Preview: Lakers (25-21) at Rockets (25-19)

Lakers +7 o/u 225.5

For lengthy stretches on Wednesday, it appeared that Houston Rockets guard James Harden was alone on an island, scoring at will because the situation demanded it.

But even Harden could carry the short-handed Rockets only so far, especially when guard Eric Gordon, who returned from an eight-game injury hiatus only to depart with residual knee soreness, proved unfit to help Houston close the game.
D'Antoni must remain creative with his rotations as the Rockets (25-19) host the Los Angeles Lakers (25-21)

He utilized super-small lineups against the Nets, with the Rockets launching an NBA-record 70 3-pointers. Without center Clint Capela, who underwent surgery on Thursday to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, the Rockets lacked the inside heft to score consistently in the paint.

The alternative was that avalanche of deep shots.

"That's our reputation," Harden said. "That's the lineup we have. We got guys injured and banged up so ... we just got to figure lineups out. And (D'Antoni has) done a great job of it."

The Rockets were without Capela and played their 13th consecutive game without guard Chris Paul (hamstring). Starting forward Danuel House Jr. was unavailable after a contract dispute left him stranded with the G-League affiliate, and reserve forward James Ennis was also sidelined after injuring himself in a freak accident.

"We gotta do what we gotta do," D'Antoni said. "We go small because -- guess what? -- we gotta go small."

L.A. LAKERS @ HOUSTON Today's Officials January 19, 2019

Tony Brothers (#25) Tre Maddox (#73) Mitchell Ervin (#27)

REPLAY CENTER: John Goble, Lauren Holtkamp, Matt Myers, Zach Zarba

If We win this game we are only a half game from Houston and they have a game against the Sixers in Philly on Monday...

The Rockets may be really short handed in this game. They're already without CP3 and Capela, and they may be without Eric Gordon. It could be a great opportunity for us to steal another game and make up for losing to the Knicks and Cavs.

Key to this game will be hitting threes. Seems like as long as we are hitting our threes, we play with the belief that we can win. Even if we go down big.

Houston doesn't have Capela for this game ...so only Nene, who Zu shall feast on! If CP3 was playing, I'd hope Tyson sets one of his bone crushing picks on that weasel!

Curious to see how we defend Harden. The Bucks had a fairly novel approach where they forced Harden right all game long. Gotta keep the hands up and away since Harden will for sure do the swing through on any hands in his general vincinity. If the refs keep letting him get away with his double step back BS and he’s knocking them down, we will be in for a long, long night.

Zu ZU ZUUU! LOL.
So great to see him play with some agility (albeit he is a tad lumbering at times) and strength (throw it down!!) He catches the ball pretty well, runs the pick and roll well and has a soft touch. (Watching to see when he gets picked to shoot tech free throws.) Lately he has been fighting for rebounds with determination. He feels TALLER lately!!

I do not like Lance's game. As much as I do not like Carmello's game, I would not be adverse to making the trade "Lance for Carmello."

And: Am not going to be happy to see the young core traded for a 'superstar.'

I am more excited for this game then I was 72 hours ago, based on their most recent effort. Key word was effort. I might be getting my hopes up but I want Walton to play the same guys and see if they can give a similar effort tonight. If I am not mistaken with Clint out, aren't the Rockets relatively thin on bigs? If so, I would hope a combination of McGee/Zubac/Chandler could win a matchup against Nene/? but who knows with this team.

I want at some point if those fouls are piling up for Harden for a few plays make the fouls count, not necessarily flagrant in nature but make him feel it.

How many times will he shoot a 3 pointer and draw a foul in this game?

If this is really the Lakers game plan, then Luke is stupider than I thought:

Quote:
"If we can keep him [Harden] anything under 50, we feel like we've succeeded as a group," Walton said with a wry smile after shootaround Saturday morning. "If he scores over 50, then the game plan did not work."

You'd think that, right? Then watch the Lakers play the box-and-one defense they tried against John Wall against Harden.

D’Antoni said James Ennis will start for Houston. Sounds like they’ll play small with P.J. Tucker at center.
