If that’s what you were trying to say, then I agree with that completely. Particularly cause AD/Klutch forced their way here giving us leverage. The amount of control we gave up in our future draft capital was ridiculous. The narrative of unnecessarily giving up too much in the AD trade is one I definitely subscribe to.

As for salary matching for AD where it was necessary for us to trade BI/Zo to create a max slot. That’s just not true. We didn’t HAVE to do that to etch our a max slot.

In order to maximize cap space for free agents, you always use the space and then trade for a player as an above the cap team. The #4 pick went out as $0 in salary aggregation while taking up a 7.1m caphold on our books towards free agency. The best way about the AD trade was to use the capspace and then trade for AD using the #4 as a salary aggregator to salary match. That way you use the pick more efficiently (as outgoing salary to spare other assets) and you don’t have AD’s deal leak into cap space.

But we couldn’t talk Griff into waiting.

The funny thing is we could have had Tatum, Ingram, LeBron, the kids and the Picks...

@deal if you mean kids as in DLo, Jules, JC, etc then I can’t fault our FO for that cause who knew Bron would come alone. Even if we stretched MozDeng, that would have been 14m in dead cap till 2023. That’s the only way we etch out 1 max slot without trading away any if the kids....and still we needed to shed a lil more cause Bron was a 35%max player vs a 30%max player in 2018.

We needed to offload some salary to make it work, so we dealt Nance with JC (and got the pick that turned out to be Moe) along with DLo with Moz (and got puck that turned out to be Kuz) to create a 35%max slot, a shade under 30%max slot and still holding onto Jules’s 12.4m RFA caphold.

Where I have a gripe with the FO is we just dumped Jules, even tho dude was restricted and we dumped the rest of our kiddies on low cap holds for money that eventually went to paying Green, Kcp and McGee more this past summer...yikes!

I’m a big fan of BI and no doubt Tatum is going to be a legit 2way star in the near future, but I still deal both of them for AD, but in doing so the mandate is to hold onto more assets.

I love our star duo...I’m not in love with our “others”. But I do agree with one element in your reasoning @deal...if we dared the Pels to not pull on a lesser deal, the we could have gone to use our max slot for someone this past summer and still have all those kids/assets as trade bait to go get another star or even AD at this season’s trade deadline. Get Griff to finally flinch haha.

Why is this even a discussion? We never had Tatum. Never even looked at him. Might as well talk about Zion because we were only 3 spots away.

But what's real is we have AD, LeBron, the power of Klutch and the best record in the West.

Guys. If only we had FULTZ.

Then we wouldn’t have to play Rondo

It is tantalizing to think about. The best of both worlds would be Bron, AD and Tatum right now. If we had Tatum, maybe we could have gotten away with dealing BI, Kuz, Hart, 4th pick, etc. Push comes to shove, if you have to, you give them Tatum and keep BI.

I really wonder if the Pelicans would have been fine with Kuz instead of Lonzo, but that we pushed to keep Kuz, and had to throw in some picks for that honor. LOL!

I'm pretty sure we would have mis-developed Tatum too. And then you have LBJ/Tatum/BI and someone is not going to be happy and for sure misdeveloped.

Lakers were terrible at developing our young guys, and our young guys just needed time (which the team felt it didn't have). In short, we were a pretty poor location for three #2 picks.

I would take a flyer on him next season. We just need a 3&D wing.

Zach LaVine said on First Take that he would love to play with Lebron. Make it happen next season!

Brandon Ingram + Jayson Tatum would have been dope! Jayson Tatum would have been my draft choice. I would have loved to see that dynamic playing on the Lakers. I still think we gave too much for AD, but LeBron + AD >>>> they are a real dominant tandem.

Our biggest draft mistake.

He would have had a chance to play with and learn from Kobe too.

Everyone that is good, within our 4 draft lottery days could have played for the Lakers.

That was a draft with a lot of mistakes.

Wiggens and Jabari Parker went 1 and 2.

Embiid went #3, Jokic #41, Clint Capela #36, Spencer Windiddle #38

Man, he’s even slick with suggesting in playing with AD in the clip.

What makes it a real possibility is that it’s an east coast team and they did the Jimmy deal with Minny, so there’s som precedent there. The only thing is, do they value Markkanen as a keeper and wound they consider moving him to center?

Green/Kuz/S&d’d 2020 1st/2027 1st (converts only if Nawlins defers 2024 1st to 2025 1st, otherwise 2026 1st)/2023 2nd. Kid went to UCLA, right? Speak it into existence.

How different would our present have been if the Celtics drafted Randle and we went with Smart instead?

Jason Tatum 5th in the NBA in Real Plus-Minus behind

Lebron
Giannis
Kawhi
Harden

season
22ppg on FG44 3pt 38%

Last 10
27ppg on FG 48.4 3pt 44.8%

Had Kawhi shooked yesterday on defense and offense. Why you think Kobe loved this guy? He has the complete package. Yes, Davis is better but Davis is better than 99% of NBA players.

Lonzo is a joke still shooting FG40% and 36%

Yes we overpaid for Davis because of all the picks but thats what you do when everything else is aligned. If you can go to the finals 2-3 times is okay to throw the next 4 years after that out the window... we will figure it out then.

Closing lineup next season...

AD, Lebron, LaVine, KCP, Carushow!

Sure, we must have a slot for an overpaid underachiever who is allergic to defense.

What’s he making 20m I’m guessing? Danny Green and Kuzma is making $17? LaVine is not perfect, but he’s athletic, he can handle the ball, he can score inside and outside. Why not?

You just do not invest that kind of money into role players, especially when the player is not even all-star caliber, and, furthermore, that contract effectively takes them out of the Giannis sweepstakes. It’s just a terrible move.
