1. Lakers: 157-323 (.327 winning percentage)

2. Knicks: 160-321 (.333)

3. Magic: 170-311 (.353)

4. Suns: 172-310 (.357)

That is all.

I think we've also managed to surpass the Knicks in terms of front office toxicity as well.

This covers Jim/Mitch through Magic/Rob.

Shows an organizational failure spread across two regimes now.

Lakers need divine intervention.

You know, I didn't want to be pessimistic from the start, but we should've seen the major red flag when Magic said "we're built to beat the Warriors" without making sure we're built to win at all first.

It is a combination of front office decisions and unprecedented run of injuries and bad luck. Jim/Mitch and Maginka deserve some blame but they're receiving a disproportionate amount of it imo.

The rebuild was coming regardless after the trade veto.

Dr. Buss put Jim in place and she had to let that play out for a bit out of respect for her dad, but I feel pretty comfortable blaming her everything since.

At least we have DLO balling out in Brooklyn, Julius putting up numbers in NO and Zubac starting for a playoff team to show for it.

But the 6 years is both FO's combined failure.

It's just sad any way you cut it.

Magic was and is my favorite Laker/athlete ever.

Considering the hole (filled of ill-conceived roster moves, coaching choices, future draft picks traded away, draft selections fumbled) that Jim Buss dug for the club (the first four years of the last six), is it any surprise that the Lakers are still struggling ?

No, it shouldn't be a surprise. Not to me.

It isn't easy to rebuild from scratch. If I recall correctly, the Sixers were the league laughingstock for better than a decade before stumbling into enough top five picks to rise towards contention in the East.

This season didn't produce the step ahead that most of us anticipated (perhaps even demanded) of the Lakers. Most of us thought that the seasoning of a few key young players next to an aging superstar spelled enough chance of success for a fringe, if ultimately suicidal, playoff berth.

As this season begins to close, I like where the franchise sits more than a year ago. That's not to say it's not a rosy picture: the prospect of recurring injuries among three key starters (James, Ingram, Ball) still hangs overhead. I think the goal of this off-season is to pick up another key person from the top twenty free agents and draft. It will put the Lakers in the mix again for a chance for another fringe playoff berth. One step at a time.

Isn't that crazy?

The reason why it's hard for the people at top is that they are still making record profits. People forget that yes, NBA teams are part of a competition, they are at the end of a day, a business.

And business remains good for the Lakers despite being the worst team of the past 6 years, and the Knicks at #2.

And ironically both teams stand to gain a max player and possibly a top draft pick.
