I've been in some pretty dynamic bait balls before and this situation has crossed the back of my mind. Pretty crazy it happened. Luckily the whale didn't like the taste.

At least the whale had an entire ocean to rinse the foul taste of human out of its mouth.

I wonder if it thought he tasted like chicken.

Crazy indeed. But as you say, anyone who has seen really bigs can see how this could happen if one were in the middle of it.

Bait balls are amazing. One of my favorite dynamics in nature to watch by far. I've seen many on fishing and boat trips and it's always exciting to watch. But to watch them from below the surface is the real treat. I've seen several while SCUBA diving and they are completely mesmerizing. I can spend an entire dive just watching one in action. Between the "murmuration" of the baitfish shoaling in a frenzied but coordinated fashion and the various predators darting in and out and herding the shoal, the sheer beauty of all the activity is stunning.

Also, got a unique perspective of the dynamic a couple of summers ago in San Francisco while up above the Golden Gate on the Marin Headlands. There was a large pod of humpbacks that had divided off about a half dozen very large bait balls. To see them circling around and blowing the column of air bubbles to keep the fish concentrated while they lunged up from underneath was really cool to see from that elevated position.

One time I was in a really cool ear acupuncture group session

No drugs for me at the time

I was going deep into nowhere
Was at full peace floating
In the Ocean
Below me far I could see a great white
Hmm
It stayed circling
I thought damn well if this how I go
I'll just become some different energy
Tried to chill as it approached
Ended before I was eaten
