Dud on the Road… Facing a floor-spacing bigman, the Laker D got chewed up in the 130-115 road loss to the Magic.

The second unit with Ingram now at the point instead of Rondo, who is out with the injury, gave up an 11-1 run between the first and second quarter. But it was the six threes and too many second chances the team gave up in the second quarter that had them trailing by 9 at halftime. (Kuzma’s 4 first half turnovers didn’t help the cause, either.)

They fell apart completely midway through the third quarter. The soft D was giving up open layups and easy looks. Just no resistance at all as the lead ballooned to 20 points.

The Lakers struggled on multiple fronts in the game. Kuzma and Lonzo were largely MIA offensively, both hopeless in getting the ball through the net or playing impact ball. The bigs were flat footed and struggled with Vucevic’s perimeter game. Any mistake, he made them pay the price. Just an inability to defend anywhere on the court tonight.

“Our defense just failed us,” Luke said.

LeBron -- -- He had 15 points on 5-11 shooting and 5 assists in the first half. We sat him in the third after the lead ballooned and let him rest. His D was about as poor as everyone else’s. Once we fell back big, he started dialing it back a bit on both ends. Not enough help from others tonight on the road. “There were a lot of things that hurt us tonight, not just one thing,” LeBron said. He now gets to go back to his former teams with a game in Miami and Cleveland. Only one of those might be a little awkward. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 8-19 shooting (3-6 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 7 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and no fouls in 26 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: Sensational bounce pass with two hands at a sharp angle to McGee for the breakaway dunk. His pass to Lonzo who was fronted went out of bounds. He drew FTs getting out on the break, he made both. The D left him alone at the three line in transition so he knocked it down. He missed a backhand layup on a drive. He took a pass in close quarters from Lonzo on the break and scored the layup. He posted up, spun around Gordon and scored the layup. He airballed or had a three partially blocked. He attacked and was blocked. He missed a layup off a drive from the wing, but McGee cleaned it up. He bricked a tough fade out of a timeout. He muscled his way to the rim off a screen for FTs, he made one. He got a runway after Lonzo drew the D, fed him and LeBron threw down. He stood in and took a charge in transition to get a stop. He attacked, spun and was not close on the layup attempt. He attacked off the Lonzo screen, drew the D and lobbed to Chandler for the jam. He hit Kuzma curling for a dunk (play they run in Cleveland a lot). He circled off the screen, stepped back and knocked down the three. Second Half: Bad lob and it was easily picked off. He ball watched and his man snuck behind him to give up a dunk. He missed a wing jumper. He attacked and hit McGee for a layup. He blocked a shot on one end on help D, then took a pass from Ingram in transition and threw down on the other. He missed a 20-footer on a busted set. He missed a deep three. He attacked, spun and scored a layup. He missed a lefty layup. He iso’d on a switch and swished the sideline three. He missed a deep three.

Ball -- -- He didn’t score in the first half, going 0-3 and ended up with the donut for the night. He had a horrific airball on a pull-up from around the elbow where he missed that by a good two to three feet. He and LeBron again had some nice sequences off the two-man game. Occasionally, some good hands on D. But beyond that, not much real impact. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a quick pull-up three to start the game. He stripped a big on help D. He stripped a ball in transition to prevent a break. Poor D on the subsequent inbounds to give up a layup. He went to early when the screen was coming and then missed the three. He swiped the ball on the break, then attacked in transition and hit LeBron for the layup. He hit Stephenson for a corner three. He drew an offensive foul on his man as he tried to shed him on a screen. He hit LeBron for a dunk. He threw a pass away in transition. He bricked a pull-up bank from the midrange, not his strength. He was stripped, dunk the other way. Second Half: He airballed an open pull-up from the elbow. He missed a three. Bad pocket pass, turnover.

Ingram -- -- We staggered the rotation to have him as the backup point. Like last year, that seemed to activate his game. He had 4 assists in the first half and finished with 7 on the night. He missed both threes he took, unfortunately, but at least the midrange jumpers were open looks. Not thrilled when he posts up and settles for turnaround fades because he lacks strength. Much better when he faces up and attacks the paint. Overall, though, he looked much more comfortable tonight. A couple silver linings in this one and his passing game was one of them. He’s forced too much early on this season. The Stats: He scored 17 points on 7-13 shooting (0-2 from three, 3-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 7 assists and 1 foul in 34 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He attacked and fed McGee for the slam after drawing his defender. He missed an open wing three. He cleared out the side, spun on his man and dunked. He sank an iso baseline jumper over a big. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He was blocked on a drive after passing up an open three. He got bumped off the post and missed the fading turnaround, too weak. He worked the screen strong side and kicked to Hart in the corner weakside for the three. Nice recovery to challenge a perimeter shot and force a miss. He attacked and kicked to Hart for the three. He sank a fading, falling down turnaround in the post. Second Half: He attacked, bumped his man back and hit the short pull-up. He sank an open pull-up from the elbow working off a high screen in early offense. He hit LeBron trailing the break for the slam. He got bailed out of a bad shot on a fade across the lane on iso, getting FTs, he made one. He posted up, attacked around his man and scored a layup. He missed a baseline turnaround. He ball-faked and missed the FT jumper. He attacked a big off a screen and hit the short fade. He missed a wing three.

Kuzma -- -- Awful first half with 4 points on 2-6 shooting and 4 turnovers. He just struggled all night as the lead ballooned to 20 points. If he’s not shooting/scoring well, he’s a problem defensively. He did do a better job getting a few boards and a couple blocks, but a very weak effort. Usually, he makes teams feel him in some way. Whether it’s cutting off ball, in transition or occasionally knocking down a three this year. Tonight, he faded into the background badly. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-10 shooting (1-4 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 blocks, 5 turnovers and 2 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: He posted up and missed a short jumphook. He was stripped on a drive for a turnover. He smothered Gordon to force a brick on a drive. He gave up a layup on an inbounds late on a switch. He was called for a double dribble on a miscommunication. He wedged a three into the rim and backboard. He iso’d and stepped out of bounds, turnover. He was called for a foul using his off arm as he tried to score. He spun baseline and fumbled the ball out of bounds. He came off a Lonzo screen, curled into the paint, took the pass from LeBron and dunked. He curled into the paint, knocked a man down and hit the floater. Second Half: He forced his man into an airball on a turnaround. He attacked and his pass was picked off. He blocked a post-up attempt. He missed a three. He got a kind bounce on a three after a kickout. He up-faked, attacked a big and earned FTs, he made one. He stripped a man. He missed a lefty layup attempt on a drive. He missed a wing three.

McGee -- -- Covering a floor spacing big is tough. McGee and Chandler can’t easily patrol in drop coverage. Vucevic lit us up and the defense at the point of attack had no help. “He’s tough,” Luke said. “The way he can shoot the ball and score inside.” Vucevic finished with 36 points, including 4 offensive boards. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-7 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 16 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Ingram. He dunked off the bounce pass from LeBron on the break. He forced his man into a brick with the post D. He couldn’t hold on to a long bounce pass in transition. He worked the post and was tied up for a jumpball by the help D (he won that). He was hacked on a throwdown attempt, he made one FT. He cleaned up LeBron’s missed drive. Second Half: He hit a hook in early offense to start the second half. He was fouled on an offensive board. He gathered a baseline pass and scored a layup. He gave up back-to-back scores on his man with some weak D.

Hart -- -- He had 10 points on 4-6 shooting in the first half, hitting a couple threes, a midrange jumper and a layup. He’d sink three threes and had some really good moments defensively in the paint battling around the rim and post. But that perimeter D was quite a letdown tonight. Just awful at times. He was giving up straight-line drives and got backdoored. Painful. Those kinds of major breakdowns where guys coast in for easy scores really sap the energy out of a team. He had the team-low +/-. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 5-7 shooting (3-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 2 blocks and 2 fouls in 20 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He sank the corner three on the kickout from BI. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed an open wing three, short. He smothered his man on a drive to block a shot on one end, then was blocked himself in transition on the other. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He sank a short pull-up in the lane. He gave up a putback score not boxing out his man who crashed from the three line. He let a bad kickout go between his legs, should have had that. Second Half: He gave up a layup. He gave up a straight-line drive for a layup. He blocked Gordon trying to post him up. He sank a wing three popping out behind a screen. He got backdoored for a dunk. Wow, weak foul on the break on a challenge at the rim, that was a superb block.

Chandler -- -- “We blew a lot of coverages,” he said. First game without any real impact. He did team up with LeBron on his only score for one of the few highlights where he threw down a nice lob pass. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 3 boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: Illegal screen, turnover. He took a lower, slightly wide lob pass from LeBron and hammered it down. He gave up a three at the end of the half, sagging off his man too much. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Stephenson -- -- He sparked the team in the fourth quarter once we put the ball in his hands. He was kind of what the team needed. He played with energy and attacked the paint effectively. Just not enough of that from anyone else tonight on the offensive end. Unfortunately, the lead was just too big. Had it been maybe 15 instead of 20, perhaps things would have been interesting. He forced the Magic starters to return with some prolific fourth quarter scoring (nearly all his points came in the fourth), but they ultimately weren’t close. The Stats: He scored 19 points on 6-9 shooting (1-3 from three, 6-6 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a halfcourt three at the buzzer. Second Half: He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he made both. He swished a pull-up jumper from midrange off the screen. He drew FTs on iso, he made both. He blew past his man for a dunk. He crashed the glass and scored the putback. He iso’d drew the D and hit Svi for the three. He pulled down a rebound and took it coast to coast for a layup. He attacked in transition and earned FTs, he made both. He attacked and missed a layup and wanted the foul. He scored a layup after pretending to run out the clock.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Some good moments on the offensive glass where he had some putback points. The three ball was off the mark and not great shot selection. I’m worried he might miss Rondo the most in the next few games until the team gets some flow. We’ll see. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 3-9 shooting (0-3 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 4 boards (3 offensive) and 3 fouls in 28 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: He was fouled on a pull-up that was setup out of a timeout, he made both FTs. He sank a pull-up 20-footer on a busted play. He forced a jumper up trying to draw a foul and missed. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He scored a putback. He tipped in a missed jumper. He drew contact, threw it up and earned FTs, he made both. He missed a massive dunk attempt on the break. He showed the ball on a drive and was rejected out of bounds. He missed a corner three in transition. He airballed a forced three.

Beasley -- -- We went small in the fourth with him at the backup C. Vucevic ate him up. Really the weak spot of the fourth quarter comeback attempt. But at least good to see him do a little something on the offensive end. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-6 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 1 steal and 4 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He overpassed at the rim. He attacked off the three line, missed and tipped in the follow-up. He missed a three straight away. He attacked off the three line and scored an And-1 layup, he made the FT. He moved in off the open three line to hit the jumper from the top of the key. He deflected a pass.

Mykhailiuk -- -- Finally looking a bit like himself out there splashing the threes. He sank 2 of 3 and a couple more FTs to get his career high 8 points. Hopefully, this is a confidence booster. The team played well while he was out there, too, as he finished with the +5 to share the lead in that stat. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 2-3 shooting from three, 2-2 from the line and 1 foul in 11 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a corner three on a kickout. He drew FTs on the perimeter and made both. He swished a wing three on a kickout. He came off the double screen and hit the catch-and-shoot wing three.

Wagner -- -- He came in with 3 minutes left to make his NBA debut. Might have brought him in a bit sooner if you were going to use him. Beasley was pretty useless out there as a small ball C. Moe might have had a little more fight, although maybe not much. He missed his only three but looked mobile. “I’m a hundred percent,” he said of his health. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three. He was a +2 in 2 minutes. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a high arching, open wing three.

Walton -- -- Lakers up 5 when Chandler and KCP came in for McGee and Ingram… Hart in for LeBron, Lakers up 5… Kuzma out for Stephenson, Lakers up 5… Ingram in for Lonzo at the point… The Lakers led 31-25 after the first quarter… He started the McGee, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Ingram lineup… This unit lost the lead and Luke called a timeout down 2 after 3 minutes (11-1 run)… LeBron back in for Stephenson… Starters back in with Hart instead of Ingram down 2… Chandler in for McGee down 4… Defense gave up open threes and Luke called a timeout down 8… Ingram in for Hart… They gave up six threes in the second quarter… The Lakers trailed 62-53 at the half… Down 15 after barely over a minute and Luke called a timeout… A 6-0 run out of that timeout forced a Magic timeout… McGee out for Chandler after giving up a couple of easy scores… They fell apart completely after that to trail by 17… Really should bench all the Lakers starters right now… Kuzma, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Lonzo now as Luke tried to go small to spark something down 20… They trailed 100-81 heading into the fourth…Svi in for Hart down 18 with 10:30 left… Super small. Not sure who is PF here, looks like maybe Lonzo judging by the FT rebounding… Beasley and Ingram in to go with Lance, Svi and KCP… They cut it to 11 to force a timeout. The Magic with their starters back in… Beasley at the C spot getting bled a bit by Vucevic… Wagner in for Ingram… Too big a hole to dig out of…

With Lonzo, I wish he’d just keep shooting. Trae young has a ton (like every) of games where he is 5-15 and 1-7 from three with crappy defense and he puts up enough raw points that people lay off the efficiency. Lonzos efficiency shooting is up this season, but when he misses a few to start the games he loses all confidence and stops shooting.

If he were more like young or don mitchell, another low efficiency chucker I’m sure he’d get more respect.

Still believe in the kid, but a donut isn’t acceptable. I expect a big game from him tomorrow.

Zo can’t hit the side of a barn 4 nights out of 5.

Thanks DB!

Good to see Svi finally knock down a couple of threes. Everything else was bad. I wish I didn’t watch the game so I wouldn’t have to remember Lonzo’s airball or Hart’s insanely horrific perimeter defense.

Trae young is 7 for his last 34 and shooting 25% from 3 (7 of last 48). Even after tonight Lonzo is still shooting what, 40/37 while actually playing D? Lonzos lack of volume makes bad nights seem really bad. Lonzo was 5/8 from 3 in his last two games. Seems like everybody ignores the games where he shoots well. The narrative is that Trae young is the next steph curry and Lonzo doesn’t belong in the league...don’t get it.

Thanks, DB. In a blow-out game, it's good that Beez, Mo, and Svi got playing time. Though, Beez at the 5, against a legit big like Vucevic, is a bit of a problem, and not his fault. His natural position is the 4 spot. But, good to see him nontheless. Hopefully we can see more of him going forward.

Flush this one, and on to the next. Lakers!

Kuz as a starter doesn't look too good. Hart should get the start tomorrow, but Luke isn't that smart, so I suspect Kuz will keep starting

DB - you always produce whether it is a good or bad game!!

Top NBA teams have the highest efficiency rate in the third quarters, then we have the Lakers

The subs outscored the starters, enuf said

If Kuz is not effective offensively, his lack of defense makes him a liability on the court

Lonzo's problem is not his donut (as DFish stated), it is his lack of impact on games like this one

The kids are learning what is required when playing with a HOF superstar where every team will be bringing their A Game

Key is what did the kids learn and how will they bounce back

A big game? What's a big game? Lonzo's good games look average and his bad ones make him look like a bust. Please define "big game" to us.

what's a big game for a 2nd year player on a team w a star.....shutting down an All NBA 1st team player is a super impactful.. add 3 3s on top of that. May not be a "big" game, but it's a very good one.
1)he's not a scorer
2) he's on a good team w a ball dominant star

hard for people to put this in perspective when most young stars are scorers on bad teams... Do i also have to specify that Tatum and Mitchell were on teams last year with no offensive stud next to them last year, despite being on good teams.
Lonzo hasn't been great this year, but he's had good games. You can say the same about Mitchell and Tatum

...
...
...
..
.. and yes of course I'd like Lonzo to be more impactful offensively

A bit of an overstatement but he's been feast or famine shooting wise. He's shot 50% or higher in 40% of the games this season, and 40% or lower in the other 60%. He hasn't had a single average shooting game, it's been very efficient or inefficient.

Thanks DB great write up for a stinker of a game.

What is going on with Kuz? Maybe time to send him to the bench to get his game going again.

BI may be helped by this move to backup PG. Maybe he should start there and move ZO to play with the 2nd unit.

It is a little heartbreaking that after playing well we get spanked.

Ball - He had a horrific airball...

That's a good modifier for the entire team this game. Horrific. Especially for most of Luke's in-game adjustments, or lack thereof.

Hope to see a non-horrific comeback effort against the Heat.

IMO easily the worst played game of the season. Little to no defensive effort or energy after the first quarter. Lack of aggression on the offensive from Ball and Kuzma. Time for Luke to start pulling those two and give someone else a chance if those two are going to start slow.

Thanks DB. Excellent write-up as always.

Missed this game. From the sounds of it, I can be thankful that dealing with long lines and crowded stores spared me the experience of watching this stinker of a game.

Looks like we have an energy problem and a lot of holes to fix on defense.
