My late cousin's widow and their two sons live out in Westlake Village (the oldest is a sophomore at Pepperdine), and my aunt used to live in Thousand Oaks. Damn. Too close to home.

Not official but from what I hear from the news reports, there is a dead body at the front which is probably the bouncer.

An officer just said that the number of people shot has been changed to 11 people, including a deputy. He did not confirm the extent of their injuries. Said the situation is contained to the club but that it has not been resolved. Said there were hundreds of people inside at the time that it happened.

Shooter is in the building, doesn't say whether they are dead or alive. Body language of the officers didn't look urgent so my guess is that person has been neutralized.

I just saw a college student being interviewed (who was not in the bar at the time) who said that the place was filled with mainly 18-21 year old kids on this night, a college night with a country-western dance theme.

Shooter is confirmed dead. Apparently the situation lasted several minutes with shots being fired.

Thirteen confirmed dead, including the shooter and Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran of the department who was going to be able to retire in a year or two. What a tragedy this all is.

Sickening. I was in Thousand Oaks yesterday afternoon for work and was contemplating stopping off for a beer afterwards. That’s scary

Have a friend that goes to that bar regularly. He was planning on going last night and fell asleep after work so didn't end up going. The crazy part is that he was also at that Vegas concert a year or so ago that had the mass shooting.

Weapon used was a Glock 21, a standard issue pistol used by law enforcement.

I don't know if your friend is cursed or blessed, or both

Gunman was a veteran, former US Marine

Quote:
Ian David Long, 28, is believed to have been the gunman in Wednesday night's shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said.

Authorities found the gunman dead inside an office adjacent to the bar's entryway, Dean said. "We believe he shot himself."

The gunman used a Glock 21 .45-caliber handgun designed to hold 10 rounds plus one in the chamber, but the gun had an extended magazine, the sheriff said. Investigators didn't immediately know how many rounds the magazine could hold, he said.

Long was a US Marine Corps veteran, Dean said.

Quote:
Deputies had several interactions with Mr. Long the last few years, the sheriff said, including a reported disturbance at his home in April that prompted mental health specialists to talk to him. The health specialists, who discussed with Mr. Long his military service and whether had suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, determined that he was not an immediate danger to himself or others and that he could not be involuntarily taken to a mental hospital.

Witnesses recalled a chaotic scene at the bar, which was filled with hundreds of people, many of them college students: A gunman opening fire, first at a security guard, as patrons dropped to the dance floor, hid under tables and broke windows to escape.

Sheriff Dean said that at least six off-duty officers were inside when the gunman opened fire. A parent told Sheriff Dean that “they stood in front of my daughter” and protected her. Witnesses also told local media about patrons in the back of the bar who broke out a window and helped a number of people escape.

Quote:
The sheriff, his voice cracking, identified one victim as Sgt. Ron Helus, who was shot when he entered the building.

“He died a hero because he went, he went in to save lives, to save other people’s lives,” Sheriff Dean said.

My son has a friend who survived both shootings, that poor girl. It’s reported that they need O negative blood, my son has that type and is on his way to La Reina high to donate.

Wonder if it's the same person, or 2 different persons? What a coincidence. Nope, seems like a few were at both shootings:

Quote:
The Ventura County sheriff, Geoff Dean, said that the suspect, Ian David Long of Newbury Park, Calif., apparently took his own life after being confronted by officers responding to the Wednesday night attack. The .45-caliber handgun he used was purchased legally, but had been outfitted with an extended magazine.

The shooting came just over a year after 58 people were killed at a country music festival in Las Vegas when a gunman opened fire from a high-rise hotel room. There was an eerie parallel between the two shootings as some of the same people who emerged from the bar, the Borderline Bar & Grill, described having survived the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip.

My buddy is a photographer and does work for the bar. He says he didn't recognize the shooter as being a regular customer. Wonder why he chose that venue as his target.

Quote:
Michael Millar, 25, who lives near the Borderline and is a regular, was on his way to the bar Wednesday night when people began to call him frantically asking if he was inside.

He said that the bar was popular with police officers and firefighters, and that it was often busy on Wednesdays because it hosts a college night and allows students under 21 to enter.

Mr. Weber said that many of the people he believed were at Borderline had attended the music festival in Las Vegas last year where dozens died.

If only there were more guns

Anyone donate to NRA yet? They need our help to arm more good people

This wouldn't have happened if everyone from age 3 on up were packing heat
