Tier 1: Players that could come if we do a good job convincing, but will likely take more than the MLE $$

Clarkson
Dragic
Joe harris
Christian Wood
Marc Gasol
Marcus Morris
Bertans

Tier 2: About MLE-level players

Jeff Teague
Dion Waiters
Mo Harkless
Langston Galloway
Dwight

Tier 3: Players we can overpay to with MLE:

Mason Plumlee
E'Twaun Moore
Jae Crowder
Marco Bellineli
Aron Baynes
Alex Len

Bertans is getting much more than MLE. Same with Baynes. I love Gasol but no way am I committing our best FA tool to a center. We have AD for to play 24-30 mins a night and close at C.

IMO our biggest needs are:

A secondary ball handler/attacking PG in the starting 5
Athletic defensive wings
A microwave scoring guard off the bench
Shooters, shooters shooters

Yea, seems like we pretty much keep it.

so once we draft this years pick, we can trade that 2021 protected pick?

I don't think so. Technically, we traded it and don't get it back until the condition is met (we finish higher than 7th). We cannot determine that until the 2020-2021 season is over.

I'm not a rules expert, though, and their could be a workaround.

So we have, IIRC, for the next years:

2020 - 1st Rounder
2021 - 1st Rounder
2023 - 1st Rounder (with the possibility of being swapped for the Pelicans 1st rounder)
2023 - 2nd Rounder
2024 - 2nd Rounder
2025 - 1st Rounder (with the possibility of the Pelicans choosing this one and giving our 2024 1st Rounder back)
2025 - 2nd Rounder

It's not THAT bad. Lots of room to operate.
And I trust our scouting department 100%. They've been finding a lot of good players in the low picks

We also have a ton of expiring contracts.

Players force their way off of teams all the time, and teams don't always have to break the bank to acquire them.

Why not? You have a chance of closing with him, at C because he's 3 and D (for a 5) and can actually pass.

A secondary ball handler/attacking PG in the starting 5
Athletic defensive wings
A microwave scoring guard off the bench
Shooters, shooters shooters

These theoretical archetypes all cost substantially more than MLE contracts just for average to above average players.

Yeah. Gasol/Dwight/maybe Boogie trio would be solid, and possibly cheap.

I still lean first towards looking for wing defense and creation.

Sure. Just where? 2020 NBA FA list is out. Only thing left is... international? Undrafted FAs?

Bertans is a 4/3.

But he's also $15-20mil.

Mike - in a typical FA year - possibly. 2020 free agents class, most likely, will be struggling to get paid

He's out of our price range, that's my point.

Dude shoots 42%, in a lazy but fast paced team in the Wizards, but on nearly 9 attempts.

Whatever Duncan Robinson is going to make, Bertans is next. Both can't play defense, but in the world of PPP, it may not matter.

Even Joe Harris set the bar, and Robinson and Bertans have more size AND they're more dynamic shooters than Harris as just a spot up guy.

He can't defend 4 or 3 anyway, but as a shooter on O, you can play him both.

That's not what the market is giving out for the MLE, jesus.

Wasn't this just approved? I;m not sure they had this policy at the time he opted out. Remember he has a son with a pre-existing respiratory condition.

I think we should target these guys for the bench who might be flying under the radar

Mbenga - good shotblocker
Medvedenko - stretches the 4 position with his shooting, not afraid to take the shot
George - 3 and D guy, can jump through the roof
Pargo - feisty and pesky defender, can break down defenses with good penetration
Farmar - high IQ ball distributor, championship experience

I disagree on all of those values.

Think JC, Dragic, Teague are $12-$18mil guys

Think Harkless is the only MLE guy.

I only mention Millsap and Gasol because they're in the twilight of their careers and while they don't fill the most pressing needs, intelligent defenders that can space the floor and pass, are certainly needs.

The interest with Harkless and the Lakers seem mutual. With the emergence of Kuzma, the two way wing, will either guy want to take a bench roll?

That's what makes it tough. If Kuzma is "this guy", it wouldn't surprise me if they rolled with a very similar roster regardless of this year's results.

Adding depth is every bit as important. While I like the idea of Harkless a lot, Marc Gasol or Paul Millsap next to AD in closing lineups may be more intriguing.

That's possible, for sure. But it's pretty hard to guess how the market is going to react in these conditions. I see other people fantasizing that all sorts of players will be forced to sign for cheap. That would surprise me. I'm expecting something of a mixed bag.
