|
|
It should take some effort for an american journalist to piss off someone who lives at the other half of the planet, but I have to admit that Simers got it done.
T.J. Simers wrote: | My intention before the Lakers' game with Portland had been to talk to Lamar Odom and urge him to score more, but as soon as he saw the media enter the locker room, he decided to leave — moving to his left, of course, as he walked out.
So that left me with Brown, and when I asked him if he was bothered by all the criticism directed his way, he said, "I don't read the newspapers, so I don't see the criticism.
"I think I'm doing good. How do you think I'm doing?"
I didn't hesitate, of course. "Not very good," I said. "Not very good at all."
"What do you want?" Brown said.
"How about more consistency?" and as we continued, I found myself having a very nice conversation with the big stiff despite our obvious disagreement over whether he's any good. Who knew Kwame Brown would handle himself better than Brad Faxon?
I have two children older than Brown, who is 23, and I know how difficult it would be for a 23-year-old to stand up to the pressure of constantly being in the spotlight, and I thought about giving him a break. But then changed my mind.
"I think my defense has been consistent," he said, and I told him I wouldn't know, because I'm all about offense, and he said, "We have all the scoring we need from Kobe."
|
How can a press professional who cover sports admit he just ignores defense? On another note, Jackson made him look like a complete idiot.
T.J. Simers wrote: | IT SOUNDS like Jackson wants more aggressive play from Odom, so tongue-in-cheek I asked, "Have you come around and started thinking like me now — getting more points out of Lamar Odom?"
Jackson pondered that for a moment, and then said, "I hope I never have to think like you. For sure, my relationship [with Jeanie — I presume] would end quickly, I wouldn't have any friends and I'd be alone in this world." |

I think Simers is hilarious, and that most of what he writes is intentionally self-deprecating and tongue in cheek. _________________ "It’s like going to the Getty and standing in front of Van Gogh’s Irises while some schmuck next to you critiques individual brush strokes. I have to assume that Phil said that tongue in cheek too, and anytime someone gets to slap back at the media I am all for it. _________________ Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst. |

I have to admit that was funny! Bring in those pony riding
bananas for TJ!
If anybody sees TJ on the street though please smack him at least once for me! _________________ "According to ESPN.com's conference projections, the Lakers will finish 12th in the West, which prompted Bryant to tweet earlier this offseason, "12th I see.." |

Simers pokes, prods, agitates, and tries to rile up professioonal athletes in an effort to get real responses rather than cliches. And he's great at it. I like to hear his interaction, he's a mild type of "Stuttering John", not quite as offensive, but pretty abrasive. |

The problem with T.J. Simers is that he repeatedly takes center stage, always at the expense of the person he's interviewing. Most of us read articles to find something illuminating about the team, not T.J. I couldn't care less about his daughter's radio career, as he goes out of his way to promote her (and himself) with every pseudo-backhanded remark. |

For the last 16 years.
And to the poster inquiring as to how a sports writer could not understand the importance of defense, that unfortunately seems more like the rule than the exception. |

I believe he meant that as he's all about offending people - and it looks like he's successful once again. |

I said some people think Kobe shoots too much and needs help from his supporting cast, and Brown, who would score nine points and throw up an airball from the free-throw line in the 99-82 win over Portland, said, "When we win, it's because Kobe is having a good night." |
I don't like this answer. |

its a masterpiece as usual. Plus while the rest of the times was busy bashing them last year, he actually gave the lakers a fair shake, just like he's doing now. His style maybe "offensive" to some but if you read, really read what he writes, usually its spot on. |

It's a PUN. Yes, he was needling about his offensive game, but Simers is also "all about offending people" with his sarcasm/ satire.
The guy is strictly a stand-up act along the lines of Don Rickles.
sorry, notWorthy. I hadn't seen your post when I wrote this.

Simmers is hysterical if you don't take him too seriously.
The comment by Phil made me snort out loud . I can just imagine Phil giving him one of those cold long stares down his nose, waiting a couple beats and spitting that one out with a cold smile. Love it! |
