Frustrating, But They Got the W… The Lakers opened the game with a dominating 38-15 first quarter. If you want to watch 12 minutes of basketball that was thoroughly enjoyable, watch this. They were hustling on defense, getting second and third efforts with defenders fighting for stops. They had off-ball sequences on offense that were run to perfection. Watch this quarter, then turn off the TV.

“It was as good as we can play defensively, really,” Luke said. “We were active. We were all over the glass. We were contesting everything.”

With both LeBron and Lonzo sitting to start the next 12 minutes, the second unit without a point guard played … pointless. The Pacers gathered momentum in the next quarter as the Lakers pounded the dribble and settled for bad shots. By the end of the quarter, the 23-point lead was just 6. Well done.

After an 11-2 run, they trailed by 3 midway through the third quarter. Oh, boy.

Enter Josh Hart. He had sparked the team off the bench in the first half. Once he came in after that Pacer run, the Lakers went on a 15-4 run themselves. He just fits better. Luke said, he “gave us an incredible spark off the bench.”

After the second unit struggled again to start the fourth, Luke brought back the starters with Hart instead of Ingram and they took control. They built a lead and didn’t get passive down the stretch as they took the 104-96 win.

“When we defend, we’re very good,” LeBron said.

LeBron -- -- “I thought LeBron did a nice job of getting into the paint and controlling that game,” Luke said of LeBron’s late game offense. He was definitely a bit more active trying to work the ball close to the hoop and he ended being more successful than other games. Pretty noticeable difference when he’s off the court as we look rudderless offensively. Nice to see a couple new wrinkles in halfcourt sets for him to find cutters. The more we add to our playbook as time goes on, the tougher we get. “Our offense will continue to come,” LeBron said. The Lakers shot a miserable 56.5% from the line. LeBron missed four attempts himself. Hopefully, he can gas it up and go big again tomorrow. The team had an opportunity to blow this game open early on and get him some rest, but they missed Rondo tonight when LBJ wasn’t on the floor. The Stats: He scored 38 points on 15-27 shooting (2-7 from three, 6-10 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +19. The Action: He zipped a bounce pass through traffic from the high post to a cutting Ingram. He drew FTs in transition, he missed both. He iso’d and sank the baseline pull-up. He outlet to McGee for a dunk. He posted up, faced up and quickly attacked for a layup. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He hit a runner off the screen-roll with Lonzo. He lobbed to Ingram for the dunk off the UCLA cut. He was stripped on a spin. He might have gotten away with a push on an inbounds and scored the layup. He iso’d and sank a wing jumper. Sloppy pass out of bounds on a kickout. He attacked the paint and hit the turnaround fade. He missed a midrange fade on a post up. He ran clock, attacked and kicked to KCP for the three. He took an inbounds with 4.5 left and was fouled as he attacked the rim, he made both FTs. He somehow recovered a long pass under the hoop and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He pushed out the break and hit Kuzma for the dunk. Bad fade on an iso and he missed, too off balance. He missed a long step-back three. Second Half: Not paying attention on an inbounds, turnover. He missed a corner three. He airballed a fade instead of going up strong. He fumbled/threw an outlet away. He clanked a jumper against a double team. He attacked and hit the short baseline jumper. He sank a step-back three behind a screen. He threaded a pass to Kuzma on the break who was hacked. He missed a deep three. He backdoored his man and Chandler found him for the layup. He spun at the FT line, attacked and scored a layup. He was blocked on a fade. He charged in transition. He missed a deep three. He took a charge stepping in on a rotation. He attacked a crowd and was blocked. He swished a wing three on a handoff. He attacked left, spun right and scored the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He drew FTs on the roll with Lonzo, he made one. He swished a tough wing fade. He sank another tough fade from about 18 feet out against a big. He was blocked on a layup. He was fouled on a drive, he made one FT.

Ball -- -- I’d give him the excuse of the ankle if he didn’t have a superb track down block early in the game. That was a superb hustle play and showed he wasn’t going to be limited. That play was mentioned by multiple teammates afterward. He looked mobile out there despite the twist from the previous game, so no ankle excuses for other issues. Boy, between him not doing enough offensively and Ingram doing too much, they were highly ineffective. At times he seemed surprised when he got the ball on offense. Just not involved and really not trying to be. So much for the more aggressive play we’ve seen recently. He does do a really good job setting screens. He and Ingram actually looked effective when they teamed up in that regard. He had a couple of screens in the first quarter to free up Ingram cutting off ball for scores for a bounce pass and lob for scores. These were set plays so expect to see more of that. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-6 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 2 blocks, 4 turnovers and 4 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He stripped a man out of bounds. Nice help D down low to force a layup miss. He hit LeBron on the screen-roll for a score. Great hustle back court to reject a layup from behind. He inbounded to LeBron for a layup. He jumped a passing lane off ball and it resulted in a double dribble by the passer. He scooped up a loose ball and scored a layup. He missed a jumphook in the middle of the paint. Long outlet to LeBron for an And-1. He pushed it up with speed and missed a layup at high speed not using the off hand on the gather. He swiped a ball, got caught in the air by the rim with no one around and threw it away. He was stripped on a spin. Second Half: He kept a ball alive on the offensive board and it led to Laker FTs. Pocket pass to McGee for a floater. He missed a wide open corner three. He missed a wing three on a kickout. He missed an open corner three. Pocket pass to LeBron for FTs.

Ingram -- -- We started off the game so nice. We had some set plays for Ingram, including a UCLA cut that resulted in a lob and another off-ball cut off another Lonzo screen for a score to start the game. Love seeing that -- the off-ball stuff for Ingram within the halfcourt sets has been virtually non-existent. That, at least, is growth and some recognition by the coaches (finally) that we needed to do more in this regard. Outside of that, it was pretty ugly. We put the ball in his hands to lead the second units and they floundered. A lot of ball pounding and little that was effective while doing that. Glad they didn’t close with him on the floor tonight. Hart was much better. BI had the team-worst -12. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-15 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-5 from the line) to go with 1 board, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 blocks, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 31 minutes. He was a -12. The Action: He came off a Lonzo screen at the elbow, cut to the hoop and scored a layup off the bounce pass from LeBron. He threw down a lob dunk from LeBron coming off another Lonzo screen. He hit Hart on the break for a layup. He missed a pull-up from 17 feet. He missed a 15-footer and wanted the foul. Hesitation dribble and he scooped in a layup never leaving the floor. Too much dribbling and it resulted in a bad possession. He attacked off a screen and drew FTs, he made one. He couldn’t finish a layup on a cut. He airballed the layup finish attempt and went down. Second Half: He hit a turnaround 10-footer to start the half. He missed a wing three. He was fouled on a pull-up at the FT line, he made the FT. He missed a 33-footer trying to beat the shotclock. He missed an open pull-up from midrange against the drop coverage. Horrible telegraphed pass trying to find KCP in the corner, turnover. He blocked a man in the post. He drew FTs up against the shotclock on a long jumper, he missed both. He pounded the dribble, attacked, overpowered his man and scored the layup. He airballed a long wing jumper off a horrible set. XXX

Kuzma -- -- Some early foul trouble that kind of sidetracked his game a little tonight. Again, the three ball for him has been MIA. He’s missing open looks he was money on last season. I expect at some point, he’s going to catch fire from three, but it’s a struggle now. Defensively, he’s again shown flashes of better play. He had great defensive stand late in the game where he ended getting the stop with a charge on help D. He also hit the boards like you want from your PF, pulling down 9. Keep up the effort on that end, Kuz. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-9 shooting (1-5 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He grabbed a blocked shot, pushed it out and scored a layup. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. Two fouls and he sat early. He attacked from the corner and scored a layup. He missed a wing three. He filled the lane on the break and dunked when LeBron hit him. He missed a corner three. He missed a floater on the baseline and went down hard with no call. Second Half: Quick foul to start the second half. He drew FTs on a floater, he made one. He was hacked as he went to throwdown on the break, he made one FT. He hit Hart diving for an And-1 layup. He missed an open wing three. Great rotation on the perimeter, then he helped later to draw a charge and get a stop.

McGee -- -- Luke mentioned that McGee set the tone with a block to ignite a break early on. There was one sequence where all five Pacers headed down court on a break with only McGee back defensively. He blocked the shot and turned the ball up court. Unfortunately, like this game, the good start on that play backfired as he fumbled the ball away at the rim and resulted a break and score the other way. Too many turnovers in this one. Luke mentioned the opportunity for McGee to work on defending another perimeter shooting big tonight…showing the issue is definitely a concern for the coaches. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-6 shooting to go with 8 boards (4 offensive), 3 assists, 4 blocks, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He rejected a shot to ignite a break. He denied another drive next time down. He challenged a shot, leaked out and dunked on the subsequent outlet. Short-roll kickout to Kuzma for three. He blocked a drive as the only man back with 4 or 5 Pacers, but then he fumbled away the finish on the other end. He missed an awkward layup attempt on the roll. Second Half: He tried to shoot while falling down and missed. Inbounded when LeBron wasn’t paying attention, turnover. He trailed the break, took a pass, attacked and scored a layup off a couple long steps. Lane violation to erase a point. He hit a floater off the pocket pass. He threw a ball away but blocked the shot in transition (should have been a goaltend). He recovered to the dunker spot to reject a layup. Wild hook on a busted offensive sequence and he missed.

Hart -- -- Luke mentioned him multiple times after the game and rightly so. Frankly, I would have liked to see more than the 25 minutes. He had 3 steals in the first half. He was an instant impact off the bench turning defense into offense. Good job defending the perimeter shooters on the Pacers. He also had a couple posts sequences where we overhelped and sent a double, but I think we still escaped from both without giving up a score. He sank a three and attacked the rim for scores (loved the dive off Kuzma’s post to score an And-1). He said the ankle felt good. Hopefully, he’s back to his self again. The Stats: He scored 13 points on 6-7 shooting (1-2 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 3 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He swiped a pass a second after entering, gave it up, got it back and scored the layup. He drew a foul on a bigman as he defended the post. He attacked and kicked out to KCP for a three. He blindsided a man, swiped the ball and bounced to KCP for the dunk. He airballed a three on a swing pass. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the ball and took it for a dunk. He scored off a pass from Beasley. Second Half: He sank a wing three off a swing pass. Off-ball dive and Kuzma found him from the post for the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He attacked off the three line and was blocked or lost the ball. He attacked off a tap out, took all kinds of contact and muscled in the layup with no call.

Chandler -- -- Luke mentioned his defensive intensity trying to fire up the team and the fans. LeBron had the +19 to lead the team, but Tyson was a +18. Good job on position D and grabbing the boards. I liked how he didn’t give shooters room when switched on the perimeter. He also blocked a couple shots which is good to see. He needs to let Hart defend his man in the post and not help. Some struggles powering up in traffic for scores, but good job setting screens and not getting whistled for a moving screen. Up against Dallas tomorrow. “It going to take the full team’s effort,” Chandler said. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 0-3 shooting (3-4 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 26 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He blocked a drive from behind on help D. He tried to throwdown over a man on the two-man game and drew FTs, he made one. He couldn’t power in a layup. Second Half: He couldn’t power up a layup, got it back and was blocked out of bounds. He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made both. Sweet bounce pass from the high post to LeBron backdooring his man for a layup. Flagrant-foul as he got caught in the air on a pumpfake. He rejected a drive.

Stephenson -- -- Short minutes. Brief first half run of 5 minutes. He was actually a +5, but Luke decided to sit him in the second half against his former team. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting to go with 1 board, 1 steal and no fouls in 5 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: Pocket pass to Chandler for FTs on the dunk attempt. He knocked a ball loose to ignite a break. He was blocked out of bounds on a drive. He iso’d and missed a long pull-up jumper. Second Half: He did not play.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He knocked down three threes. Guys were finding him on kickouts spotting up and he filled the role. Luke praised both Hart and KCP for navigating the screens on D and not giving their men space. KPC was in on a key play late in the game. Evans muscled him on the way to the rim, but blocked himself on the rim on a finger roll. On the other end, KCP hit a big three on a kickout. That was a 5-point switch that got the Lakers some separation. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-7 shooting (3-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no fouls in 18 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He rattled down a corner three off a kickout. He busted out off the Hart steal and dunked. He sank the corner three on the kickout from LBJ. He missed a sideline three on a kickout. He missed a three trying to beat the shotclock. Second Half: He missed a three trying to draw a foul. Nearly overpowered for a layup but Evans was blocked by the rim. On the other end, he sank a wing three on a kickout.

Beasley -- -- A short 4-minute stint to start the second quarter that helped the Pacers gain momentum. He was foul prone, but did manage a couple of layups on the offensive end. Luke doubled down on that lineup to start the fourth. That predictably failed again. Beasley was a -9 in 9 minutes with 4 fouls and 2 turnovers. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 3-4 shooting to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 9 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a short fade. He grabbed a loose ball, attacked the rim and scored a layup. His pass was swiped. He reversed off the short feed. He lost the ball, turnover. He hit Hart for a score. Second Half: He regained a pass and banked for a score.

Walton -- -- A 13-0 run to open the game for L.A… McGee out Lakers up 13-2… Up 14, Hart in for Kuzma who had two fouls… Timeout again with the Lakers up 23-5 with 4:34 left in the quarter… Lance in for Ingram out of that timeout… The Lakers dominated with a 38-15 first quarter… McGee, Beasley, Hart, KCP, Ingram lineup… No chemistry in this lineup to start the quarter… Timeout with the lead trimmed to 18. Kuzma and Ball in… McGee and KCP out to go with the starters and Chandler up just 16… Timeout lead down to 12… Can we sit Ingram for Hart and involve Lonzo more, please?... Timeout with the lead down to 8. This is ridiculous… Hey, Josh Hart back in with a minute left and the lead down to 6… Outscored 35-18 in the second quarter… The Lakers led 56-50 at the half… Chandler in, Lakers up 5… Tied up a minute later… Timeout down 3 with 4:44… Hart in for Ingram… KCP in for Ball… Lakers rolling a bit to regain an 8-point lead… Flagrant-1 on Chandler… The Lakers led 83-75 heading into the fourth. What lineup will Luke go with?... McGee, Beasley, Hart, KCP, Ingram lineup… The lead was trimmed to 4 as he milked this lifeless lineup much longer than he should have…. Wholesale subs. All starters with Hart instead of Ingram. Took them a little bit to get warmed up… Then KCP for Hart, uggh. Should keep Hart out there somehow… Hart in for KCP 10-point lead… LeBron taking over to close… Luke was happy with three of the quarters and felt the team had some progress…

Thank you Bron for going god mode to get us the win. Shout out to Lonzo and McGee and Chandler too.

Edit - ugh, forgot to include Hart in my shout outs. He was great again today. Hopefully a sign his ankle is getting better.

There were a few sequences by Lonzo where I wanted to kick his butt.

I cannot wait until he gets more experience and quits making all these rookie type mistakes.

Blech!!! And I am a UCLA fan who wants to see him succeed.

I was getting back into my old feelings figuring the game was over and we were simply going to lose.

It was really nice to see Lebron step up and save the game for us.

Just watched the highlights of the game on youtube, and I have one question: is everyone in Indiana color blind? Those Pacers' uniforms are hands down the worst color combination I've seen.

No sh*t, those are ugly uniforms, I said the same to my wife. She thought they were cute, so that pretty much sums it up.

Bad game but I will take any win we can get. Moments when we just need to win. Too much of the young guys in the squad. They will start to play better with the time. Maybe after AS break.

What do you think, would Caruso have been of help?
Or what if Luke had one of Lonzo/LeBron in the game all the time? maybe that would have made Lonzo a bit more aggressive even?

Sure. Someone need to lead these dogs without a leash. They look like bunch of chickens running around.

We're really missing Rondo. Our 2nd unit is completely lost out there.

Man, we miss having Jules in this team. I highly doubt Magic and Rob just let him walk willingly. Must have been a real pissing match going on with them and Randle and Mintz to just let him go.

I mean, we knew we weren't getting PG13, and we still met him walk. Insane.

Yep. I think it has to do Luke not using him at PF no more. Now we will see Lance minutes goto Beasley.

Hart's finishing the game helped after he was inserted in for BI. I'm dubious about BI's "PG" role as he takes so long to set up the offense. I think we could consider a closing lineup of:

Lonzo
KCP
Hart
Kuz
LBJ

which would in theory be flying all over the place on defense and opening the floor. I wouldn't play this lineup for a long period as it's small but teams would be hard pressed to defend all that spacing.

Good news: Lakers are winning with essentially one player. If the rest of the team pulled their collective heads out of their asses this team could be ferocious.

Bad news: None of them look like they are capable of pulling their heads out of their ass's.

Thanks DB! I missed this game.

Good to hear that Hart is regaining his mobility. Hard to defend with a bad wheel. Hart and KCP both playing well in the same game is a huge plus imo.

I don't know what to think about Ingram. I hope both he and Luke figure out his role with this team, because he can actually be a good player. Certainly not point guard; we miss Rondo pretty bad right now. Heck, at this stage I'd be happy to see Caruso jump in at point, but he's injured too.

Great to see the Lakers won though! Let's hope Q1 is a preview of coming events.

Thanks DB! Hope Zo can gain confidence in FT's, 3-ptr's and what to do with the ball inside of 10 feet. Hope BI can find an effective role on offense. So far, point guard and ISO have been ruled out.

A lot to hope for...

Watching BI or Lance run the offense with iso ball is ugly. No player movement, always running against the clock, then a forced, contested shot.
