The Defense Arrives… Back in the day, smoke hung from the rafters from fans lighting up cigarettes. You’d see it at the Forum and other arenas if you attended, and maybe get an occasional glimpse of it in old photographs of classic NBA games. Tonight, it was the Camp Fire that billowed into the arena in Sacramento and hung thick in the air. Both teams took to the floor despite it and we had just another NBA game.

Going into this, you expected a high-octane attack between two of the fastest teams in the league. The Lakers, however, stalled out the Kings pace, walled off the break, forced the Kings into halfcourt sets, then clamped down for the 101-86 road win.

“To hold them to eighty points is really impressive,” Luke said of the effort. He praised the bench for their work in the second half to take control of the game.

For the second game in a row, Tyson Chandler has left his imprint on the floor with hustle plays, stifling defense and control of the boards.

“We got a great one-two punch at our center position,” LeBron said afterward. What was once a position of weakness, now looks to be somewhat of a strength. The defense also benefits from continuity in how they defend as both bigs play drop coverage. It seems that they are more and more on the same page, and with that, they are finding a rhythm. The result?

The defense has finally arrived for the first time this season.

LeBron -- -- In the first half, he had 15 points on 6-9 shooting, sinking a couple of deep threes. He settled a bit for long jumpers and fades quite a bit, kind of pacing himself. On defense he can be engaged on ball and will help off it. But, man, there are some plays where he just stops moving. I mean completely, lol. So definitely the King of pacing himself tonight. He had some very timely scores, however, that I think really helped us absorb the pushes Sacramento tried to make. He did play into the Kings hands a couple of times with some poor decisions for turnovers, but he was a steady force that Sacramento just lacked. Nice to be able to play him short minutes to rest for the next one. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 10-18 shooting (3-6 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He cut baseline and Ingram found him for the layup. Bad decision on a halfcourt feed trying to hit Lonzo fronted, ball stolen, score the other way (kind of possessions we don’t want in this game). He muscled in a baseline layup in early offense. He got a big switched on him and sank the step-back three from the wing. Not close on a deeper wing three on iso. He missed a short one in the paint off an inbounds. He attacked, bullied a big and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. Behind-the-back pass out of bounds, uggh. He deflected pass to save a dunk. He missed a layup, got it back and scored the putback. He sank a deep three behind a screen. Second Half: He missed a three. He dunked off the halfcourt transition lob from Lonzo. He got a big to switch on him and sank the step-back wing three. He missed another deep step-back three. He missed a long hook on the break (like one on four), not a good look, pull that out. He airballed a step-back midrange jumper on a busted play. He missed a fading wing jumper out of a timeout, not a good look. He drew FTs on the secondary break, he made just one. He found Kuzma off the cut for the dunk. He scored a layup in transition next time down. He toyed with Jackson on the dribble, spun then scored the layup.

Ball -- -- He said he rolled the ankle a little early in the game after his twist yesterday. He still moved pretty good out there and, of course, those fast hands can sometimes help on D even if he’s not a hundred percent. Fox had 17 points in the first half. This was mostly feasting off switches against Kuzma (felt like maybe 10-12 points just on that). They reduced some of that in the second half and Kuzma was a little more game defensively. Offensively, he killed his three percentage in this game going 0-6. There was a stretch in the first half where he airballed a layup, a midrange jumper and a three all in a row. The airball trifecta. Yikes. That may have limited his minutes some, but the Lakers didn’t want to run him a lot with that ankle if they could help it. Some excellent passes: a lob to LeBron from midcourt for a dunk, a quick-fire feed to McGee under the hoop and more importantly, a play where he aggressively attacked off the dribble, got deep into the paint, didn’t pass early before the D commit to him and then fed McGee for a dunk. As mentioned multiple times, he hasn’t been drawing defenders to him enough early on this season. On that play, he finally did. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-6 from three) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He missed a sideline jumper to start the game. He swished a pull-up going to his left at the top of the key. He attacked the rim hard and fed McGee for the dunk (finally drawing the D and then passing…has been passing much too early all season). Way short on a wing three. He missed another wing three. He somehow airballed a layup on a drive. Great feed while in the air on the catch at the three line to McGee under the hoop for a dunk. He airballed an elbow pull-up. He airballed a wide open corner three next time down. He scored a layup on the break. Finally didn’t switch on Fox and forced him into an airball at the buzzer. Second Half: He missed a wide open three. He missed a deep three to beat the shotclock. He fired a halfcourt to lob to LeBron over a defender for the throwdown.

Ingram -- -- Let’s get to the good first. He pulled down 8 boards in this game. Huge numbers for him and something that should always be there for him if he just applies himself more on the glass. Love that. Love the passing in the last game. Adding more of those things to his game elevates his impact to another level. He was also pretty good at times walling off the D in transition. He got back and was helping slow the Kings attack. Shooting-wise? Uggh, he had the midrange, non-game going early in this one. He had 6 points on 3-9 shooting in the first half. He said he was disappointed because he wasn’t knocking down shots he thinks he can make…but those aren’t good, efficient looks and he doesn’t knock them down at a high rate. He did have a few around the rim that didn’t fall and missed both threes, so maybe he was thinking more about those. But 12 points on 17 shots is a bit painful. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-17 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 boards (2 offensive), 2 assists and 4 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He zipped a pass to LBJ cutting. He sealed a man attacking baseline and scored a layup. He attacked from the wing off the screen and scored a layup. He posted up Hield and forced a foul. He forced a midrange jumper with a man on and missed. He couldn’t finish a layup on the break. He missed a wing three. He sank a pull-up 16-footer. He missed a long iso jumper. Good jumper to force a miss on a recovery on the perimeter. He missed a forced turnaround in the post after pounding the dribble. He missed a pull-up midrange shot in transition, again poor look. Second Half: He kicked out to Kuzma on the break for a three. He missed an open corner three. He missed a layup and putback tip attempt (might have tweaked an ankle or foot, came out of the game). He left too soon before the screen was set, turnover on Chandler. He grabbed a board and was stripped out of bounds trying to finish on the other end. He faced up from the midpost, attacked to his right and was fouled at the rim, he made both FTs. He missed a fade in the post instead of trying to power up. He iso’d at the end of the quarter, got his man backing up and then hit the midrange at the end of the third. He attacked off the high screen and muscled in a layup over the help.

Kuzma -- -- Fox’s eyes got big anytime Kuzma switched on him in the first half. It seemed like instant points. A lot of unnecessary switching on that which is disappointing. A little more effort there could have prevented some of that, but they were definitely hunting Kuzma on D. Just 2 points on 1-5 shooting in the first half. His only bucket on a steal jumping into the passing lane. He’d score 9 points in the second half. A couple of nice passes to McGee after drawing the D. Love seeing that from our PF spot. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-13 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 3 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 31 minutes. He was a +0. The Action: He missed a wing three. He attacked and missed a layup. He drew the D and fed McGee for the dunk. He missed a wing three. He jumped a passing lane and took it for a dunk. He iso’d and missed a jumphook. He gave the ball back to Lonzo on the break for a layup. Second Half: He swished a three on the kickout in transition. He missed a three. He tried to leave before he caught the ball, turnover, points the other way. He attacked, spun and missed in the lane. He attacked and lobbed to Chandler. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed a corner three. He dropped back to strip a man, then dunked on the subsequent breakaway. Give and go with LeBron and he dunked off the Rondo screen (they’ve run this UCLA cut a couple of other times and it usually results in good things…they saved it for a good moment).

McGee -- -- Smoke in the arena from the Camp Fire tonight might impact JaVale more than others. LeBron said he had a headache, JaVale said he thought a stomach ache he had was from it. He had 10 points on 5-6 shooting all in the first half. No scoring in the second half. He and Tyson where in that revolving door sub pattern that Luke has implemented for them. Short stints and relentless effort from them. The locked down the paint tonight and made life tough on the Sac bigmen. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-6 shooting to go with 8 boards (3 offensive), 1 steal, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He got the Lakers a new possession battling on the glass. He missed a lob he probably should have gathered and brought down. Another regained possession battling on the offensive glass. He rejected WCS’s drive attempt. He dunked off the two-man game with McGee. He dunked off the draw and dish from Kuzma. He grabbed an offensive board, looked to kickout, then dunked. Travel trying to create on iso. He tapped in a lob pass from Lance. He dunked off the quick-fire Lonzo feed. Second Half: Offensive board and he reset the offense, then was called for three seconds. He rejected a shot to ignite a break. Good challenge to prevent a score.

Hart -- -- Strong game from Josh (maybe one of his best defensive games). Shot selection left a bit to be desired. A lot of off-balance threes and none of those fell. These are shots he didn’t need to take, either. I know he’s feeling confident but you don’t hit those shots at a high percentage. When he got good, open looks, he was deadly. Defensively, we had the Bagley versus Hart at the backup PF battle in the first half that was worth watching. Bagley thought he had an advantage and Josh held his own, helping force turnovers. Sequence went like this: miss in the post, a double dribble, a steal that he turned into a layup). I just love seeing teams stall out their offense thinking they should take advantage of this matchup. In the second half, when he was at the PF he had a help D rotation that he didn’t get a block for but smothered a drive. That’s the kind of scenario you expect to lose on with the small ball, but he’s feisty in the paint. The perimeter D was much stronger, as well. Good job sticking to the guards and recovering to his man (one foul on a three shooter, but much stronger). The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: Extra pass to the corner for a KCP three. He stripped a man to ignite a break. He missed a running bank. He stole the ball in the post and took a pass on the other end to finish the break. He missed a tough three in transition after helping to cause another turnover on D. He missed a forced wing three. He sank an open three trailing the break (that more like the looks he needs to be taking). Second Half: He fouled a three shooter. Great help D rotation to block a shot. He missed a wing three in transition (not quite balanced on that sequence). He drained a wide open wing three on a kickout. Bad off balance three in transition, he airballed by about three feet (come on, Josh), points the other way. His man sagged off and he knocked down the three.

Rondo -- -- He had the team-high +/- tonight as the second unit really locked in and rolled during some stretches. He didn’t shoot very well, but he did organize that unit and call the sets. This was one of the few times that he had Stephenson looking reasonably effective on the floor while they were both out there. (It helps that Lance hits some threes, but nice to see that clicking). What looked a bit clunky still was some of the minutes when both he and the starters were on the floor. A lot of times on the floor, he’s calling plays that have others initiate the offense. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-9 shooting (1-3 form three, 1-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +17. The Action: He missed a three on iso. He missed a pull-up midrange jumper. Called for an illegal screen, weak call. Second Half: He drew an illegal screen fighting over the top on D. He drilled a wide open wing three. He missed a wing three just beating the shotclock. He banked in a runner on the two-for-one working off a screen. Bad pass, but he got it back and found Lance in the corner for three. He attacked and threw up a prayer trying to draw the foul, then he picked up a tech. He hit Stephenson for the corner three. He swiped a ball in transition and hit KCP for the layup. He threw a bad skip pass. He attacked and missed a layup, but Tyson drew FTs on that penetration. He was called for a delay of game for shooting after a whistle (didn’t look like there were any refs around to take the ball seemed like), he went to the line for his own FTs, he missed both badly. He was rejected, score the other way. He found LeBron on the secondary break for FTs. He was shoved on a screen for FTs, he made one.

Chandler -- -- Defensively, he said the key for the Lakers was getting back in transition and walling off Fox to keep the Kings in the halfcourt instead of building up confidence by getting out on the break, scoring and hitting threes. The stat line isn’t as reflective of how much of a pest he was on the offensive boards … even as impressive as his numbers were. He had 5 offensive boards, but he was challenging boards and forcing the Kings to lose control and the Lakers to regain possession just with the pressure. That happened several times. So many good plays on D in this one. The highlight was probably diving out of bounds to save a loose ball to a teammate. Inspiring when you see your aging 7-footer doing that. He did a great job smothering WCS on iso again and again. Some good help D challenges, as well. Overall, though, the 12 boards is just a huge number in 23 minutes. We’re giving up less second chances and we’re getting more ourselves (he and McGee combined for 8 offensive boards). Getting those extra possessions is making a massive difference. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-2 shooting (1-4 from the line) to go with 12 boards (5 offensive), 1 steal, 1 block, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a +7. The Action: He tapped out a rebound. He saved a hoop on a strip recovery under hoop. Offensive foul setting a screen. He forced WCS into a travel smothering him. He was called for three seconds. He drew a charge on WCS moving his feet well and going down. He forced WCS into a travel, smothering him again. Another battle on the offensive glass to keep possession alive. Second Half: He scored on the lob. Another good challenge on a drive on a switch to get a stop. Offensive board led to a three. He couldn’t finish in a crowd, got it back and was hacked badly, he made one FT. He dove out of bounds to save a defensive stop. He drew FTs on the putback attempt off Rondo’s missed drive, he missed both. Great challenge bouncing off his man at the last second to prevent a layup.

Stephenson -- -- He sank both his threes in the second half, big plays when the Lakers bench was imposing its will and taking control of this game. Big shots, but I love the big boards tonight, too. Some good help on the defensive glass to shut the Kings down. He seemed engaged on the defensive end and that helped earn him the minutes. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-3 shooting (2-2 from three) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 14 minutes. He was a +12. The Action: He lobbed to McGee for the score. Wild pass on the break, not even close, he stole it back though on the other end. He iso’d on a big and hit the jumper from the top of the key. He attacked and threw it away for a dunk the other way. Second Half: He sank a sideline three off a broken play. Good job on the glass to get the board, start the break, then get the offensive board off a Hart miss, then on a kickout he swished a corner three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He got some shots up tonight, which has been rare. Some bad ones at times, but he did sink a couple of threes and also get out on the break. Hitting a couple of threes in the first half got him more minutes as the game went along. My favorite play might have been working the two-man game and hitting an open Hart for the wing three. He just looked more comfortable in his own skin out there tonight than usual and that was a sign of that. Rondo called that set play. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and 1 foul in 18 minutes. He was a +14 The Action: He sank a corner three on a swing pass. He missed a good look at a wing three. He attacked and lost the ball. He swished a high arching three from the wing. He missed a corner three short. Second Half: He missed a three off a handoff. He scored a layup on the break. Wow, awful three, not close in transition, was a complete brick off glass. He attacked from the corner off the three line next time down and threw it up to earn FTs, he made one. He bricked a wide open three. He scored a layup in transition a few seconds later. He worked the two-man game and whipped it to Hart for the wing three.

Zubac -- -- He went 0-2 on a single play, missing a couple of easy ones. Poor Zu, but at least he’s getting third-string minutes now instead of second-string. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting and had 2 boards in 2 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed the short one, got the rebound back from behind his man, then choked the layup again, uggh.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Hey, Sasha, at least made his freethrows. I kid, but poor Svi’s shooting hasn’t translated from practice yet. He missed both FTs off the bench tonight. Good to see a little garbage time. Want to see more of it in our favor! The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from the line to go with 1 foul in 2 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He attacked and drew FTs on the trip, he missed both, ouch.

Walton -- -- The Lakers led 12-7 forcing a timeout after some scores at the rim… Chandler in off of that timeout after just 4 minutes… Lakers up 9 when Rondo came in for Lonzo… KCP, Hart and McGee in for Chandler, Kuzma and LeBron… Ingram now on Bagley… Lance in for Ingram, really small lineup with McGee, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo… The Lakers led 26-20 after the first quarter… Up 8 McGee out for Chandler after a minute and a half… After a KCP three, the Lakers pulled out to an 11-point lead and forced a timeout… Up 13 with 7:24, LBJ back in for KCP… Kuzma and Lonzo in… A couple bad turnovers and the Kings turned them into scores to cut the lead down to 12. Timeout… All starters back in with Chandler instead of McGee… McGee in for Chandler. Lakers up 9… KCP in for Ingram who tweaked a foot… Chandler in for McGee up 3… Rondo now in for Lonzo and Ingram back in for KCP, Lakers up 5… Tempo is intense but the Lakers pull out to a 10-point lead… LeBron out for Hart… McGee, Kuzma, Ingram, Hart, Rondo to close the quarter… The Lakers led 76-65 heading into the fourth… He started a McGee, Hart, KCP, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… Stephenson forced a timeout with a corner three… They led by 15 after a couple minutes… Good timeout after a wild Hart three in transition that resulted in points the other way. The Lakers were up big but wanted to keep momentum from developing. He brought back in Kuzma, LeBron and BI up 18 but left in Rondo… Another King three and the lead is down 12. Lakers losing rhythm with this lineup that doesn’t really play together… With 1:39 left and up 16, Luke brought in the bench to close… “It’s just progress…but we know it’s never going to be a straight line where we’re going,” Luke said…

We got 11 points and 22 boards plus a few blocks and great overall defensive impact from our centers tonight. It's impressive how much production we're getting from a couple guys on the books with veteran minimum deals. Assuming we aren't gifted AD next summer, I hope there's a way for us to bring them both back.

This game gives me hope. We absolutely sucked on offense tonight yet we still managed to win the game. Haven't see this team play so badly and win in a long time. All because of the addition of Chandler. He really helps us in the paint, it's huge. Now I am beginning to think, barring major injuries, this squad can win 50 games. I am starting to think they are a top 5 western seed.

Good D, finally. The O left a lot to be desired, especially from some of the starters. Go Lakers!

Thanks DB! travelling and missed the game. I really like what I'm reading about the defense in this game. Getting Tyson Chandler changes everything, it appears.

We went from thin to win at the 5 in a just a few days. I've been watching McGee since his GS days, and I knew instantly that we were extremely fortunate to get him. I was hoping the FO would have had a team option for a second year, or convinced him to take a two year deal.

Tyson balances our entire roster. Luke doesn't have to do any excessive lineup experiments anymore. Everyone can stay in their lane. It enables Kuz to be a dynamite 3 & 4 with BI & James. Our backcourt is set. Now, our frontcourt is too.

Thanks DB. What a satisfying win vs an up and coming team with a lot of good young talent. A few random stats and where we rank league wide:

Points in the paint: 59.7ppg (1st). With 3 elite passers on the roster, this is sustainable. Source

Fast break points: 22.9ppg (1st). We have some interchangable athletes that can grab the rebound and go. Source

Defensive rebounds per game: 35.3rpg (12th). Last 3 games we averaged 36.3rpg (7th). Tyson factor? Last night we had 42 def rebounds - which would have ranked 1st if this effort could be maintained. No rebounds no rings. Source

Offensive rebounds per game: 10.5rpg (16th). Tyson factor? Last night we had 17 - which would have ranked us 1st if this effort could be maintained. Source

Assists per game: 25.9apg (5th). We assist more at home (28apg - which would be 2nd behind the Dubs). Source

Luke is splitting the center position just about 50/50 between JaVele and Tyson. It's paying dividends so far. Defense and rebounding has lead the way to vast improvements in our overall play these last few games. We got a lot of areas to build upon. The schedule is pretty favorable these next few games. We need to take advantage.

Thanks DB. What a satisfying win vs an up and coming team with a lot of good young talent. A few random stats and where we rank league wide:
