I go with Mike’s list. Usually nails it.

Mike is so overrated.

Better to draft the guys most likely to succeed. This approach didn't really work with Svi and Moe for most of the season.

So much this. 99% of the time, I'm in favor of taking the BPA. Get talent.

I agree always get BPA but I'm all for making a move that could trade out out of our draft position if we are well compensated with picks/players that could potentially be a better fit for the team.
Too many chefs in the kitchen is a definitely a potential issue and if we are serious about making a title run in the Lebron window we really cant afford to burn this lotto pick on a player who really doesnt gel with the core of team.
One example that immediately comes to mind is with the Warriors. There's not a doubt, injury or no injury, that while Cousins in a vacuum is a much better player than Brook Lopez but the Warriors clearly would have been better off signing Brook over Cousins.

It's interesting that the last few drafts, we have gone with talented but physically underdeveloped players.

DLO
BI
Lonzo.

Wonder with this lottery pick, they go for someone who is more ready to play from a physical standpoint. Of course I subscribe to BPA, but not sure how much patience Magic will have with another physically underdeveloped prospect.

it is kind of just the nature of the beast....the most talent/upside usually resides in the younger players....hence less physically developed. Zion is an outlier in that way also.

They were 19. Of course they were physically underdeveloped.

Wagner and Svi, even with their NCAA experience, were underdeveloped too. The lack of Magic's patience Imho, possibly cost him solid rookie productivity because of the skill set approach vs BPA. Svi didn't even stick.

But at the likely 10-12 range we can probably get a more ready to play prospect hopefully?

It's not exactly a super star draft. I don't see how there's too many chefs when the current Lakers draft position projects role players and 3rd option types at best.

Lakers tried this philosophy last year. Mo just now got minutes. Svi was traded off. Can't tell with the value of Bonga yet.

Yes, but upside potential could be sacrificed taking the older player versus taking the 19 year old one and done player.

Examples would be Kuzma and Hart versus Ball who was drafted much higher.

It's a percieved weaker draft. Even in the late 1st, not as likely to draft a Kuzma or Hart.

Josh Hart would have been a mid teens pick in this draft. Maybe higher.

I hate having so many bigs/non-initiators in my top 10, but it looks like that kind of draft year. This will obviously change a bit, but my list is starting to solidify behind Zion.

Could you annotate/markup which could/would

* Be a starter for a 50 win contender

- Theoretically all of them depending on role. Zion's the only surefire high volume initiator/focal point on a future 50-win team, imo. Barrett and Culver could get there, but I think both would be better in Khris Middleton-ish roles on top teams. Morant will be a high usage guy, but I don't know that he ever gets to an efficiency level to lead a 50-win team. Porter, Hunter, Clarke, and Williams lack a mixture of skill and/or scoring mentality to be more than efficient complimentary pieces on offense. Garland and Bol are wildcards - due in no small part to injury limited seasons - but are the kind of pull-up 3pt shooters who could become efficient volume scorers as a super high end outcome (which could offset their obvious defensive deficiencies).

* Be rotation ready on opening day

- Zion and Clarke should be net positive players from day one. The other older guys, Hunter and Williams, could be, as well, though both could need time to adjust on offense to be positives on that end. I'd expect all of the other young guys to be net negative players for the first 2-3 years of their careers.

* A project that might not be rotation ready until later in the season

See above. Young guys generally aren't good as rookies and this freshman class isn't really filled with special, day one talents outside of Zion.

I used those players because of them being on the same team and coming from the same draft.

Everything that I have read agrees with you about the drop off happening sooner and that it will be more pronounced when compared to the 2018 draft.

I think we end up picking at the 5th spot when the draft lottery results takes place in May.

5th? I think the drawing goes up to 4th and then the 5th pick goes to the worst record team remaining.

I've got Nassir roughly around 20.

More like:
Jaxson Hayes
Jontay Porter
Coby White
Nickiel Alexander Walker
PJ Washington

Around the Lakers pick.

Nassir is the kind of guy that makes me want to trade down. Someone will likely take Nassir in the lottery before its all over....dude is going to show out in workouts. While there is a world where things click for Little in the NBA, and he becomes the player many projected him to be a couple years ago....it is probably too risky for me in the lottery.
