There are a few (easy) things Maginka can do to fix the Lakers this offseason:

1) Sign a max FA or spread that money around on quality role players.

2) Avoid one year rentals, crazies, non-shooters, and "tough-guys."

3) Draft the best player available at whatever spot we get.

4) Do NOT trade the pick under any circumstance if it's top 4. And in other circumstances, only trade the pick if we are clearly winning the trade.

5) Do NOT trade our young core (Zo/Kuz/Ingram) unless we are CLEARLY winning the trade.

6) Do NOT go for AD unless we can get him in exchange for a single member of our core. If we trade our pick plus a member of the core for him, we've failed.

7) Fire everyone top to bottom and find experts to staff our coaching, training, and analytics positions rather than big names, re-treads, or celebrity dieticians.

This plan accomplishes a a number of things, of which I'll only state a few:

1) It somewhat makes up for the DLO trade and letting Randle walk, since there's no way in hell we would have been this bad this year with them on the team. Whoever we draft this year is essentially going to have to fill their shoes/replace what they would have given us for the next decade.

2) It gives us a fighting chance next year no matter what. Since we're resting LeBron from here on out, he should have a great year next season. He's never had this much rest/time to recuperate before. This will probably be the last year he is in conversations regarding being the best in the league, so we should use it wisely. Signing a max FA (or quality roleplayers), retaining our young talent, and hopefully filling in the rest of the roster with pieces that fit should give us a puncher's chance against any team in the league.

3) Finally, having a top-10 pick on the team to pair with Zo, Kuz, and Ingram will ensure that we will have a life in the NBA after LeBron declines or leaves the team.

But the question is this: can Maginka pull anything like this off? Or are we doomed to seeing our pick and young players shipped off for AD, along with questionable FA signings that don't compliment LeBron at all? Will we pick another stupid re-tread coach who doesn't maximize LeBron, and who hurts our other player's development?

Whatever happens, this summer will be the true test for Maginka (and Jeanie). If they fail, they need to show themselves the door. So much of this situation is stacked in their favor, if only they would execute things properly. Maybe Kobe can get on the line with Rob and teach him how to do that.

Magic has handled things so bad we've reached a point where we could potentially not match last years win total.

So it's a resounding NO.

Excellent post... unfortunately you probably have nothing to do with front office decisions so none of this will happen.

Doesn't seem likely when I think about it, but I will have faith in them. Thats all we have now. It will be amazing if they pull it off. Imagine a top 3 dysfunctional being able to build a contender. Rest of the nba would be so mad. THat hope alone will keep my head up

I posted something pretty much along the same lines as this in the free agency thread. Short answer, no. Long answer - it's sad that everything is set up for them to build a great roster for next season, despite everything they've (bleep) up in the last year and a half and even if we strike out on the big names, but they're just so damn incapable that it's still hard to see them putting it all together. Really, all they need to do is not get cute because there are simple solutions available for most of our problems. Don't overpay for AD. Sign some shooters and the types of players that Lebron has thrived with in the past. Don't hire a retread or just for the sake of the guy's name or past relationship to the Lakers. Get someone who can show you a firm plan on how they hope to utilize the players we have on offense and defense, and a history of execution/development. Leadership skills are a bonus.

It's not exactly rocket science...

Yes I do, but I won’t be surprised if we fire Pelinka, SAS has said that Magic and Pelinka are having a lack of dialogue right now... so unless there on the same page we will get a new GM this summer.

There's a world in which they sign a 2nd max and then everyone's fist bumping and pounding their chests.

But bear in mind, they were doing that with LBJ too and look how it turned out.

The real challenge is not signing the 2nd max, but filling out the rest of the team once you do get that player. All their moves in that sense have let me doubtful and skeptical.

and what you're saying could easily get us a solid team that will never go anywhere but 6th in the west and get continuously knocked out in the first round for the next 4 to 5 years. that aint a good look either for a laker fan. for a portland fan, well thats what you're use to, for a bucks fan, great. So it may not be rocket science, but its a lot of luck especially when you have almost the entire league on hate mode anything a big name player comes up and a trade is in order.

a person like yourself per your own words would love a team with bron and a tobias harris level player. that would be great to you. until you realize that will never be enough to win anything of note. then once you realize thats the case, bron is too old to help, and now you have to flip tobias for someone lesser in hopes to do what? free up cap space. which is what we're doing right now. sitting on that space until that next superstar wants to come. it actually has little to do with our FO and more to do with these players of today and the new CBA where it makes guys want to say put because of the money difference for leaving. and the new era of player that is afraid of any real pressure. you see it with minnesota young guys, this is why butler was so mad at them. all that talent but you dont want that night in and night out pressure of having to perform and produce. and thats in a minny uniform. so you know darn well half the league is afraid of the lakers. kobe/shaq, gasol legacy, magic, worthy, kareem, etc. thats a lot of winning to live up to. This is why these guys would rather go anywhere else but here even to the clippers. there is ZERO pressure to win NOW. if things dont pan out, no one will be talking about "you aint no kobe, you aint no shaq, you aint no...insert laker great". NO one will be talking down on said players legacy. See this was always the case even when doc buss was here, BUT with all of this media coverage/social media. guys can hear every fan, hater, media guy, arm chair media guy talking about them in an instant.

So you were willing to pay IT real money after the hip surgery knowing his offense could be great but his defense was going to be horrific?

Hurt guys last year minus lebron=35 wins

Hurt guys this year with lebron= potentially less than 35 wins.

Again that's not an injury problem.

it turned out that we got HURT why do you keep acting like this isnt the main reason for the drop off?

If we get AD tonight for nothing. and AD and LBJ both missed 6 weeks, while Zo misses all this time, and BI, Kuz , rondo go down like they have. you do realize we will still suck because neither of the stars would not have been out there enough to make up for the loss of the other star and other hurt guys.
you can't say "look at what happened" as if the signing itself was a mistake. when guys are hurt being the the real issue.

wrong, it is an injury problem. the season aint over for one. for two these guys keep getting hurt. we havent stopped getting hurt. and bron aint playing with the same group as we had last year. if bron did play with the exact same group and we got hurt like we did last year, yes we would've won more games. but if we got hurt like we are right now. then we would look...like we do now. its not the amount of injuries in total. its How guys keep going out, coming back, going out, coming back.

It proves my point. When our guys got hurt, the 29m they spent on KCP/Rondo/Lance/Beez failed spectacularly.

I would have still signed LBJ 100/100 times. I would not have pursued any of the 4 guys they elected to spend 29m on. These guys and their inability to step up during injuries is why we're, in part, out of the playoffs again.

If the team is getting constantly injured every year (data says otherwise) regardless of who's on the roster, then's that on magic getting injury prone players or not improving the medical/training staff.

Put simply, if we had a 2nd max, say PG13, we'd expect him to step up and keep the team afloat if LBJ/Lonzo went down.

Well, KCP/Rondo/Lance/Beez = what PG13 would have cost and they didn't.

IT took a one-year, $2 million deal.....

Lou is carrying the clipps into the playoffs. Kuz and BI are barely just learning how to play with Lebron.

Randle is having a monster career year and proven to get better every year.

Book Lopez is having a career year in 3's

DLO is an allstar......

and you can see what happend to this team after we traded ZU....Lebron is playing center......

The reason we suck is because of injuries

The only way is if they sign a second max

or found a way to bring back Russell and Randle without losing anyone.

or didn't trade the young core away

I get the feeling that the 3rd option would be the best one to hope for actually happening.

Even then, a 2nd max doesn't save us if they have no clue how to build a winning team and culture. So we'll have to see.

But landing LeBron and then heading towards bottom 4 in the West is not a good sign.

Bron is a top 10 player. Just adding him should be more than enough to be better than last year's record regardless of injuries.

Either case is still a fault of magic.

If two different groups are having injuries then that's on magic not building the medical staff properly.

And the season is over as we're now placing lebron on min restrictions/no b2b.

I don't know if you can really make sweeping generalizations about keeping draft picks or not making trades "unless you are clearly winning." You have to evaluate each potential move based on the specific details of that move. (If we land a great free agent and the #4 pick, it might well make sense to move the pick for a player who can contribute now; if we don't land a great free agent, it might make more sense to keep the pick.)

And in reality, most moves involve risk. You try to minimize the risk as much as you can, but you rarely have moves that are no-brainers. It's pretty rare that a trade has a clear winner; and often the team that seemed to originally win the trade didn't in hindsight.

All we know for sure is Magic will be going after a superstar, either in free agency or a trade.

Other than that, who knows?

Whether restricting Lebron's minutes will make a difference next year is anyone's guess. If we get a lottery pick pick, it's anyone's guess if he will turn into a contributor or just get one of the many lottery guys who never amount to anything.

I've never been a fan of Magic's strategy, and don't have confidence in him as a GM. But he's running the show, so all we can do is wait and see.
