For me they are ok. But as the ceremony lingers on I feel depressed, anger, hatred, bitterness and overall a sense of self loathing. But than I take a shot at the open bar and I am happy again

I generally don't want to go
Once I get there, I am happy that I went
And when I leave, I'm happy it was not my wedding

Small intimate affair for a close friend or relative?

I'm in.

Big fancy "look at me" event?

Pass.

How do people attend to afford weddings that are out of state? It seems like the cost of airfare and hotel rooms would really almost be as much as on an actual vacation, right?

Is there ever a scenario where the wedding couple offers to pay for their guests ' travel costs?

Weddings are different depending on the culture and socioeconomic status of the people involved.

I've been to religious weddings, formal weddings and backyard weddings.

I cringe at formal weddings where I have to sit and listen to speech after speech. I much rather prefer casual weddings where I can hang out in the back, beer in my hand, and have small talk about sports or whatever with people that are good company.

As most people I usually just go for the food and to catch up with friends and family. I think it's absurd how much people spend on their wedding, when I as a guest, usually don't remember a thing other than the conversations I had with friends and family. Yet, they're left 20k in debt.

Totally agree. I also hate dressing up so casual weddings are preferred by me.

Btw, I thought the average cost of a wedding in CA is around $35K. So insane.

Being an introvert, I hate the following things:

1. Being surrounded by large groups of people.
2. Being around people who I am not familiar with.
3. Being surrounded by large groups of people who I'm not familiar with.
4. Making small talk with people.
5. Making small talk with people who I'm not familiar with.

Additionally, I hate:

6. Dressing up in anything fancier than business casual (which for me is jeans and a polo shirt).

Add those things all up and weddings are essentially my personal hell.

I’m conflicted. On the one hand weddings can be great parties. OTOH, is the fact that two people want to contractually cohabitate really worth someone shelling out 40k for a decent party and a bunch of people spending tens of thousands fulfilling their shopping wish list?

Dude. It's a wedding. It's a happy expression of love where you eat and drink for free. Try and have a nice time.

Weddings are alright. Having a good time, a few drinks and possibly getting lucky, all on someone else's dime? Nothing wrong with that. Although I only attend the ones from close friends or relatives. If it's some distant relative or family friend I have no connection with, then that's a hard skip. I also appreciate anyone who can throw a good party.

People being happy is nice. Open bar is fun. Only problem is when it's the wedding of a relative I don't care about and I have something else to do that weekend.

Sure. But we weren’t talking about what to do at a wedding, we were asked about them conceptually.

Line dancing is vulgar no matter the occasion

Depends a lot on how good the food is. If the cake is great then it’s not so bad.
