Yeah, I'd rather him have solid D than to gamble for steals. _________________ I'm like a Hadouken, down-right Fierce! |

this team can use the steals.. we need some easy baskets/FTs off of them..
but at the same time, the steals can't come from gambles. |

He can get away with this vs bad teams with no go-to SG... _________________ "My thirst for domination is fed only by the game. I refuse to get distracted by outside forces." - Kobe Bryant |

I am not at all impressed with this stats.
Like some have posted, I also think that Kobe is gambling way too much and would prefer more solid D. In fact, I don't think Kobe is playing good defense the last month or so (up to the Kobe's standard of defense, that is). |

I think he watched the 1991 ASG this weekend and decided to play more Jordan-like in terms of team defense. _________________ "It’s like going to the Getty and standing in front of Van Gogh’s Irises while some schmuck next to you critiques individual brush strokes. Gambling is part of defense, and he's picking his spots, so it's okay. His man-d is still the same; it's just that now he's disrupting things a lot more. 5 steals is 5 extra possessions-which is always good. Kobe can never do right with some people. _________________ "In essence, the trade was: Shaq, Rick Fox and Gary Payton for Odom, Kwame, Mihm, Profit, 2nd round picks, a 1st round pick and 30 million in luxury tax saviings." - LakerJam

Well he did say his role on defense has changed, which leads me to believe he's just doing what Phils is asking of him.
He said his role in the past used to be like that of a "lockdown corner", where he'd cover his man and take him out of the game.
Then he said his role now is more of a "free safety", where he just reads the passing lanes. |

one thing i dont like in certain games such as this one, is when he's facing a player like dixon or blake who he feels he is already dominant over (which of course he is), he doesnt show much defensive effort. you see him excessively gamble, and sometimes not even bother to rotate or fight through a screen. these players end up getting easy looks and drives to the basket. i'd just like to see him play w/ relatively consistent defensive effort. he doesnt have to treat every player like its lebron, dwade or tmac, but he does have to recognize that any concession basket, whether its tmac or steve blake still counts for the same amount of points. |

Kobe, when he wants and the team mate permit , is one of the best defender in the league. IMHO |

Actually Kobe isn't gambling, he's getting most of his steals by simply playing great position defense and using his incredible court savvy defensively. It's great to watch, I thought he was going to go for another career low in steals this season (last year it was 1.3 or something, now it's closer to 1.8). _________________ Westside |

Geez guys what do you want from him on defense, blood?
Why would he stay glove on a scrub like Blake when he could disrupt passing lanes and double down on the real offensive threats. I think he has played good defense the last few games.
He is not going to be Bruce Bowen and chase his man around all night with kicks and karate chops. Pippen and MJ would play the same type of free roaming defense when the situation called for it. _________________ "I was laying myself on the line by saying, if this doesn't work in three to four years, if we're not back on the top then I will step down because that means I have failed,"

Have any of you play lock down defense for the duration of an entire game? Considering he takes the offensive burder (fighting thru doubles and triples), situational defense and picking his spots is fine with me. Lets not ask him to be a Bruce Bowen. Takes a lot out of you. Just a thought. |

^^^agreed.
as much as I don't like him gambling i'm not going to complain because he has to do so much for us already. a little less gambling and i'll be satisfied. _________________ "I wish I could draw a picture of the look on their faces..... Well, if his man D on Blake was so bad, how come Blake went 2 of 9 (1 of 3 3pg) and had 3 TOs? |

I guess you didn't see his man Jarret Jack single-handedly cut the lead from 17 to 8 within a span of about 4 possessions there last night, did you? |

That's only going to work vs good teams if the rotations tighten up. Because right now, they're u-g-l-y and they don't have no alibi.
In the Utah game, Kobe's man (Devin Brown and Milt Palacio for a stretch) was scoring from the weakside very easily. It was sad. |
