a layup. He attacked his man and muscled in an And-1 over a defender, he made the FT.

Bonga -- -- Man, it’s felt like he’s needed to spend time in a league to get ready for the G-League. But he finally showed some signs of life at the tail end of this game when he hit a three and also stripped a man on D. Maybe those are just enough to give him a little more confidence. He did trying to hit an iso jumper after working the dribble well shortly after that. Anything he can use to build the confidence will help right now. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: Foul diving for a loose ball after he and Ayres couldn’t connect on an interior pass. He bit on a fake on help D and took down a player for FTs. Second Half: He nearly banked in an open three attempt. He didn’t hesitate a few seconds later when he got it back, knocking down the wing three. He attacked and missed a layup in traffic. He stripped a man on the other end and quickly threw it down court for a score. He crossed over between his legs and missed the pull-up.

King -- -- The perimeter shot wasn’t falling but he did a good job getting to the line. He was active but not as effective as usual. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-8 shooting (0-2 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 2 turnover sand 2 foul sin 21 minutes. He was a -4. The Action: He picked up a loose ball, wheeled to his left and banked a fade from midrange at the end of the quarter. He kicked out to Ayres for an open jumper. He crashed the glass and cleaned up the dribble penetration from Holland. He attacked a crowd and missed. He missed a deep three. He blocked a shot from behind. He missed a pull-up from three. Second Half: He drew FTs on a slip screen when Svi found him, he made both. He couldn’t finish at the rim. He attacked off a kickout and scored a layup. He missed a throwdown attempt on the break.

Newman -- -- Good to see him get a few minutes. I guess he’s not really playing for anything right now since he’s got the two-way, so they have been resting him from his injury. He was able to knock down a three and score a layup in his brief stint late in the game. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-3 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 3 minutes. He was a+7. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He scored a layup on a leak out. He swished a wing three in early offense. He missed a layup after attacking off a hesi.

Carrol -- -- “I think he’s an NBA player,” Simon said afterward. He hasn’t gotten a lot of minutes and didn’t really have a standout game, but Miles appreciated that he’s been working hard and staying ready for opportunity. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-8 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. The Action: He scooped up a loose ball and scored with his left. He missed a deep three. He swatted a shot on one end, then charged on the other. He was called for a push off foul using an off arm to clear space. He attacked off a kickout, got away with an extra step and scored a layup. He attacked from the corner and hit a fade across the lane. He airballed a pull-up at the three line in early offense. He missed a sideline three on a kickout next time down. He clanked a deep three on iso. He finally swished a wing three left alone in transition.

Holland -- -- Not a lot of notes. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: Change of directions to lose a man, but he missed off glass (King cleaned it up). Second Half: He scored a layup trailing the break and cleaning up a missed dunk. He missed a sideline three.

Thanks DB! Interesting - these guys are starting to get used to playing together, it looks like to me. Happy to see the bench able to close the game and even extend the lead instead of giving up 20 at lightning speed. Far better ball movement than just 2 games ago, particularly Rathman-Mayes. Williams is starting to find his game down low, and he's actually not bad as summer league guys go.

The defense stood out to me the most, though. Both starting and second units showed some good solid defense at times.

Summer League is so hit-and-miss for all teams, but these last 2 seasons have been loads of fun. Hopefully 2 games to go!!

Every time I see him set his feet so quickly, get shot off, and nail it I start picturing the same thing.
