Come to Klutch Angeles, Trae.

Good find SD, now we need Tatum and Giannis to sign with Klutch and we would be set in Rich Paul finding a 2nd star to pair with AD in the post-LeBron era.

Wonder if Bron will join the front office or flat out buy the Lakers.

He is pretty far down on who can buy the Lakers, I wouldn’t see AEG passing.

It'll probably end up being a conversation about the money, present value, etc... I say that unless the Buss owners become emotional about the team. That said, I doubt it's for sale.

Correction - AEG has first LOOK, not first refusal.

First look (right of first offer) means they get to meet/bid on the team before the Buss' shop the team publicly. If the Buss' don't like the offer (assuming AEG makes one),
they say no and look at other deals.

First refusal can mean a few things:
1) the right to match any offers that are made for the team,
2) the right to buy at a pre-arranged price if the team is put on sale,
3) the right to buy at current market value, based on an agreed appraiser.

AEG has none of those - they have the right to make the first offer. The value in that is they may make an offer that is so attractive that the Lakers just say yes and AEG avoids a bidding war.
Unlikely, with Patrick Soon-Shiong and 500,000 venture capitalists thirsting for a brand like the Lakers, but it does work sometimes.

One minor thing to add, IIRC the Buss Trust owns 66% of the team, and thus controlling interest. But AEG owns 25% of the team, and the stadium they play in. So AEG would be looking at 91% ownership + the stadium. There is a significant difference between that position, and effectively buying into the Buss 66% position.

Essentially, AEG should value the Lakers more than another party, though I suppose they could put their 25% into the pot to cash out too. Basically, their "first look" rights are a way to protect their existing financial position more than a means to control the ownership outcome.

Actually it is, AEG has the right of first refusal. If they say no then others can pursue the franchise. And that is ignoring the hoops that the Buss kids would have to jump through to sell.

I think that Joey and Jesse want their shots at running things. If they can convince another Buss not to sell then there will be no sale.

No they don't.

https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1998-nov-05-sp-39654-story.html#:~:text=Adding%20to%20its%20array%20of,buy%2025%25%20of%20the%20Lakers.

Besides the 25% share of the Lakers, L.A. Arena owns the Kings and Galaxy and, said Leiweke, “the first look at the Lakers, should Dr. Buss ever decided to sell them.”

https://hoopshype.com/tag/philip-anschutz/

"Although Jim and Jeanie Buss say the family is committed to keeping the team, it only requires a “yes” vote by four Buss siblings to force the sale of the Lakers. Philip Anschutz, whose company owns Staples Center and the NHL Kings, and who personally owns 27% of the Lakers, holds the “first look” if the Buss family decides to sell its two-thirds ownership stake. It’s not as strong as a right of first refusal, but it allows Anschutz a chance to buy the team. But if Anschutz passed because the Busses asked for too much, the Chicago investment group Guggenheim Partners, owner of the Dodgers, would eagerly jump into the bidding. The Guggenheim group envisions employing former Lakers star Magic Johnson as the ceremonial face of the franchise, a role he currently holds with the Dodgers."

Old Doc Buss was shrewd. Giving ROFR to Anschutz would depress the market for potential suitors if the Buss' decided to sell. ROFO gives Anschutz an inside track, but more groups would jump in to bid knowing that if they have the best offer, they'll win.

From what I can tell, Anschutz & Roski paid $268 million for 25% of the Lakers in 1998 (equivalent of $423 million today). In hindsight, that was a great deal for them because 25% of the Lakers is probably worth north of a billion.

There is a HUGE difference between Right of First Offer (AKA "first look") and Right of First Refusal. I thought you were a business guy?

The articles I cited from the time it happened say "first look" and quote Tim Leiweke - who likely negotiated the deal - as calling it "first look." My guess is Bresnahan didn't know the difference.

If it is "first refusal," then Dr. Buss didn't get nearly enough of a premium for it. It could likely cost the team hundreds of millions of dollars in negotiating leverage, especially if the $268M AEG paid for their stake in the team also included the price for the Forum.
