LeBron vs. Wade… They played each other 30 times heading into this game, tied 15-15. The outcome of this game and the tiebreaker between Wade and LeBron would come down to the final seconds.

The Lakers came out flat tonight. And they would nearly nickel and dimed themselves to death, missing point-blank layups or over passing on what looked like sure layups and throwing it away. Despite that, they held the turnovers down to 12 and limited the freethrows to 13 for the Heat. When they do that, they are tough to beat.

Both Kuzma and LeBron led the Lakers as a one-two scoring punch. Kuzma with 33, LeBron with 28 and a rebound shy of a triple-double. In the end, it was LeBron hitting a couple freethrows against Wade and then forcing Wade into a tough three to lose the game. And it was LeBron who would come away with the 1-game edge over his buddy as the Lakers took the W, 108-105.

The Heat have been feisty of late, winning 4 of their last 5 coming into the game.

“That’s another win we got tonight that we wouldn’t have had earlier in the season,” Luke said, seeing progress from his team as they defended home court.

LeBron -- -- He and DWade on the final possession, one on one and LeBron smothered him to force a long fading three brick to get the win. A lot of talking from LeBron in this game to Wade, but also other Heat, even at the FT line where they might have been giving him some grief. He struggled tonight, but made two huge ones with 22 seconds left. Some very nice post sequences, again working that left wing side of the floor on iso for dunks. The work with Lonzo on screens also freed him up for scores. After the game, he and Wade swapped jerseys. “It’s bitter sweet, man,” LeBron said. “Every possession, was like the next one is getting closer and closer to the last one. A lot of emotions going on right now for me just knowing I’m losing a brother in this game I’ve had so many wars with.” Wade looked a little emotional afterward: “The friendship that we have, you know that goes beyond basketball. I’m going to miss this. I’m going to miss the (bleep) out of this.” LeBron had 9 points and 7 assists in the first half on his way to triple-double pace, but would end up one rebound short tonight. He and Kuzma were a strong one-two punch tonight. The Stats: He scored 28 points on 10-19 shooting (4-7 from three, 4-8 from the line) to go with 9 boards, 12 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 38 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He lobbed to McGee for a layup. He missed a hook off glass. Long out let to Lonzo ahead of the pack who scored the layup. He grabbed a blocked shot, pushed it out with speed, nice touch on the finish and he scored the And-1, he missed the FT. He no-looked a pass to Chandler cutting for the uncontested dunk. He sank a wing jumper behind a screen. He iso’d, spun against the pressure and hammered down an uncontested dunk. He attacked the paint and was blocked. He missed an up-and-under. He overplayed on the perimeter and we gave up an And-1. He kicked out to KCP for a three. He no-looked a pass out of bounds. He posted up, spun baseline and threw down the And-1 dunk, he made the FT. Second Half: He got bumped on the perimeter, stepped back off it and hit the three. A couple wild passes on the break, easy score the other way on the eventual turnover. He missed a wing three short. He posted up and swished the corner turnaround. Half court lob pass to Zo on the break who threw it down (TV never had him in the screen, so you were tracking McGee on the break until the last second). He sank a deep three straight away and stood three a couple beats. Not close on a turnaround in the post. He missed a deep wing three. He attacked, spun and drew FTs at the rim, he missed both. He attacked left and hit the side of the board on a fade (had Kuzma on the kickout). He sank a wing three on a kickout. He battled for a board and fired it off the Heat to get the stop. He attacked off a Lonzo screen and threw down a soaring dunk between defenders. He attacked and kicked to Kuzma for a three. He drained a deep three and wanted the foul. He missed a three. He hit Kuzma on the UCLA cut for the layup. He attacked strong to his left and drew FTs at the rim, he made one (while talking to someone on the Heat). He missed a tough fade on iso. He was hacked on a long rebound on the sideline on D. Up 1, he was fouled with 22.5 left, he made both FTs.

Ball -- -- An up and down game from Lonzo. Kind of game that could drive you a little crazy. He had a Shaqtin’ moment in the first quarter, missing an uncontested layup where he didn’t even hit rim. Hard to believe. He ended up with a 1-5 first half. Those usually result in 1-X complete games. But he picked up the energy in the second half and he had a couple of throwdowns at the rim and another big three. His screening in this game was strong, freeing up LeBron for a big dunk, a three and then Kuzma for a key score off the UCLA cut. Got to be careful with the cute stuff. Some wasted possession by the Lakers and Lonzo was in on those along with LeBron and Stephenson tonight. Defensively, he was really flat in the first half. He was letting guys get middle on him too easily early on. He seemed late to react when they started cutting to take a handoff. Once his energy picked up on that end, the Lakers did a lot better. Always like seeing that combination of blocks and steals in it. He’s got to maintain that high motor and activity if he wants to be more consistent. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 4-11 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards (4 offensive), 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 37 minutes. He was a +18. The Action: He was stripped on a drive. He kicked to Hart for a sideline three. He choked an uncontested layup on an outlet from LeBron, wow, really? He got back cut for a layup. He took another outlet ahead of the pack and this time finished the layup. He attacked with speed off a made FT and hit Hart for three. He missed a wing three over the zone. He attacked the paint and kicked out to KCP for three. Quick attack from the corner and he missed the layup, but drew the foul, he made one FT. He blocked Dragic’s three attempt at the end of the half. Second Half: He attacked, stopped, spun and then decided to try to bank, nope. He threw down a half-court lob pass from LeBron on the break. He slapped a ball loose on one end and took the pass on the other for the dunk. Ahead of the pack and threw it away behind his back instead of trying to finish the layup, killing me. He drained a two-for-one three. He missed a near sensational putback throwdown, that was a tough one, but nearly went. He kicked to LeBron for a three. Great screen to free up LeBron for the dunk. Excellent cut to take a pass from LeBron, then he no-looked to Stephenson for FTs. He missed a wing three with 1:22 left. He blocked a drive out of bounds.

Kuzma -- -- Before we get to the write-up on Kuzma’s game, one thing I was really looking forward to all last year if we were to get LeBron is seeing our young guys in the playoffs. I just want to see how they compete and how the experience helps their game. Think about who you were wanting to see get the ball down the stretch in this game when the pressure was on. LeBron, sure, but also Kuzma. “I’m just really confident right now,” Kuzma said of why he’s been on a roll. It’s that confidence, though, that cuts through the pressure. If he can go on a deep run in the playoffs, that’s just going to help build that foundation of confidence. “One of my favorite things about him is his competitive spirit,” Luke said. He said after this one that his three point shot coming back has helped a lot. You saw it as soon as that three ball returned several games back. He suddenly looked like himself. His game just exploded off that. He had 16 points on 8-11 shooting in the half. He was hitting runners, dunks in transition and sinking threes. Late in the game, we ran that UCLA cut for Kuzma with 2:35 left and he scored a layup off it. We had a couple variations of that they are still working on that will maybe make it a little tougher to cover. They picked a good time to run it tonight, though. Defensively, Luke said that Kuzma went under a screen earlier in the game and got burned and quickly looked over to the bench to take responsibility for it. We gave up a little too much room to three shooters when we needed to make them uncomfortable. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 14-22 shooting (3-7 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 1 assist and 3 turnovers in 40 minutes. He was a +16. The Action: He took his eyes off the ball and fumbled it out of bounds. He curled into the paint and hit a runner. He fumbled the ball away as he tried to make a pass. His man reached, Kuzma controlled it, spun away and hit the runner. He attacked off the three line and hit the runner. He cut to the middle of the paint, took the pass, faked one way and jumphooked the other. He attacked and was stripped, hit in the eye with no call. He took a pass on a cut, up-faked, went up and under and scored. Off the mark on a pull-up three on iso. He attacked from the wing when the help cleared out to follow the big setting a screen for LeBron and he powered in a layup over a defender. He sank a one-footed, Nash-like jumper from the elbow. He missed a jumphook over a smaller man. He dunked a few seconds later when KCP stole the outlet and found him cutting. Awful cross-court pass and it was stolen. Second Half: He sank a wing three off the behind-the-back pass from LeBron. He missed a one-footed step-back from about 16 feet out, clock was a little low. He spun to the middle and was fouled on a hook, he made both FTs. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He attacked from the three line, took contact and scored the layup anyway. He missed a short one. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. Putback score on a miss against the zone. He sank a wing three on the LeBron kickout. He missed a corner three. He scored a layup off the UCLA cut.

McGee -- -- He missed a bunch of chippies in this game. Between him and Ball, they must have given away 8-10 points. We went without our bigs quite a bit in this game. McGee got his 4 blocks in just 15 minutes. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-7 shooting (2-4 from the line) to go with 8 boards, 4 blocks, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 15 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He fumbled a pass out of bounds. He scored a layup on the lob from LeBron, who got middle. He choked a layup, got it back missed and dove out of bounds trying to save it, but didn’t. He grabbed a lob, came down and choked another layup, oiy. He gathered a lob pass and fouled as he tried to go up, he made one FT. He erased a layup to ignite the break. He missed a runner. His jumphook was blocked. His kickout was picked off. Second Half: He missed an elbow jumper. He blocked a layup. He drew FTs in transition when LeBron found him, he made one.

Hart -- -- You could see Hart talking to Wade on the floor and gave Wade a few pats on the back. “That’s my role model, my favorite player growing up,” Hart said of Wade. He got Wade’s shoes afterward. Wade said Hart’s game reminded him a bit of his. They do both go strong to the rim. Now if Hart could just get the whistles. Defensively, he got broken down a few times. The ones that irk me a little more than the others are losing your man while you watch the ball. Some time again for Hart at the PF lately with Beasley out. If the Lakers do make an Ariza trade, I wonder if Luke mixes that up. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-9 shooting (2-5 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 1 block, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +8. The Action: He sank a sideline three. He blocked a shot in the paint. He was fouled on a drive and made one FT. Pressure D at midcourt forced a turnover. He attacked the paint and was blocked at the rim. He trailed the break and Svi found him for the layup. He missed a wing three over the zone. He sank a three on a kickout. He let his man go right around him for a layup. Second Half: He fired and airballed a three. He attacked, spun and missed. He missed a corner three. He attacked the paint and wasn’t close on the finish. He lost his man to give up a layup on a cut, ball watched and got burned.

Chandler -- -- He was a bit slow-footed at times with some of the speedier lineups the Heat had out there. Ultimately, he did his thing and was hustling late to tap out boards and help gain possessions. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 2-3 shooting to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -15. The Action: He took the no-looker from LeBron in transition and dunked. He took a pass under the hoop, missed, got it back and scored. Second Half: He kicked out to Kuzma for a three.

Stephenson -- -- Some extra run for him in the fourth as we went small with LeBron and Kuzma as our two bigs. I think Luke might have liked his ability to get penetration and probably trusted him a bit more than Svi. He attacked for a couple of layups in the game and drew FTs on a throwdown attempt. Should have had another layup, but for some reason didn’t try to finish the layup, opting for the turnover on the pass instead. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 3 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He attacked and found Chandler, who missed, then scored. He missed a sideline three. He attacked and kicked to Svi for three. Second Half: He overpassed on a layup and threw it away to erase a highlight feed from Lonzo. He attacked the paint, hung and scored off the glass. He attacked from the wing, spun and scored the layup. He attacked and threw it away. He cut down the lane and Lonzo hit him for FTs on a throwdown attempt, he made both.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Rumors swirling about KCP’s departure. He fits well with this team, but isn’t going to be a starter on the squad. Thinking about the Ariza/KCP exchange in the lineup, I think this game would have benefited more from Ariza. His length and steadier team defense would have helped more. I wasn’t thrilled with KCP’s defense in this game. Luke got irked with him for arguing with the ref and not matching up on D. He had several possessions where he got broke down. Wade probably made him look the most foolish with a crossover that had KCP going one way and old man Wade the other. He did have a nice backcourt steal to set Kuzma up for a dunk. He’s been good in the passing lanes like that. But when we need to switch, get rebounds and box out bigger players, that’s not KCP’s strength and Ariza should help there. Additionally, our struggles with some of the bigger guards will be limited. With our drop coverages, Ariza’s length coming over the top of screens should also be more effective. KCP is a bit more productive scoring-wise per 36. Ultimately, KCP will not be coming back. He’s young and looking for a contract. We’re looking for a big name and KCP is a one-year, expiring deal to fill the space until then. We probably have a better chance of keeping Ariza next season on a small deal and having some continuity, but both are likely gone. As he has gotten better over the course of the season, KCP’s minutes have improved, but ultimately it’s not the featured role he might be looking for and that’s something we may have agreed to help Klutch with when we signed KCP. It will be interesting to see where the trade actions goes and where KCP may end up. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (3-7 from three) to go with 2 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal and no fouls in 24 minutes. He was a -14. The Action: He missed a corner three in early offense (I think he wanted a foul). He missed a 17-footer coming off a screen. He missed a baseline jumper. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He sank a corner three on a kickout. He missed a corner three. He swiped the ball in the backcourt, attacked and fed Kuzma cutting for the dunk. He changed directions at the three line and scored a layup on the drive. Second Half: Touch pass to Zo in transition for a dunk. Soft touch on the rim and he got a three to drop. He lost his man and gave up a layup under the hoop. He missed a corner three but got it back. He got crossed over badly. He attacked the paint and was stripped or blocked. He missed a corner three.

Mykhailiuk -- -- He had some moments in the first half sinking a corner three and then jumping a passing lane for a steal and breakaway to set up a teammate. The lineups he was in, however, were generally small and getting abused for easy scores. This one will hurt his +/- for the season. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 1 board, 1 assist, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 12 minutes. He was a -18. The Action: He missed a step-back 21-footer. He missed a wing three. He took the corner kickout and swished a three. He jumped a passing lane, swiped the kickout, pushed it out, changed directions, then fed back to Hart for the layup. He stepped on the line on a drive from the corner. Second Half: He missed a pull-up 18-footer. XXX

Walton -- -- Low energy from the team tonight for stretches… Timeout midway through the quarter, Lakers up 3… Chandler in for McGee up 4… Up 8 when Svi and KCP entered for Hart and Lonzo… Up 6 when LeBron and Kuzma sat for Hart and Stephenson with 45 seconds left… The Lakers led 27-23 after the first quarter… Chandler, Hart, Stephenson, Svi, KCP lineup… Timeout down 3. Small ball lineup getting easily picked apart. They’d be better off running Wagner… McGee and Lonzo in for KCP and Chandler… Kuzma and LeBron in for McGee and Stephenson, Lakers down 4… Hart out for KCP, Lakers down 7… Lakers having trouble with the zone… Chandler in… Chandler, Kuzma, LeBron, KCP, Lonzo lineup to close the half… The Lakers trailed 58-55 at the half. Heat bench had 36 points… Down 1, Luke called a timeout. Team is looking sluggish and can’t get into transition… Energy picking up for the Lakers and the Heat called a timeout with the Lakers up 4… KCP and Chandler in for Hart and McGee… Stephenson in for LeBron, Lakers up 3… Lakers killing me with the hotdog pass turnovers instead of finishing layups… The Lakers led 84-83 heading into the fourth… He went with a Chandler, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Svi lineup… He brought in Kuzma and LeBron with 9:20 left for Chandler and Svi down 2… Zo in for KCP… A 13-2 run by the Lakers to lead by 5 with 3:55 left… Chandler in for Stephenson out of that… Lakers up 3 with 22 seconds left, Heat timeout. He sat Chandler for KCP…

Thanks DB! I was a bit wary of how well Miami has been playing lately; not a perfect game by any means but a close one that went down to the wire. Good win all said and done.

SO glad we have Kuz on this team right now alongside LeBron.

Excellent write-up as always.

Kuz was amazing tonight, especially in crunch time. I don't think any player has improved more since Game 1 of this season. So fun to watch.

Thanks DB!

Bench scoring and defense really sucked. Heat bench outscored Lakers bench 68-24. But with Rondo, Ingram and Beasley out you have to expect some drop off.

First time this season going small worked in the Lakers favor.

Ball drove me crazy with the missed layups. You are an NBA professional. Missing open layups should not happen.

Kuzma was huge for us on both ends. Led the team in scoring allowing Lebron to not have to shoulder the load so much. I hope that continues.

If it’s within 8 points with 5 min or so left in the game, Lebron is the great equalizer where he ignites a run. In the games the Lakers are trailing in crunch time, this has been the pattern.

It would be nice if we did not have to depend on it quite as much, but the team is getting better at clearly defined roles and contributions: Kuzma as 2nd option, Hart knocking down crunch time shots, etc.

Besides Zo missing a layup in the first, I think Lance's goofiness ( like passing up a layup and robbing zo of an assist) was starting to rub off on Zo (next play zo tried that weird, behind the back while mid-layup pass to no one) I saw for the first time, why coaches wouldn't want certain players (beasley, stephenson, ) around young, impressionable players.
Thanks DB.

Thanks DB! Without BI or Rondo, all we can hope for is more ugly wins such as this. We miss their production as well as having to live with the lack of production by their replacements. With Lebron, and now Kuz, we have been able to withstand late game challenges and come out successful. Hope that continues.

What about signing Wade to a Vet's minimum contact next year?

He could be a great bench guy and show the other potential Superstars that James is not TOXIC....!
