https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/10-decisions-nba-teams-already-regret-from-the-markelle-fultz-draft-trade-to-lakers-whiffing-on-paul-george/

Quote:
I know the Lakers are high on their young guys, and that they likely would've had to give up either Lonzo Ball or Brandon Ingram, or both, to get George. I also know the chances of either Ingram or Ball becoming anywhere near the player George is are slim, and in the meantime, the Lakers would be a no-doubt title contender right now with George next to LeBron James and still a solid core of young and veteran players around them.

By trading for George, the Lakers would also have acquired his Bird rights, meaning the money they would've paid him this summer wouldn't have restricted them from signing James -- and they would also still be able to clear enough money to sign a third star next summer. You can talk all you want about guarding your assets to protect your future, but let's be honest: When you sign LeBron, in his 16th season, your future is right now.

My guess is if the Lakers were offered George for Ingram and Ball tomorrow, they would absolutely pull the trigger. So it stands to reason they should've done it the first time around.

Now, if hoarding all these young assets, and in doing so passing up a chance at George and Kawhi Leonard, ends up landing the Lakers Anthony Davis in a mega trade, then fine; it was worth it. But until then, if Davis becomes available, the Celtics have a much better trade package to offer anyway should they decide to go all in -- meaning Davis would have to wait two years to come to L.A. as a free agent, which would be LeBron's 18th season. The Lakers have George in their hand and would be gunning for a title RIGHT NOW.

Would LeBron have come?
Would PG have re-signed here?
Eh, no regrets.

Yeah I’m sure they regret it now of course, but that was a steep price at the time considering that we thought George was a lock to come here in free agency.

Lebron plus Paul George plus kawhi/kd/AD. I mean that’s pretty much unbeatable as can get.

We don't even know what it would have taken or if Pacers would have done it at all. Reports were that the Pacers did not want to honor his request and trade him here. So that put the Lakers in the position of overpaying at the time to even have a chance at Pacers wanting to deal with us.

You know how small market teams feel about the Lakers. Spurs did not want to trade Kawhi here either. It is going to be a problem once Anthony Davis requests a trade as well. Teams have no problem dealing players to the Celtics who have the most championships in NBA history. When it comes to the Lakers they get all pissy. They love cashing our huge revenue sharing check every year though.

George's loss. He'll always regret it. Lakers just move on and and keep striving for Chip 17. Have fun in OKC.

How is it far better and not even close? Talk about hyperbole. He's having a career year, but we have a resume to look at that says he won't sustain it. Great 3 pt shooter, but not an efficient two pt player. Four dimes a game is an improvement for a career of tunnel vision. He ain't the guy to lose a crop of kids for.

Not signing him in free agency really set us back a year. We could have been contenders this year. Imagine if Mozdeng had never happened and we had:

Ball
Russell
George
LeBron
Randle/McGee

Sixth man: Kuzma

I think either george or lebron didn't want to play with the other, and lebron deciding he was coming here a year ago meant no george. I think he did initially want to come here.

but that's just my headcanon so who knows

That poster would be the lone guy at a Lakers championship parade booing LBJ.

It was all in PG13's court.

He talked for years about being a Laker.

So when he was a FREE AGENT and had the choice to make his years-long dream come true he didn't even meet with Magic b/c he was scared that he would be convinced to join the team that he was openly dreaming about joining.

Talk about having issues.

Just another click article.

It will soon be found out the real reason is the Lakers have someone else coming in 2019.

PG is playing really well this season, like his best. Hmm wonder if he is trying to prove something...

And cowardice.

Out of respect, tell the man face to face that you have a good thing going in OKC and want to finish it.

To not even meet with him, says a lot about PG.

Exactly. That's not how you do business.

Water under the bridge. Interesting that this article was written right before they play us on Wednesday. Trying to stir things up. I expect the Staples crowd to give him heavy dose of boos.

I expect them to win as they have PG and WB, but yeah, what could have been.

Oh I want the Lakers of course to win.

But PG/WB coming back to LA to disprove naysayers all with the top (or close to) defense in the NBA?

This is as useless as saying do the Lakers regret trading away Lou Williams? Or do the Lakers regret not resigning Lopez? Do the Lakers regret drafting DLo instead of Porzingis? What's the point of bringing it up? It's not gonna bring PG here. It's not gonna change anything. This should belong in general discussion or something.

We do have a decent chance to win any game we play.
