Quote:
A student at the University of Texas at San Antonio had police called on her by a professor after she had put her feet up on one of the classroom chairs.

The educator, identified by the university in a statement as biology professor Anita Moss, led university police to the student Monday during her Anatomy & Physiology 1 class and watched as the student was escorted out.

Apurva Rawal, a student in the class, told NBC News he didn’t feel the student was being disruptive and decided to share a video of the event on Twitter.

Quote:
“So this happened today in class, a girl had her feet up and the professor called the police after calling our class uncivil,”

The video shows Moss talking to university police before leading them to another side of the classroom where the young woman, whose identity wasn't released, is seated and asked to go with the officers. The room is silent as her classmates watch the student leave and the professor head toward the front of the auditorium.

Students who were there in the classroom said the professor had confronted the girl on Monday based on an incident she had with her on Friday, when she asked young woman to put her feet down during a lecture. The girl, according to a joint statement issued by the students on Twitter, "complied".

Yasmine Lane, one of the students who was there, confirmed the account and told NBC News that the professor had come in Monday with student conduct guidelines in hand seeking to talk to the student.

"We personally didn't understand the magnitude of getting her exported," Lane said, adding that she could overhear the teacher talking to the student about what had happened on Friday before the teacher pulled out her phone to call the cops.

Rawal said he felt something needed to be done about the student’s ousting after witnessing the whole exchange.

“I was inspired to share this video because I believe an abuse of power of this magnitude deserved to have a spotlight shined on it in order for justice to be served,” Rawal said.

But Lane, who knows the student and is also black, said that even though the circumstances were “unwarranted,” she doesn’t believe the incident had to do with race.

“She’s been very irritable lately —more toward the semester,” Lane said. "She’s just been very stressed and that's what led for her decision to have her escorted by cops."

The university's president, Taylor Eighmy, issued a statement to students Monday saying the school is looking at the incident though an investigation into academic management of the classroom.

By Tuesday, Eighmy said that those conducting the investigation had met with the escorted student and with Moss and will allow another professor to teach the class for the rest of the semester.

Quote:
“No matter the outcome of the investigations, the incident shows issues that extend far beyond the events of yesterday,”

Quote:

“The reactions expressed through social media, emails, phone calls and group meetings I’ve attended confirm that feelings of marginalization on the part of some students—especially our African American students—are real and profound.”

UTSA had wrapped up its investigations by Wednesday night and revealed that the teacher was only found liable for classroom mismanagement and displaying “poor judgment.”

According to the report’s summary, it was decided that racial bias was not a factor “based primarily on the opinion of the student” who chose not to file a formal discrimination complaint.

Vertical in 2018?

If this was becoming irksome to the teacher, she should've talked to the student and threatened to lower her grade if she continued to put her feet up. They can assign whatever grade they want to. I was in a class once where a male and female student were in a tangential argument about whether animals are conscious beings or something like that and the male student suddenly said, "No, you're WRONG." to the female and he got his ass chewed by the teacher, who was not to be mucked with. Not saying she was a feminist, but she was feisty. He had the misfortune of blurting that out while he was sitting right next to her. He got chewed bad, class was quiet. He was so emasculated that he claimed he had to leave for something else, however, we could see him pacing in the hallway for the rest of the class thru the door's window. The professor agreed to keep him in if he apologized, but he got his grade dropped by one letter no matter what. The girl involved sat next to me in the next class and told me and some other fellow classmates the outcome.

As far as this girl is concerned, you can't be showing your ass just because you feel like it. If the professor tells you not to do something and you continue to do it, you bring on whatever the professor decides to do on yourself. The campus police was overkill, but she set herself up for that. College is where you should learn to lose all of your brat skills that you learned up to adulthood. I don't feel one bit sorry for her. Perhaps she was under stress or some mental condition, but that's to be reported later if we get a chance to hear her side of the story.

just because another well meaning black student says i dont think it was about race doesnt mean it wasnt.

meaning this. if the professor was mentally healthy and felt happy that day /that semester. lets say she never calls the cops on the black student.

but the reason you say its probably racism is this. if that student was white male or female. would she have called the cops on them even in her mental state? thats the question I can almost guarantee the other black student never asked herself before making her comment.

A lot of N words have been yelled out and Black B words have been yelled out after said white person or other nationality got MAD/ANGRY in a negative mental state. When they are all happy, they were not saying those things. Who you are is not who you act as if you are when everything is all happy time. Who you are is a combination of who you are in good times and bad and all times in between. if all i have to do is tick you off or you get upset about some other stuff and now you turn racist on me and start calling the cops like permit patty and the likes then we already know what it really is about.

and lastly, students are paying for that stuff. the cops should be the last thing on the list. the student is a paying customer. this idea that the teacher rules all in the classroom is when you're in high school at a public institution. now you're paying for your schooling. so sorry, you can't just treat the customer any way you see fit.thats not YOUR classroom. its the customers class room, you just work there.

That's not the case considering the outcome. The professor won that battle of wills. The professor still owns the class, even in college. The professor is likely to be backed up by the institution who pays -them-. This is time immemorial stuff here. I hope no one would advise their children to show their ass in public and put their feet up on the chair, especially if it's just to goad the professor into a reaction (if that was her intent -- not saying it was, I dunno).

More often than not, tho, the end result will be bad for the student. In what world can a student (background being immaterial) put their feet up and continue to do so when the teacher has told them to stop? Not on this planet... The only way to justify this is perhaps by the student telling the professor that she was feeling stressed. Maybe curry some understanding from the prof. I remember walking into a class once and the prof asked me out of nowhere if I was ok because I must've been frowning. I never had that one before at any level, but it does tell me that most professors are empathetic to teen angst considering they work with it.

The communication between both parties had better be there for a positive resolution, tho. It appears that wasn't the case here. Perhaps the professor could've dialogued again before snapping. I dunno, judgment call. Had she, then maybe it wouldn't have immediately shot from warning to expulsion by security. Iono. As a student, since it's your grade, your money, your placement, ultimately your dipoloma, you'd better not chance anything. That's where I can't sympathize. This was a really dumb thing to do to piss off an instructor. It's hard to sympathize with dumb even though you may sympathize with teenage angst. In this world, if you F around, you're eventually going to F around with "the wrong one"(copyright). It's best to just sit there and mind your Ps and Qs if you're a lowly student. She might even recognize that at this point. That whole thing was pointless and damaging to her success. PS: I'm assuming she's paying her tuition at this moment. For many students, their parents are paying their tuition. Now, if you're (bleep) around with THEIR money, that's even worse.

The best outcome since it already went to this level of fubar is for the girl to learn from it, seek whatever help & TLC that she may need, and put her head back into her schooling and get past this. This can either motivate her or it could be a negative that gnaws away at her and her ultimate success. Hope for the former. Sometimes teens need a teachable moment about hard core realities of life. I was no different, you were no different, she's no different. Teens sometimes don't know what they don't know, so in respect to her, all of my points above may not have computed in her growing brain. When she gets my age, she may sound like me.

Quote:

Professor Moss had repeatedly asked students to take their feet off chairs in what was described as a "pet peeve" of the professor, according to a report by interim dean Howard Grimes published Wednesday.

The situation escalated "incrementally" during the semester and apparently boiled over on Friday when Moss confronted the student again. Moss attempted to send the student an email on Sunday telling her not to show up for class until they could discuss the situation, but the message was mistakenly sent to another student in the class,

When the student showed up for class on Monday, Moss told her she had to leave. The student was confused, and Moss showed her the email. Then Moss threatened to call the police.

Grimes writes in the report that the student said that "this class is very important to me and attending this class is part of my grade and I do not want to miss the lecture as we have a test coming on Wednesday."

When Moss reiterated her threat to call the police, the student said, "do what you need to do." The student would be taken away by three police officers without incident.

"I did not believe she was calling them [police] but, sure enough, they came a few minutes after she had stopped talking on the phone," a student in the class told ABC News. "They escorted [her] out and once the police had left out of the classroom, a lot of students started telling [the lecturer] she had done wrong, she was being disruptive of class time and she had taken matters out of control."

Here is the University of Texas San Antonio Student Code of Conduct:

[url=University of Texas at San Antonio]Student Code of Conduct[/url]

If the faculty member believed a student was in violation of the Code of Conduct, there is a very specific protocol that's been set up and must be followed:

1) File a grievance with the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards

2) Then the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards will send a written letter to the student notifying them of the grievance and setting a time for a meeting to talk about the grievance and seek a potential resolution

3) The purpose of the meeting is to allow Student Conduct and Community Standards to discuss, for the purposes of investigating, the alleged incident/violation(s) with the student. At this meeting the student is given a copy of the Student Code of Conduct.

4) When the student elects not to dispute the facts upon which the charges are based and agrees to the sanctions Student Conduct and Community Standards assesses, the student may execute a written waiver of the hearing procedures yet retain the right to appeal the decision of Student Conduct and Community Standards only on the issue of the sanction. This administrative disposition shall be final and there shall be no subsequent proceedings regarding the charges.

5) In any case where the accused student disputes the facts upon which the charges are based and elects the formal hearing as the decision-making approach, or refuses to execute a written waiver of a hearing, such charges shall be heard and determined by a fair and impartial Hearing Officer. A Hearing Officer will be chosen in accordance with the procedures of the institution.

Regardless of ones feeling about Professor / Teacher authority in the classroom, it doesn't allow them to ignore Official University Rules and Policy. Those rules are put in place partly to avoid situations such as this where a University employee seems incapable of understanding basic principles and then proceeds to violate a students protected rights by engaging in a misappropriation of University resources for other than their intended purpose.

You're doing the best you can to justify the right of a kid (paying student or not) to do something childish and outside of the expected norms that are shared by everyone else in that classroom, not just the teacher. At worst, I sense that I'm about to get pulled into "tangentials" ultimately relating to a brat putting her feet up because she paid. I don't know if you're arguing for her right to do that or against the teacher for having her ejected by security.

I still don't think a paying student has cause to do whatever they want, because feet may be harmless, but other things under that premise may actually be annoying to the other paying students or disruptive to the teacher (in the desk case, it was per that teacher, but I digress). Let's say she took her shoes off every day and her feet stunk and disturbed others? Let's say the professor had a no food/drinks policy that she could give 2 sh'ts about.

Ah, forget it. I know you're eventually going to tire me out, but this would be a WWW-win re: a brat with her feet up. End of day, there are more noble pursuits for both of us. I'm gonna pull the ripcord. Happy New Year just the same, dude.

PS: I know her feet on the desk aren't a huge travesty, I'm just arguing for proper behavior that 99% of her cohorts know and respect. Maybe I'm getting old... The worst case of a student trying to claim ultimate rights to do anything they wanted was that dude at Berkeley in the 90s who walked around fully nude. Went to classes dangling without a fig leaf. That actually broke public decency laws, but it didn't stop the idiot from trying. I think he tried somehow to counter it legally, but failed.

I'm so glad I don't live in the US anymore. The victim culture is just disgusting.

Lol, a kid put her feet on a chair, got chewed and took her feet down, then the professor sends her an email to not show up in class until they meet, but sends it to another kid, then tells the student to leave when she shows up, and then calls the police when the student does not leave. And finding that excessive is victim culture.

so if she didnt put her feet up again when she returned to the next class then this was definitely an overreach of authority.

and lastly, students are paying for that stuff. the cops should be the last thing on the list. the student is a paying customer. this idea that the teacher rules all in the classroom is when you're in high school at a public institution. now you're paying for your schooling. so sorry, you can't just treat the customer any way you see fit.thats not YOUR classroom. its the customers class room, you just work there.

I completely disagree with this. You can’t just walk onto the court at Staples Center while the Lakers are playing? “But I’m a paying customer? The players don’t own this court, I do! The players just work here!” At a Lakers game, you are paying for the privelage of being entertained. If you the customer step out of line for what is considered normal or acceptable, you will be escorted out.

You are going to college for the privelage of being educated. The professor has every right to expect appropriate behavior and to eject a student if they misbehave.

Imagine going to hear Carl Sagan, or Stephen Hawking, or Einstein, lecture at a college and displaying inappropriate disrespectful behavior.

Any professors/teachers here? What’s your take?

Was a clinical professor couple yrs ago, had a shift where a resident were verbally complaining about staffs and patients. Told her to stop couple times, she kept mouthing off. Staffs were getting agitated. I sent her home for the day. I’m sure she didn’t break any written protocol but I had to maintain my ER (both staffs and patients). Not sure if similar to this teacher (feet up might not disrupt the class at all) but I kinda understand the whole need to maintain control of ‘classroom’

To clarify, this professor’s action to call police officers was wrong, way too excessive

Sounds to me like both parties share in the blame.

The student should be respectful of the classroom rules. If the intent was to be defiant, or the student in question hasn't grown up enough to respect rules and authority, that's on them. If it's just a case of a student trying to break a bad habit, maybe more patience or self control by the instructor should have been exercised.

Some teachers (especially at the college level) can be tyrants. On a few occasions when I was at CSUN or at a Jr. college, the professor would interject their political beliefs or own bias. I remember an English writing class, where we were assigned into groups of three and had to right an essay on who should be the next governor of California , Pete Wilson, or Kathleen Brown. The teacher was quite clear where her sympathies were, and may have suggested that voting and promoting K. Brown would earn better grades.

I wasn't having any of those horse-feathers, and was very clear how I would prepare my paper, in my support for Wilson. As my female classmates heard my view, the teacher butted into our group and told the ladies not to listen to that "white male Protestant" and to think for themselves. One of the ladies in the group privately told me She was voting for Wilson, but would fabricate her paper for Brown just to curry favor with the teacher. As it was, I stuck to my guns, got the A on my paper, and moved on. The teacher probably didn't care for my conservatism, but I was respectful of her classroom and still expressed my opinion.

A Christmas Story

Wilbur and David have been friends since they were kids and have always been competitive with one another. They went to rival colleges, competed for the same girls, and eventually opened up competing Insurance Agencies in their small home town. Every Friday they get together to hang out and discuss their week, and what a week it had been.

Wilbur and Dave have been having similar issues at their respective offices.

1) Both have been dealing with employees who occasionally put recyclables in the garbage bin. They've each held countless staff meetings to discuss the issue, but it still keeps happening. It's like these uncivilised people are just purposely disrespecting them.

2) Both have also been dealing with employees who use the last of the toilet paper and don't put on a new roll, instead leaving no toilet paper for the next employee. Again, they've each held countless staff meetings to discuss the issue, but it still keeps happening. It's like these uncivilised people are just purposely disrespecting them.

Wilburs Week:

On Monday, after finishing lunch at his desk, Wilbur went to throw his empty Coke can in the recycle bin and noticed an empty can of Orange Crush in the garbage next to it. The can had the remnants of lipstick on it, so he knew it must have belonged to Loretta since she's the only female in the office and she drinks Orange Crush exclusively. Wilbur is instantly agitated. On his way back to his office, he makes a quick stop to the restroom, grabs his favourite Fly Fishing Magazine, and sits down to take care of business. As he's finishing up, he realises there is no toilet paper next to the toilet. Now he's furious. He rips out a few pages of his favourite magazine, cleans up, then returns to his office.

After giving himself a few minutes to calm down, he calls Loretta into his office and reads her the riot act for being so uncivilised and disrespecting him by putting the empty can of Orange Crush in the trash trash. She quietly listens to him go off, waits for him to finish, apologises, and returns to her desk to continue working.

At the end of the day, Wilbur was still pretty ticked off and after picking up his wife, he shares his frustrations with her about all the chaos at the office. In such a rage he loses track of his speed and get's pulled over. When the officer approaches Wilbur lowers his window and greets the Officer "Hello Officer McDougal", and the Officer responds "Do You know why I pulled you Over?" Wilbur responds "No Sir". The officer responds "You were speeding", then Wilburs wife chimes in, "He wasn't really going that fast", and the Officer responds, "Shut up Whore. I wasn't talking to you", Wilbur turns to his wife and says "Yes, Be Quiet Darling, The Officer knows best . Sorry Officer". The Officer responds "License, Registration, Insurance, and Give Me Your Keys". Wilbur complies and thanks the Officer for his service. The Officer writes Wilbur a ticket and then he and his wife are on their way to dinner. During dinner Wilbur decided he was going to email Loretta and tell her not to come to the office tomorrow until they can talk about her uncivilised can disposal behavior, but he inadvertantly sends the email to Steve by mistake.

The next day, Wilbur arrives to the office and is appalled to see Loretta sitting at her desk and walks up to her and tells her she has to leave. Puzzled by what's going on, Loretta asks - "Why?". Feeling again disrespected, Wilbur hurriedly grabs his phone and shows her the email he sent her telling her not to come to work and if she doesn't leave, he's going to call the cops. Dumbfounded, Loretta respectfully says: "Do What You Gotta do", then continues with her work. True to his word, Wilbur calls the cops and when they arrive they escort Loretta off the premises without incident.

Daves Week:

On Tuesday, after finishing lunch at his desk, Dave went to throw his empty Pepsi can in the recycle bin and noticed an empty can of Root Beer in the garbage next to it. The can had the remnants of lipstick on it, so he knew it must have belonged to Tiffany since she's the only female in the office and she drinks Root Beer exclusively. Dave rolls his eyes. On his way back to his office, he makes a quick stop to the restroom, grabs his favourite Car Magazine, and starts to sit down to take care of business but because of his employees prior carelessness, decides to check if there is toilet paper next to the toilet 1st. Good thing he did, because the roll was empty. He finishes up, then returns to his office.

Along the way, he stops at Tiffany's desk and quips "I'm going to have to give you a written warning about the recycling in hopes that that get's you to take it more seriously. She listens to him, waits for him to finish, apologises, and chuckles and continues working.

At the end of the day, Dave shares his frustration with his wife about what happened at the office on their way to dinner. He loses track of his speed and get's pulled over. When the officer approaches, Dave lowers his window and greets the Officer "Hello Officer McDougal", and the Officer responds "Do You know why I pulled you Over?" Dave responds "No Sir". The officer responds "You were speeding", then Dave's wife chimes in, "He wasn't really going that fast", and the Officer responds, "Shut up Whore. I wasn't talking to you", Dave turns to the Officer and says "Okay, watch it buddy, there's no call to talk to my wife like that." The Officer responds "License, Registration, Insurance, and Give Me Your Keys". Dave gives the Officer his License, Registration, and Insurance but refuses to hand over his keys because he believes that to be an unreasonable request. The Officer writes Dave a ticket and then he and his wife are on their way to dinner. During dinner Dave decided he was going to email Tiffany and tell her not to come to the office tomorrow until after 10am so that he has time to prepare her official warning and they can go over it and put it in her personnel file, but he inadvertantly sends the email to Derek by mistake.

The next day, Dave arrives to the office and is appalled to see Derek standing at Tiffany's desk with a gun pointed at her. Puzzled by what's going on, Dave asks - "What's going on? Why do you have a gun pointed at Tiffany? Derek responds, "I got your email and I've already had 2 warnings put in my file so this one is gonna be the final straw and I can't afford to lose this job and it's Tiffany that keeps messing up the recycling". Dave worriedly responds "There's been a mistake. I meant that email for Tiffany. I'm calling the cops." Dave dials 911, but the Operator says that cops can't come immediately because they are already on another call". Daves tells them to hurry because someone has a gun at the office and is pointing it at another employee.

Daves is comforted to hear the sounds of Police sirens approaching when all of a sudden, "Bang", the gun goes of and Tiffany is shot.

At the Bar:

As Wilbur and Dave continue discussing their weeks Dave realises that the reason the cops were tardy is because they were at Wilbur's Office escorting Loretta off the premises. Dave says to Wilbur, the Police could have arrived in time to save Tiffany's life if it were not for the fact that they were wasting time at your office for escorting someone off the premises for something so minor. Wilbur responds "I'm the Boss and nothing is as important as me receiving my due respect.

Bottom Line:

There are Daves and Wilburs in the world and they simply aren't going to see eye to eye on just what is reasonable behaviour and what is not reasonable behaviour. It is what it is.

Again this aint kiddy school anymore. these kids PAY for these services. This idea that the teacher owns the classroom is actually ridiculous to paying customers. now should their be some decorem? sure. put all rules on the wall and in the syllabus, make them sign off on said rules ' NO fit on THE DESK' , not "No Feet on MY desk". Because you mrs and mr professor dont own ish around here. This aint YOUR school. You teach here thanks to the paying students aka customers.

I still don't think a paying student has cause to do whatever they want, because feet may be harmless, but other things under that premise may actually be annoying to the other paying students or disruptive to the teacher (in the desk case, it was per that teacher, but I digress). incorrect.

i admitted you do need some sort of classroom decorum and that better be on the syllabus and stuck on a big sign on the wall.
just like "no shirt, no shoes, no service" there's no difference.
BUt after that, you treat the students as they should be treated, like paying customers. one of the major issues with education i see in general especially at the collegiate level is the lack of customer service all the way around. in the classroom, in the admissions offices, etc. They treat these students like they are snotty nosed kids. they are not kids for one. most of them are 18 or older. therefore they are ADULTS. sure Young...Adults, but still Adults. Treat them like paying adults. that will also help them grow up faster and act more like adults.
