The Nash deal is officially behind us. We now have all of our first round picks from here on in until further notice. Huzzah!

We donít have our 2nd round pick next year though. That pick is going to either Sacramento or Atlanta thanks to the Roy Hibbert trade with the Pacers in 2015. Pick has obviously been moved around a bit since then.

To kick things off, Shareef OíNeal, aka Shaqís son, is officially playing for UCLA now. Heís currently rated 32 as a prospect. Like father like son....perhaps?

Unfortunately but also fortunately the 1st rd pick will be gone come draft time. Deng's expiring should be able to be moved for a 1st round pick for some rebuilding team.

Depends on how the season goes I think. Some here said the very same thing this year, even being so sure the pick(s) would be gone. But we kept them, used them and now here we are again.

Iím sort of on the opposite side. I think Deng will more likely be stretched next year or trade him with someone else, without us giving up any picks. This organization has valued picks a lot more for the last few years. Not only we kept our picks, we even traded for another pick this year and gave the player a contract immediately.

I think there's a big difference because it will only be 1 year left in the offseason vs the 2 it was this offseason. A team will know they won't be any good, so they will take on 1 year to get a 1st rounder out of it. Like we did with Lin, or Calderon for 2 2nds. I know we have been doing well with our picks, but would gladly give 1 up to unload Deng and be able to sing Kawhi/Butler/Klay with cap space and not have to eat 3mil or so every year to stretch Deng. I'm sure this conversation has been had a million and 1 times already

with the way Jesse has been leading the charge in our drafting success, I feel good about finding someone wherever on the board we're drafting from

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Joking or not.

If by freak reason the Lakers end up lottery, Jontay Porter. Need to see how De'Andre Hunter comes back next season as well.

If not lottery, well, the draft isn't expected to be anywhere near as deep. The Lakers were lucky last season with 240 guys declaring for the NBA draft. I think that's a record and is about 20% higher than it usually is, which helped add draft depth overall.

Something tells me Bruno Fernando may end up late lottery to mid 1st. Carsen Edwards may slip down end of first due to size. Shareef O'Neal may be on the board late 1st as well.

So some names to track:

Jontay Porter
De'Andre Hunter
Bruno Fernando
Carsen Edwards
Shareef O'Neal
Lindell Wiggington
PJ Washington
Daniel Gafford
Killian Tillie
Jalen McDaniels
Ky Bowman
Shamorie Ponds
Matisse Thybulle
Eric Paschall

A lot can change from today until February too.

Way too early for me to have a clue of any of those college players. I may get a headache just pondering it at this point. Some of you are f'n animals!

I can only go by position at this point. Thinking one year deals will need to be replaced.

So PG or C to replace Rondo and McGee/Zubac? Maybe a long shot to add a SG to replace KCP /Stephenson?

Beyond that i will just watch and learn.

Konate or J. Porter would be my too early favorites for a pick in the 20's, if we have a pick..

But I'm assuming Porter has a good soph. campaign and is lottery bound or at least close to it.

I don't think Jontay will even get out of the lottery, personally.

Not a hot take.

PJ Barrett isn't Tatum level at Duke, yet.

It helps he did get some training from Hanlen this summer though. He's my baseline prospect that lefty shooters aren't the most accurate, but are next level ball-handlers/footwork players.

I don't really trust a lot of these big schools to develop or properly use these guys. Every year we see more and more guys from notable programs have skills nobody knew about that elevate them.

Well, then it also shouldn't be a hot take that it's possible that Barrett may be second to Reddish as the top player at Duke.

But regardless of school, I'm talking about skill set by time of entry into NCAA level. I took heat for saying Tatum was ahead of Ingram by age and if in the same draft, Tatum would be drafted ahead. I'd strongly argue that he's still ahead, even if Ingram is 200 days older with an extra year of NBA experience.

^^^if Reddish can find a motor, I think he would likely surpass Barrett as the top prospect on Duke.....assuming Barrett's shooting is not significantly improved.

I wouldnít be surprised if itís the opposite ó Iíd we give up a talented young player plus Deng for an additional first round pick.

NCAA announces it is implementing several recommendations:

- Players can be repped by agents.
- Agents must be certified by an NCAA program
- Players can be eligible for NBA Draft and return to school if undrafted.

Wow. Interesting.

I assume there are limitations on how many times a player can enter the draft and return? If not, every single player in America would just enter the draft every year.

I think the new NCAA rules will make draft picks more valuable as it will allow some players that come out too early to go back. Teams will get at least another year to evaluate.

Of course, teams will have to do even more work on the highly-rated one and dones because the risk goes up.

Second round picks could really increase in value because the risk/reward gets better on some one and dones that may have been drafted earlier under the old rules.

All that said, I'm not a draft expert so who knows!

I hate most of the new rules....all this effort which will cause issues in college basketball just because the NBA will not change their 1 and done rule.

Not sure where you gathered this tid-bit, but I read that the Lakers traded next years second Round pick + Cash for La Bonga...!

NCAA's new proposed rules blindside execs from NBA, USA Basketball

Quote:
The NCAA launched a commission and set of sub-committees to address the fallout of the FBI investigation into the college basketball industry, resulting in several policy shifts -- including the assigning of responsibility to USA Basketball for something the organization had already told the NCAA it wanted no part: bearing responsibility for selecting elite senior high school prospects who'll be allowed to sign with registered agents.

USA Basketball doesn't have the infrastructure, nor interest in accepting the role of evaluating the nation's top prospects for a yet-to-be-determined number of players who'll annually be allowed to sign with agents at the end of their junior years, sources told ESPN.
