Preseason Yawner… The Lakers sat LeBron for the first time this preseason to cut down his minutes. Luke brought back Rondo, shuffled KCP back in the starting lineup and then rolled them out.

Rondo helped orchestrate the offense while the D gave up a few too many points at the rim. The Lakers trailed by 1 at the half.

“I like the way we were sharing the ball,” Luke said of the first half and the team’s 16 assists (Rondo had half).

In the second half, the Lakers coughed up the ball again and again and eventually fell back by double digits. And then the Lakers fell into the penalty not even 2 minutes into the fourth quarter and the game began to die from boredom and garbage time minutes. The Lakers lost 103-87 to the Clippers.

Without LeBron, the offense obviously loses quite a bit of its spark. Without Lonzo, it’s the D (as the stats showed last season). It sounds like we will finally see both on the floor in the next game.

Ingram -- -- Well, when LeBron is on the floor we get more of that Ingram off ball game as the two of them have been developing a little bit of chemistry. We missed that tonight. Not a very dynamic offensive performance. A lot of midrange misses from BI. And while he got to the line a few times, he wasn’t anywhere near as efficient as he was in the last one. I think he wanted a few more trips to the line and picked up a tech as a result later in the game. His two assists in this game were to his fellow bigs after drawing the D. Good job looking for them and making the right play. No steals in this game or spectacular defense on opponent SLOB action. He did have a great track down block in transition. He needs to channel more of that inner AK47 in every game. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-10 shooting (0-1 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He was fouled on a pull-up at the FT line, he made both. He posted up and swished a pumping turnaround. He was stripped on the dribble, recovered on transition D and rejected the layup. He couldn’t finish a drive on the other end. He missed a jumper. He took a high entry pass, drew the D and fed McGee for the dunk. He missed a three straight away. He drew FTs on the perimeter, he made both. He took an inbounds, drew two defenders and found the open Zubac for the dunk. He choked a layup. He attacked baseline and hit Zubac with the bounce pass for FTs. He rattled in a pull-up wing jumper. Tough turnaround wing jumper he probably shouldn’t have taken. He missed a layup in a crowd. Second Half: He missed an elbow pull-up to start the half. Inside-out dribble in transition to go around the D and score a layup. He crossed over and lost the ball. His kickout was picked off (he then picked up a tech).

Rondo -- -- Good to have him back on the floor, especially with LeBron resting. Can’t wait to see the full team out there to see how well we consistently keep the pace and energy up. He led the team with 10 assists, most of those coming in the first half. His only score was from his only attempt from three. He’s been looking good behind the arc so far this preseason (4-5). Good seeing him get on Kuz for some of his offensive stupidness. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 6 boards, 10 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Long outlet over the D to KCP for the breakaway score. Poor angle on the post entry, turnover. Off the mark on a lob attempt. He flipped a pass behind him to Kuzma for the three. He hit KCP slipping the screen for the layup. Second Half: He deflected a pass on one end, then lobbed to Kuzma on the break on the other. He fumbled a defensive board away. He missed a floater in the lane. He sank a wing three when the D switched and sagged off. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He missed a drive but Zubac cleaned it up.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- There was a point in this game where KCP was rebounding at the PF spot in an uber-small guard lineup Luke ran. I really think the team should just get the basics down first. Have guys play in their comfort zones and usual positions. Get comfortable as a squad, then do the mad scientist stuff after the fact. KCP was clanking from three, but everything else he was scoring on. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-6 shooting (0-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He leaked out and scored layup on the long outlet from Rondo. He curled into the lane, took the pass and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. Off-balance chuck from the sideline and he missed. He up-faked, attacked, got into the defender and scored a layup. He slipped a screen, took the pass and scored the lefty layup. He missed a wing three. He was fouled at the PF spot on the FT line (come on, Luke…too small), he made both. Second Half: He traveled cutting weak to strong to take a pass and not being decisive on the finish. He clanked a wing three. He was fouled on a pull-up wing jumper, he made both FTs. He couldn’t handle a sweet behind-the-back bounce pass from Rondo, fumbling it out of bounds.

McGee -- -- They were trying to find him again and again on the lobs and were not connecting with much frequency. He might have had a couple of his turnovers off those after trying to recover, but he did through some sketchy passes. I get a little nervous when I see the guards dump the ball to him on the perimeter. His best play of the night, however, was attacking the pressure D by Gortat on the perimeter for a monster dunk over him. Pretty good screen setting again, as well. Defensively, some nice challenges at times, but the Clippers were able to score at the rim a little too easily on us. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-9 shooting to go with 9 boards, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -13. The Action: He missed the short runner off the two-man game. He couldn’t finish a lob, got it back and threw it away. He dunked off the lob from KCP. He dunked off the interior feed from Ingram. Late read and his perimeter pass was picked off. He flipped in a tough hook over a double team. He blew a lob dunk he should have had. Horrible kickout trying to get it back to Rondo, layup the other way. Second Half: He didn’t hit rim on an elbow jumper. Good challenge on the other end to force a miss. He blocked a shot. He took a pass at the top of the arc, surveyed the floor on a pivot, then attacked the overplaying D to his right at high speed and hammered over Gortat. He couldn’t finish a tough lob, but hustled after the ball to regain possession. Another lob attempt that was disrupted and we lost the ball trying to recover.

Kuzma -- -- At the end of the first half, he got yanked by Luke for breaking off a play call to clank an iso three attempt (Rondo got on him, too, on court). He finished the half with 11 points on 4-8 shooting, but Luke and Rondo didn’t like the selfishness there. The mental side of his offensive game has been a little lacking so far this preseason. His shot selection has left a lot to be desired as it just seems like he’s trying to do too much and ending up with shots that are a higher degree of difficulty than necessary. The Stats: He scored 15 points on 6-13 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-3 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a pull-up three. He cut, gathered a pass, spun and scored a layup. He came off a screen, took the pass and hit the wing three. He missed a wing three. He was fouled on a cut, he made one FT. He missed a pull-up at the FT line. He sank a three. He clanked a short bank, he should have had. He attacked the mismatch, blew past Gortat and scored the And-1 lefty layup, he missed the FT. He blew off a play and traveled on an iso three attempt (Rondo got on him). Second Half: He finished the lob from Rondo on the break. He posted up and hit the hook across the lane. He missed a three on a kickout. He missed a tough baseline fade. He missed an off-balance force in the lane on iso.

Hart -- -- Defensively, I’ve always felt he’s showed a lot of promise on that end and I enjoy seeing him get stops. He had a few moments against Lou defensively tonight, especially when he kept him from going left. But the feeling I’ve had in just about every game since the beginning of summer league is that Hart is not as good on D as he thinks he is. Meaning, he needs to be a little more desperate and hungry about getting better on that end. Was it Wooden that said it’s what we know after we learn it all that’s important? I think Josh could use a little more of that kind of approach on D. Not quite the impact of the last game, but his ability to attack the rim and get to the line has been pretty consistently there all preseason. That’s going to be a tremendous weapon all season. Hope he can stay in the starting lineup. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He cut from the weakside corner, took the feed and reverse jammed. He was blocked on a runner at the buzzer. Nice recovery to Lou to bother a shot. He drew a charge on Lou anticipating him going left. He missed a long wing jumper. He gave up a layup on a switch. He gave up FTs trying to defend a drive on a switch. He dunked on the breakaway off the Lance steal and pass. He attacked off the three line strong to his left and was fouled, he made one. Second Half: He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball, slammed on the brakes in transition and buckled his knees a little as he got fouled, he made one FT. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break. He rattled in a floater off the two-man game. He drew an offensive foul fighting over a screen. He missed a three.

Beasley -- -- In the stat line, the 2 blocks and 3 assists should stick out. Some really nice rotations on D to challenge players at the rim at get stops. He obviously looks more comfortable at the PF spot and the second unit has been looking better as they get used to each other (and perhaps a little less time without traditional bigs on the floor). I don’t know that we’ve got the right guys on the roster for a small ball lineup, but that type of rim protection is good to see. Offensively, some nice reads to guys like Hart cutting in the half court or Zubac trailing the break for a score. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 4 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He rejected a shot at the rim. He up-faked from the corner, attacked baseline and drew FTs on a throwdown attempt, he made one. He missed a wing fade. He spotted Hart cutting from the weakside for the throwdown. A couple great passes in a row, first to Hart cutting weak-to-strong on the baseline for the dunk, then to Zubac trailing the break for another score. He missed a two-for-one attempt from deep three. He sank a short turnaround in the paint and took a shot in the process, he made the FT. He missed a 14-footer in the paint. Low position on a small man and he scored the easy layup. Second Half: Great help recovery at the rim to reject a finish attempt. He attacked off the three line, drew contact and hit the short runner, he missed the FT. He missed a short pull-up.

Zubac -- He said he was sick for the first 7-10 days of training camp. He’s also lost 20 pounds and is learning how to play like that. He’s been looking better defending the rim in the past couple of games as he’s moving and anticipating quicker. You make faster/better reads, you look quicker. Offensively, the jumper and freethrows look very flat with little margin for error. He had some aggressive moves around the rim when in the paint. The team looks better with traditional bigs on the floor right now. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 4-9 shooting (0-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +3. The Action: He missed a lefty bank off a spin on the two-man game. He was called for a travel. Nice challenge to force a brick on a drive and that led to a Zubac layup on the break on the other end. He missed a tip-in attempt. He cut to the hoop and dunked when Ingram found him. Another good challenge on a jumper to force a miss. He got tapped on an aggressive move in the post for a jumphook. On the other end, he blocked Lou’s floater to ignite a break. He was fouled on the drive and dish from BI, he missed both FTs. Second Half: He crashed the glass and cleaned up Rondo’s dribble penetration miss. He missed the wing jumper. He gave up baseline and an And-1 layup (probably should have stepped back a bit when his man faced up). He was stripped/fouled on a layup attempt. Good effort to tip in a miss from behind a man. He denied a couple layup attempts.

Stephenson -- -- He was closing in on a double-double. Some good stretches in this game where the ball didn’t completely die in his hands. Well, at least some improvement in that regard. It was largely a midrange or get to rim on iso type of game. He did have a toe on the three on one of his makes. But his work is usually on pounding the dribble and attacking off the screens. At some point, we want quicker decisions when the ball gets to him. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-10 shooting (0-2 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He missed a drive, got it back, missed again on iso. He attacked off the screen and scooped in a layup (help D concerned about McGee, so they didn’t help). He iso’d and missed a jumper. He swiped the ball and hit Hart on the break for the dunk. He charged on the pass off on the break. He iso’d and was stripped for an And-1 the other way. Harrell attacked him full court for FTs on a layup attempt with 0.6 left in the half. He missed a 75-foot heave at the buzzer. Second Half: He swished a long wing two in transition. He missed a wing three behind a screen. He swished a pull-up wing jumper. He bricked a 16-footer badly. He attacked from the wing and scored the hanging And-1 layup, he made the FT.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Not much to report in this one. He showed a little of that more well-rounded game with a nice drive and kick and another scooping layup under Boban. The Stats: He scored 2 point on 1-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 turnover in 10 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He attacked and kicked to Williams for a jumper. He missed a corner three. He attacked off the three line and scooped in a layup under Boban. He dribbled a ball off his foot, turnover.

Caruso -- -- His D has been pretty disruptive this preseason. Nothing going offensively. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 steals and no fouls in 8 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Great job dropping to the corner to deny a baseline kickout with a steal, then outlet to Hart leaking out. He missed a wing pull-up jumper. He forced up and missed a wing three. He couldn’t finish a drive.

Williams -- -- That three ball generally looks atrocious when he shoots it. He had to deal with Boban defensively when he came in and we lost that battle (11 points and 6 boards for Marjanovic in his 7 minutes). Williams didn’t have a board. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-7 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 7 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He tried to score in the post over Boban and was rejected. He blocked a drive on the other end. He swished a baseline jumper on a kickout. He missed a short jumphook. He missed a floater in the lane. He got a kind bounce on a 17-footer and it fell in. He threw a pass away. Awful brick from three straight away. He scored a layup off the Bonga highlight reel pass.

Wear -- -- More often than not, he seems to be in the right place on his defensive rotations. Quietly disruptive in that regard. No offensive highlights in this one, but he did block Boban from behind. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 block and no fouls in 2 minutes (doesn’t seem right). He was a +1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a wide open three. He missed a turnaround. He blocked Boban from behind.

Berry II -- -- Garbage time run and nothing notable. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting and had 1 assist in 5 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a jumper trying to beat the shotclock.

Carroll -- -- Brief garbage time run with nothing to report. The Stats: He had 1 foul in 5 minutes and was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Bonga -- Slowly, YouTubers are going to be able to build a Bonga highlight reel that makes him looks impressive. He had a nice assist after going behind his back after picking up the dribble tonight. Should be interesting watching his growth in the G-League this year. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He was called for an illegal screen. Great move to spin away from the pressure, but he couldn’t finish the layup. He picked up the dribble, went around his back and dished it off to a trailer for a score.

Walton -- -- Really wish we could move on from the screwy lineups and mad scientist stuff right now and just get the guys that are going to play together more time on the court… A couple early timeouts. The Lakers trailed by 6 off an 8-0 run. Just not getting any stops at the rim… He brought in Hart for Ingram and Beasley for McGee… Stephenson in for Rondo, Lakers down 2 with under 4 minutes left… Zubac in for Kuzma. Lakers down 5… Ingram back in for KCP… The Lakers trailed 28-25 after the first quarter… McGee in for Zubac, who had a good run… McGee, Kuzma, Hart, KCP, Rondo all in down 1. That unit forced a timeout with a small lead… Stephenson in for McGee, tie score… Svi in for Kuzma, who Luke was ticked at for breaking off a play… The Lakers trailed 51-50 at the half. They had 16 assists in the half… Turnovers piling up for the Lakers to start the quarter… Beasley in for Kuzma... Stephenson in for KCP… Zubac in for McGee, Lakers down 10 with 2:30 left… Caruso in for Rondo… The Lakers trailed 76-70 heading into the fourth… He started the Zubac, Beasley, Hart, Stephenson, Caruso lineup… This lineup was looking a bit flat offensively… Lakers in the penalty in under 2 minutes… Williams in for Zubac and he had to cover Boban… Beasley out for Wear… Deep bench in down 12… Really hope we’re done with the G-League minutes for the rest of the preseason…

Thanks DB.

It’s looking more and more like the team will need Ingram and Lonzo to be great defensive players or else we might be in some trouble.

It’s going to be challenging to outscore opponents shooting like they have and relying on transition points.

Clippers played up on the Lakers much of the night. Without roster continuity and two of their three initiators, it worked. Doc also exploited their lack of size. Going to have to fix that.

Very unwatchable game. Too many whistles, too many turnovers, too many shots clanking, and too much matador defense tonight! Ugly!

Thanks DB. I do feel Luke needs to get the lineups down because you want to enter the season with some positive momentum... obviously every team is playing their bench a bunch of minutes at this stage. Just looking at the stats we shot 16.7% from 3; that's never going to help..

Yes! Yes! and more Yes! Defense is what's going to determine this team's performance. We will be embarrassed by a juggernaut like the upcoming Warriors if we don't step up on that end.

"I really think the team should just get the basics down first. Have guys play in their comfort zones and usual positions

I have to agree with that assessment DB. If they get comfortable doing what they already do well, and as a result build chemistry much quicker, they perform better as a unit.

But to drastically play with their games to start off is asking for struggles, some of which might be wholly unnecessary.

Thanks for the synopsis DB.

DB. Thank You. I missed this game due to work being insane, but I felt like you filled me in where the YouTube highlights couldn’t.
