It's on ESPN.com

Steve Francis is headed to New York under a deal agreed to Wednesday by the Knicks and the Orlando Magic, ESPN.com has learned.

Steve Francis
Francis

The teams agreed to a trade of Francis for Penny Hardaway and Trevor Ariza, two league sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN.com.

The trade was expected to be announced later Wednesday afternoon after being called in to the league office.

In New York, Francis will be paired with Stephon Marbury as the highest-paid backcourt duo in the NBA.

The Knicks were still talking with several other clubs as team president Isiah Thomas worked at remaking a roster that has stumbled to the league's second-worst record, 15-37.

For the Magic, the trade will provide salary cap relief to a franchise that can now go further beneath the cap than any of the league's 30 teams in the summer of 2007 when a bumper crop of free agents will be on the market, giving Orlando several options in figuring out how to rebuild around 20-year-old power forward Dwight Howard.

I actually think that's a great deal for Orlando.

They didn't want Franchise anyways.

He's overpaid and has a terrible attitude.

He helped them fill seats, but now they have more cap room in 2007
than any other team and that summer still is loaded up with a good
number of solid UFAs.

Bad move for NYK if they're keeping Marbury.

Marbury + Francis is a terrible pairing.

So would have been Kobe + Francis, so hells yeah - glad we didn't go
after his over-dribbling a$$.

How long before Larry Brown resigns now? He's not going to be able to deal with those two guys in the backcourt. He and Marbury have already been at it all season.....

Ariza is not bad, but I thought they were trying to get Crawford too. This is quite a salary dump for Orlando.

The Knicks will right the ship. They have a GM who isn't afraid to pull the trigger. Now they have a proven and respected coach, which was the biggest missing piece for a while now. Furthermore, they have an owner who realizes the salary cap doesn't apply to teams who are in the bigger markets. Even with the Knicks team salary, they make money every year.

It's amazing Jerry Buss isn't willing to spend luxury tax dollars to get top players around Kobe, considering the Lakers franchise make more money than the Knicks franchise.

It sounds like Orlando is doing it for future financial flexibility. A backcourt of Marbury and Francis and only one basketball. It will be interesting to see how that backcourt tandem works together.

Larry Brown will now use Marbury as trade bait for another all star.

They have a GM who's done nothing but make terrible moves since the
day he was hired, in the shadow of the GM before him who did nothing
but the same.

It's nice for a team to be in such a big market that they can afford to go
over the cap without sitting on Mark Cuban money - but New York is
screwed on tons of its contracts and is still loaded with overpriced vets.

I don't know if you understand this whole "salary cap" concept, but there's
more to it than simply being over or under it.

When you're like the Knicks and load yourself top to bottom with all these
overpriced contracts, it makes future moves much more difficult not only
because your players are overpaid - but because you also then have to
match salaries closer in any deal.

NYK has one of the worst front-offices in recent memory.

I dunno what you're trippin' on man.
