Shaking Things Up… A series of thunderous dunks from Kuzma and one from LeBron all within a flash in the third quarter flipped momentum back in the Lakers favor.

They were lifeless out of the gates in the second half, losing their lead on an 11-1 Pelican run. Then the small ball Laker starting lineup fought back. Bam. Bam. Bam. Bam. That flurry propelled them back up by 8.

“We needed that. The energy kind of got sucked out of us,” Luke said.

The margin for error for the Lakers is extremely thin. Luke shook up his starting lineup, moving Rondo to PG and sitting McGee to go small.

While they got hurt in the paint, LeBron and Rondo kept the offense flowing cleaning, combining for 26 assists with just 4 turnovers. The Lakers team as a whole finished the night with just 8 turnovers.

The game would still come down to the final 30 seconds. As the clock wound down, LeBron found himself in the corner, turning and firing a one-footed three with just 1.9 left on the shotclock and up by only 3. Nothing but net.

“A big time shot by one of the all-time greats,” Luke said as the Lakers took the 125-119 win.

LeBron -- -- In trouble, with the shotclock down to 1.9, he turned and fired a one-footed corner three. He held his hand up as he half spun around after that, just knowing it was going down. Swish. The Lakers were up by 3. A miss there and the Pelicans could tie it up on the other end. “I’m pretty sure he called it,” Luke said. Steady start of the game with 14 points on 7-11 shooting and 8 assists with just 1 turnover (that was a key for the team as they had just 3 first half turnovers). Defensively, we worked it out, I guess, with the small ball. It helps AD only gets played 20 minutes and in general didn’t seem to be going all out. LeBron was a bit more engaged, but we will need some better challenges or taking charges to help protect the paint. Poor from the line tonight, got to hit those FTs. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 13-24 shooting (4-9 from three, 3-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 10 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 2 turnover sand 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +2. The Action: He hit BI down low for the easy post score. He tapped in a lob after Rondo’s man switched on him. He missed an open wing three on a kickout. He took the bounce pass through traffic and jammed over a defender. Bounce pass to BI under the hoop for the score. He lobbed to McGee out of a timeout for a dunk. He attacked and muscled in a layup. Dive into the paint to take contact from Julius and he banked in the And-1, he missed the FT. He attacked across the paint to his left and scored a layup. He missed a deep three. He missed a running, one-handed three at the buzzer. He muscled a layup through Julius, but gave it up on the other end not matching up with him. He threw a pass away in transition. He hit BI down low for the easy layup out of a timeout. He found Kuzma cutting for FTs. He saw the defense part in transition, he attacked and threw down a pumping dunk. He posted up and fed Kuzma cutting for a layup. He probed and missed a short one at the end of the half. Second Half: Not close on a sideline jumper to start the half. He sank a three in early offense on his next touch. He hit Ingram diving for the layup. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He sank a three off the Rondo kickout. He missed a layup in transition but Lance tipped it in. He was fouled on the perimeter for FTs, he made one. He missed a three straight away. He attacked across the paint and missed a fade. He missed a wing three. He posted up and couldn’t finish the short one. He was fouled in the paint on his next touch, he made just one FT. He missed a tough wing jumper when the offense stalled. He attacked right, hung on Randle and scored the tough And-1 before going down, he made the FT. Huge turnaround, one-footed corner three with 31 seconds left to just beat the shotclock. He was fouled with 28 seconds left, he missed both, uggh, didn’t make them pay for the intentional foul.

Kuzma -- -- Steady first half with 16 points on an efficient 6-9 shooting. In the third, he had three straight slams, posterizing his buddy Randle on the first and then afterward there were perhaps some business decisions made on the next two as the lane was open and Randle didn’t want to challenge one of those. That was a key flurry that sparked the team to life in the second half. “It got the building going again and our group going,” Luke said. Defensively, this is a tough matchup for us going with Kuz/LBJ combo. The team needed to provide them a little more support on the glass. They did scramble and help at times when the ball was in deep. But if Kuzma lost the position battle early, then he was toast. Lakers really need the guards cracking back and battling to help. The Stats: He scored 22 points on 9-15 shooting (0-3 from three, 4-6 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 34 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He missed a wing three on a kickout. He attacked, spun on AD and scored the layup. He blocked Julius’s dunk from behind. He swatted another shot in the paint. He rattled in a step-back 18-footer. Quick change of pace to draw a whistle for FTs, he made one. He took a kickout, attacked off a couple long steps and went bank with his left at a tough angle. He was blocked on a reverse in transition. Ill-advised bounce pass to Rondo, turnover. He couldn’t finish at the rim in transition. Nice bounce on the leaning floater in the paint. He cut across the lane and LeBron fed him for FTs, he made both. He posted up a smaller man and hit the jumphook. Quick cut and LeBron found him for the layup. He was fouled off the rim run for FTs. Second Half: Nice recognition on a pull-up jump pass to Rondo under the hoop for the layup. He missed a wing three. He missed a scoop around Davis. He attacked down the lane and flushed on the closing Randle. He took a pitch out from Rondo at the three line, attacked the paint and hammered. Another slam shortly later as we got a backcourt steal. He missed an open wing three. He fouled a three shooter with 2 minutes left after trying to recover on a poor close.

Ingram -- -- Another strong first half with 17 points on 6-11 shooting (5-6 from the line) and making it look easy around the rim. He was trouble anytime he got deep in the paint, which the Lakers were doing with consistency. The fouls caught up with him a bit in the second half, limiting his aggressiveness on both ends. Really liked seeing LeBron give the ball up to BI with 1:16 left in the game, letting him go to work in crunch time. BI came through with the layup. Random thing of the night, with the small ball Ingram took the jumpball tonight (didn’t win it). I’m pretty sure that was his first time doing that to open a game in the NBA. The Stats: He scored 23 points on 8-14 shooting (0-1 from three, 7-10 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 4 assists, 1 block and 5 fouls in 40 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a corner three in transition. Low position, he took the entry, spun and scored the easy layup. He cut and LeBron found him with the bounce pass for the dunk. He missed a pull-up from 18 feet. Nice cut off Rondo’s drive and he earned FTs off the bounce pass, he made both. He attacked the paint, spun and drew FTs at the rim, he made both. He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made one. He forced his man into a travel. He attacked off a handoff, slowed up and banked the easy one. He found Lance cutting for a layup. He missed a pull-up wing fade. Downhill off a rebound pushout and he scored a layup easily around the helpless D. He swatted a man from behind to get a stop at the rim. He didn’t hit rim on a turnaround in the post. He kicked out to Reggie for a three. He was blocked on a reverse, Rondo got it back and saved it to him for a dunk. Low position out of a timeout and LeBron hit him for the easy one. Second Half: He backed his man down, pump-faked and got tapped on the And-1 jumper, he made one FT. Dive from the weakside off LeBron’s post up and he scored a layup. Great outlet to McGee in transition for the reverse. He slowed it up instead of attacking in semi transition and was tied up. He up-faked, attacked the rim and drew FTs, he made one. Big make with 1:16 left, LeBron gave it up to him, BI attacked from the wing on iso and scored a layup.

Bullock -- -- Some big makes late in the game. He quietly worked his way to 14 points. He sank his usual couple of threes, but also had some curls into the paint off the dribble for scores at the rim. Good to see that mix in his game. He also had a leak out for a layup on the break, haven’t seen a lot of that, either. Defensively, some good switches and rotations. He’s definitely getting more comfortable out there. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 5-9 shooting (2-4 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 2 steals, 1 block and 1 foul in 36 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: Nice job changing ends off a jumpball and Rondo hit him in stride for the layup. He couldn’t finish an inbounds lob. He hit a short floater curling into the paint. He missed a 17-footer coming off a screen. He drained a sideline three off BI’s kickout. He missed a tech FT, uggh. Second Half: He curled into the paint off the handoff and scored a layup. He drilled a big three trailing the break to force a timeout. He missed a quick-fire corner three next time. He missed an open corner three. He was fouled with 13 seconds left, he made both FTs.

Rondo -- -- Into the starting lineup to deal with the pouting on the bench it seems. “We needed to do something different because it wasn’t working what was going on,” Luke said. They took McGee out so that you wouldn’t have too many non-shooters out there. Rondo did his part in the non-shooting early, making just 1-7 on mostly wide open jumpers. He was putting in a little more hustle and finding teammates, however. He and LeBron had 17 assists with just 2 turnovers in the first half. Huge difference from the recent turnover-prone games between those two. (Rondo was still a team-low -7 in the first half.) He kept the playmaking going and finally got the scoring going in the fourth quarter. An open three got him going there. Better, more controlled game with some focus out there tonight. The vets were getting called out and showed some life. Season high with the 16 assists tonight. “All starts with defense,” he said afterward. Very true. The lack of team turnovers also help that D some. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-15 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 7 boards, 16 assists, 2 steals, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 37 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed an open wing three. He got his man to switch and lobbed to LBJ for the easy one. He outlet down court to Bullock in stride for the layup. He slipped a bounce pass to LeBron for a dunk. He attacked the paint and found Ingram cutting for FTs. He missed a layup in early offense. Left open, he sank the 16-footer. He missed another open one from the same spot next time down. He missed a wide open three. Great double to swipe the ball from Randle. He missed an open sideline three. Nice hustle under the hoop to save a ball to Ingram for a dunk. He gave it back up on the other end with a layup for his man. Second Half: He scored a layup off the jump pass from Kuzma. He didn’t hit rim on a drive. He attacked and missed or lost the handle. Overpass in the paint, turnover. He hit Kuzma at the three line, who attacked for the dunk. He zipped a pass to LeBron on the break for a slam. He kicked to Lance for a corner three. He missed another drive. He faked a behind-the-back pass, then wrapped it around a defender for a LeBron three. He swiped a pass and pushed out the break to Lance for FTs. He spotted McGee under the hoop on the mismatch for an easy layup in early offense. Wide open, he finally made the open three. He probed off a screen next time down, scooped the ball up and hit the layup. He probed, missed the layup next time down but McGee cleaned it up. Next time down, he swished the pull-up midrange jumper. No D and he gave up a layup in transition.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- The lack of notes says it all. Low minutes and little overall impact. He made his only jumper, had a nice defensive challenge, but was reduced in role as we went with bigger minutes for Bullock. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 1 assist in 7 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: Nice challenge on his man to force a miss. He drew an illegal screen call fighting over the top to get a stop. Second Half: He sank a pull-up 20-footer.

McGee -- -- We decided to go small with our LeBron/Kuzma bigman combo. This failed earlier in the season, but the team D now is a bit more familiar with each other, which was always the problem with doing this early on in the season. Guys just needed to be in regular roles and getting used to each other before we went into experimentation mode. McGee quickly picked up three fouls after coming in late in the first, but not before we set him up with just as many dunks. In the fourth, he tried to make a between the legs pass that went right to the Pelicans and they took it for a score the other way. Yeah, Luke called the timeout and kicked a puppy. The Stats: He scored 10 points on 5-5 shooting to go with 4 boards, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He fumbled a pass away. He erased a layup on help D. He faked a screen, cut and threw down the lob on the ATO setup. He slipped a screen and threw down the lob from Lance (nice screen the screener sequence). Second Half: He was called for a travel not getting a good grip on a pass in the paint, it seemed. He kept an offensive board alive. Rim run got him in a mismatch with a guard, Rondo found him for the easy layup. He reversed deftly on the break off the long outlet from BI. Putback dunk on Rondo’s dribble penetration miss. Mustard off the hotdog on a between-the-legs bounce pass I think that led to an uncontested score the other way.

Hart -- -- He came in for Kuzma with 3 minutes left in the third. Ingram had four fouls and that may have changed the rotation a little. But this isn’t the first time now they brought him in the second half. He would take and miss his only three. Not much else out there. He matched up with Julius for a stretch and held his own. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-1 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 assist and 1 foul in 10 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He did not play in the first half. Second Half: He missed a three trailing the break.

Chandler -- -- Just 2 minutes and he scored a point getting fouled on the defensive glass. Lakers did fine with him out there, but Luke was committed to the small ball. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 1-2 shooting from the line in 2 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He was fouled on the defensive glass for FTs, he made one. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Stephenson -- -- He sprained a toe in the fourth quarter and we had to burn an early foul and a timeout. Not sure what that means for him. With Rondo in the starting lineup, Lance ran backup point. He was active and engaged. He got called for a few fouls that he didn’t agree with, but had good energy and was making solid decisions. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-8 shooting (1-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 4 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a +14. The Action: He lobbed to McGee slipping the screen (screen assist by LeBron). He missed a 17-footer when his man went under the screen. Strong cut off ball and Ingram found him under the hoop for the score. Way short on an elbow pull-up. Second Half: He hit Kuzma cutting for a dunk. He kicked to LeBron for a three. He swished a corner three on a kickout. He tipped in a layup hustling in transition. He attacked, took contact and missed the hanging layup. He was hit on a throwdown attempt in transition, he made both. He long missed a wing jumper on a kickout. He attacked in transition and was tied up.

Muscala -- -- A couple of blocks early on, showing some nice mobility to recover on AD on one and stay with a smaller player on the other. Good to see some life on that end. He missed both his three attempts. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 three shooting to go with 2 blocks and 1 foul in 5 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a wing three in transition. Wow, great recovery to block Davis under the hoop at the rim (that was a sure dunk). He denied a guard’s drive with another block. He missed a three straight away. Second Half: Nothing to report.

Walton -- -- The Lakers rolled out a small ball lineup against the AD/Randle duo, sliding Rondo back in the with the starters (seemingly so he would quit pouting)… McGee in with 4:33 left for BI, Lakers up 2… Lance and KCP in for Rondo and Bullock… BI back in for Kuzma with 2:47 left, Lakers up 1… McGee out with three fouls and three dunks for Chandler, Lakers up 1… Good close to the quarter getting to the line and making FTs, and the Lakers led 35-28 (Lakers 0-6 from three)… He started a Muscala, Kuzma, Ingram, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… Up 8, Bullock in for Stephenson after 4 minutes… LeBron in for Muscala, Lakers up 6… Kuzma out for Stephenson as the Lakers go super small up 4… The Lakers led 63-57 at the half, committing just 3 turnovers. That saved them from the 1-11 three shooting… They lost the lead to start the half, Rondo playing poorly again and the Lakers transition D, horrible… The Lakers were in the penalty after 4 minutes… Finally a timeout down 74-69 after 5 minutes. The Lakers gave up an 11-1 run during that stretch before Luke called the timeout… Stephenson in for Ingram who got his fourth foul midway through the third. Lakers down 2… KCP and McGee in for Rondo and Bullock, Lakers up 8… They led by just 1 when Rondo came back in with 55 seconds left. This is an awful lineup: McGee, Hart, Stephenson, KCP, Rondo… Luke got T’d up at the end of the third, being a bit too demonstrative on the sidelines, I guess, or for running that lineup… The Lakers led 95-92 heading into the fourth. He started a McGee, Ingram, Hart, Stephenson, Rondo lineup… Bullock in for Stephenson who cramped up… They pushed the lead to 7 and forced a timeout… Lakers went up by 12 as the 13-0 run continued… McGee trying to make a flashy pass led to an uncontested score the other way and the lead was cut to 6. Luke called a timeout to prevent the stupidity from spreading… LeBron, Kuzma, BI, Hart, Bullock out of that… Hart out for Rondo with 5:10 left, up 5… That unit would close… Down the stretch, we just let guys iso… Good job by the team protecting the ball all game…

Thanks DB.
On one hand, i think our small ball lineup found some traction.
On the other hand, if NOLA played AD in the 4th, this would have been another loss.

I thought Hart did a better job defending Randle than anyone else. He kept him from going to his left and Randle seemed reluctant to attack Hart (probably because he was afraid of getting an offensive foul). I wanted to see more of Hart in the game.

I mean, yeah, it's good to get a win, but 60+ games it's nothing to write home about. Still no sense of urgency from this team. And McGee went from one of the candidates for MIP to throwing between the legs passes in the paint. I'd send him to the G-League for that.

Still horrible defense, some of our guys (kmh, LeBron, khm) coasting far too much and still having trouble beating mediocre teams.

Yeah, he did his work early on Randle. Stayed tight on him even when he faced up.

Thanks DB

Great win and Kuz and BI starting to be consistently good.

Randle destroying us makes me made at Magic/Rob all over again. Mind blowing stupid decision not bringing him back. And like the Zu trade the excuse was really lame.

Can't wait to see Zo join the party

You are kidding yourself if you believe this team can make the playoffs, it's gonna take an epic collapse from Clips. Kings & maybe T-Wolves for this inconsistent bunch to play defense & beat anyone! They haven't encouraged any change of thought by barely beating a lowly lottery team.

Even when they win it's not convincing & I had hoped after all-star break they'd go 21 & 6 or something like that, but this team has failure written all over it from top of the organization to 12th man. Can't put together 2 straight wins or play 4 quarters of hustle intense basketball. 60 games in & very little has changed, if this were our jobs we'd be out of work looking for other employment...

I still want to keep BI, Kuz, LBJ, Bullock, Mo, Bonga but everyone else is expendable in summer which only leaves Ball & Hart basically. Don't give in a deal with the Pels anymore after they made a fool of us, don't give them young talent. Send Ball to the east coast if you can & I like Luke but this whole staff needs to go & new ideas are needed offensively & defensively. Wouldn't be opposed to Jay Wright if we can get him...

Also, stop reaching for past prime free agents like LBJ, Dwight, Nash, you'd think we woulda learned a lesson, if we somehow on earth get Leonard to talk with & prevent him from going to the opposite locker room we can turn into a winner. If not, 2 very good players might be willing, but I don't think the way our FO has put this bag of personalities together will convince the top 5 or 7 players to play in the once proud purple & gold (yellow)... I'm a Laker fan not a player fan for 50 years & it's pathetic & sad to see such lack of basketball effort from so-called pro's. Blame all around!

It was a sign of what could be the future, when everyone is healthy and playing well. Ingram has played much better the past few weeks, and Bullock seems like an upgrade over KCP/Hart. Miss Zubac, I think we would have 2-3 more wins if he was still on the Lakers.

A big free agency grab for a solid #1-2 guy, and keeping the youngsters will make us at the very least a solid playoff team next year.

Yeah we need to keep the young core intact no matter who we go after. We only have one year of lebron until he really starts breaking down.

I think Reggie Bullock needs to stay, perfect player next to Lebron. Hart also should stay despite him forgetting how to shoot, he's average on the perimeter but he's a good post defender for his size. We just need to add a center like Deandre Jordan imo, javale was good enough to start the season but i think DJ is just on another level than McGee.
