Challenge Accepted… The Knicks lost eight-straight games and are well on their way to the worst record in Knicks history. This would be a hard one to lose.

Challenge Accepted. The Lakers got the Knicks confidence going in first quarter as they gave up 41 points – New York’s best quarter of the season.

The Lakers would get some better defenders in for the second quarter and reel the Knicks in. By halftime, they’d have a 3-point lead.

In the fourth, the game changed on Alex Caruso’s disruptive defensive effort. He was coming up with steals, blocks, deflections and drawing offensive fouls. The Lakers pulled out to an 11-point lead.

But the Lakers weren’t going down with a proper tank battle. The Knicks trimmed the game back to 1 with 37 seconds left. LeBron would iso and miss a long jumper. Want to make sure the Knicks get some points to close us? KCP stepped up to the plate with a dumb perimeter foul to give up the lead. And then LeBron would cap it off getting blocked on iso to lose the game 124-123.

Just 1 point in the final 3:45 of the game for the Lakers…and swept by the Knicks this season.

Don’t let that tankage tarnish the great effort by Caruso on D. He’s going to be bruised and battered after this one, drawing 4 charges, coming up with 5 steals and 3 blocks.

LeBron -- -- Man, really soft attempt to close this one out. He tried to finesse a score on the final possession, seemingly unsure what he wanted to do and was blocked as a result to lose the game. He had a strong first and his shooting looking decent early on, but it faded in the second half. He had 17 points on 5-8 shooting in the first half, getting into the post a bit and muscling/finessing his way for scores. He helped the Lakers recover from the horrid first quarter. Good job getting to the line with consistency early on, but that was a really poor close. He took the air out of the ball. Excellent job slamming the brakes on to pull off this tank. Sheesh. The Stats: He scored 33 points on 11-26 shooting (0-6 from three, 11-13 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 8 assists, 1 block, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He sank a face-up wing jumper on the first possession. He missed a three straight away. He got middle and lobbed to McGee out of a timeout. He sealed his man and hit the baseline jumper. He drew FTs attacking in transition, he made both. He missed a wing three. He posted up, muscled his way into the paint, up-faked a couple defenders and drew FTs, he made both. He no-looked a bounce pass to Williams for a dunk. He dunked in transition off the steal and feed by AC. He got speed into the offensive zone and drew FTs at the rim, he made one. He attacked across the lane and sank the fade. He was knocked over the fading the step-back three with no call and missed. He posted up and muscled his way to easy layup on single coverage. No box out and he gave up a putback dunk. He was fouled in the paint out of a timeout, he made both FTs. He threw a pass away. Second Half: He drew FTs to start his second half scoring. He missed an open wing three. He stripped the ball off his man to get a stop. He blew past his man for a layup. He was fouled in transition to prevent a score, he made one FT. He no-looked a bounce pass at a tough angle to Kuzma on the break for the dunk. He pulled the ball back out from the post and swished the baseline jumper. He missed a long fallaway baseline turnaround. He sank a pull-up in transition. He missed a wing three after looking for a possible lob to Caruso after he got that elbow. He missed a long wing jumper. He attacked in transition and missed, but Williams cleaned it up. He missed a turnaround at the top of the key trying to draw a foul. He missed a hook across the lane. He hit Williams down court for an And-1 dunk. Kickout to KCP for a three. He attacked from the wing and muscled in the And-1 (just too strong for Mario), he made the FT. He threw down a dunk with the crowd roaring in anticipation as there was no one in front of him in transition. He missed a turnaround fade. He fell asleep and his man cut for a layup. He was tied up in transition. He sank an 18-footer given space. He got tapped on a three. He attacked and wanted the goaltend. Awful play out of a timeout, LeBron iso for a missed wing jumper. He iso’d for the final possession, tried to hang for a short one and was blocked by Mario to lose.

Kuzma -- -- Really enjoying watching the passing game blossom for Kuzma. He’s had 18 assists in the past two games (Luke didn’t even bring him until 3 minutes left in the fourth quarter of this one, icing him well). I don’t think LeBron trusted him either when we parked Kuzma in the corner to space the floor (Kuz has missed his last 9 threes). But back to the good stuff. Kuzma has always seemed to a bit a bit of a reluctant passer. Now, he’s clearly taking enjoyment out of setting up teammates for scores. He’s actually valuing it versus it being an afterthought on any given play. He’s understanding how to manipulate the D to set up the pass versus manipulating the D to get a score. Really effective working the two-man game with a big. “I’m always super aggressive looking to score, but I need to use these games to develop myself,” Kuzma said of how he’s closing out the season. He said he’s now seeing how teams are playing him to shoot, so he’s trying to read that more. “And it’s fun,” he said of the passing. A lot of post-up action for him and LeBron. With the three-ball just not there for Kuzma, he’s going to the other parts of his game to score (post ups, floaters, transition). Defensively, really not much going on in this game, including rebounding. He didn’t pull down a board. The Stats: He scored 18 points on 8-14 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -17. The Action: He missed a wing jumper, short. Extra pass to McGee as he rolled down the lane and shoveled it to him for the dunk. He attacked and lost the ball. He attacked in transition and muscled in a layup through a couple defenders. He posted up and fed Caruso for a three. He swiped a pass, pushed it out and fed KCP for the And-1 layup. He posted up a smaller man and sank the turnaround in the middle of the lane. He posted up again next time down and hit the jumphook. He no-looked a lob to McGee for the dunk. He swished a 12-foot floater from the wing. He missed a floater. He hit Bullock for a wing three. Second Half: He worked the two-man game at the top of the key and lobbed to McGee for the dunk. He attacked left, spun back middle and hit the jumphook. Poor box out on Jordan to give up FTs. He attacked with speed and banked in a runner. He deflected a pass jumping the passing lane on the other end. He missed a baseline turnaround. He dunked off the great bounce pass from LeBron in transition. He either missed a floater or hit Williams perfectly for the And-1 (they did not give him the assist on this). He attacked the drop coverage off the screen and swished the floater. He popped out and missed a tough three. He curled into the paint, took the pass and drew FTs, he made both. He was called for a travel trying to work the post. He missed a three straight away (ninth straight miss from three).

Rondo -- -- A night and day difference with Caruso defensively versus Rondo. Ideally, you don’t have one of LeBron and Rondo on the court as much as possible. Luke is doing a little more of that with his rotations, but still starting Rondo is never going to be real successful. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-4 shooting (1-1 from three) to go with 5 boards, 5 assists, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He attacked a seam, drew the D and fed McGee for the dunk. He hit Bullock slipping a screen for a layup. He rattled in an open three at the top of the arc. He was blocked on a drive. Change of speed but he couldn’t finish the reverse in transition. Hockey assist to Kuzma filling a lane on the break. Second Half: He fed LeBron cutting in transition for FTs. He missed a layup off a probe.

McGee -- -- He had 10 points on 5-9 shooting in the first half and 6 boards. He seems to take the challenge with Jordan seriously. Luke favored Williams with the bulk of the minutes tonight, however. Very quiet second half for JaVale as we favored Williams down the stretch. I’m enjoying the chemistry with Kuzma and McGee the last couple of games. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 6-10 shooting (0-1 from the line) to go with 7 boards, 3 steals, 1 block, 2 turnover and 3 fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He dunked off the drive and dish from Rondo. He dunked off the lob from LeBron out of a timeout. He cleaned up a missed jumper with an And-1 putback, he missed the FT. He missed a turnaround in the paint. He deflected a pass. He dunked off the shovel pass from McGee. He threw an outlet away and it led to a three. He rejected a drive. He grabbed an offensive board and didn’t hit rim on a turnaround bank. He dunked off the drive and lob from Kuzma. Second Half: He couldn’t finish under the rim (again Kuzma looking for him). He dunked off the lob from Kuzma out of the two-man game.

Bullock -- -- Good first half with 10 points on 4-8 shooting. A little more midrange action for him in this game. Perhaps, they need to get him warmed up on those first. Or, it could just be that he (like everyone else) likes playing the Knicks this year. He’d sink a couple more in the second half, but wasn’t in the mix as the game went along. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-10 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 2 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -2. The Action: He didn’t hit rim on a wing three. He sank an open wing three in transition. He missed a corner jumper (and missed McGee open under the hoop). He slipped a screen and Rondo found him for the layup. He missed a wing three. He missed a leaning FT jumper. He sank a wing three. He sank a baseline jumper off an inbounds. Second Half: He sank a pull-up 15-footer to start the half. He sank a 19-footer coming off the screen to take the pass.

Hart -- -- Not thrilled with seeing Hart/Rondo as a perimeter defenders with Moe as the C. That’s asking for trouble with that combo. Well done, Luke. He’d straighten that out a bit later and the team did better with Hart on the floor. Offensively, Josh was clanking threes again, but had a couple of steals. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-5 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and no fouls in 19 minutes. He was a +9. The Action: He missed a wing three. He broke up a lob on help D. He attacked baseline and fed Moe cutting for the dunk. He gave up a straight-line layup. He missed a corner three. He filled a lane and muscled in a layup. Not close on a floater in the lane. Second Half: He fell on his but on a change of directions to give up a score. He didn’t hit rim on a three.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Unsung hero of the tank. He commit a dumb perimeter foul to give up the game-winning FTs. Klutch guys were clutch tonight. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-11 shooting (2-7 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 4 baords and 1 foul in 28 minutes. He was a +1. The Action: He missed a corner three but got it back. He missed a baseline pull-up. He sank a 21-footer coming off the pindown. He missed a wing three. He scored an And-1 layup filling the lane on the break, he made the FT. He missed a corner three. Second Half: He choked a layup. He sank a wing three on a kickout. He missed a wing three. He swished a wing three on a ball reversal. Really dumb perimeter foul with 22 seconds left up 1 to give up FTs.

Caruso -- -- AC is just balling out there on D. Steals, drawing offensive fouls, hustle plays for loose balls. You can tell LeBron is really appreciating the effort, too. Maybe that bodes well for when LeBron is GMing and deciding who we are bringing back. AC had a few breakdowns on D, but I think most of those were errors of being a little too aggressive with certain things. Which is fine because we just don’t have aggressive defenders on this team. That effort changes games and can be contagious. We saw him change the game a bit with that D in the fourth. He was just in the mix of everything. By the end of the game, my tally was he drew four offensive fouls on the Knicks. Throw that in the mix somewhere with the following stats to get a picture of that disruptiveness on D. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 3-6 shooting (1-1 from three, 5-6 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 2 assists, 5 steals, 3 blocks and 3 fouls. He was a +7. The Action: He swiped a pass and it led to a breakaway. He swiped a kickout and pushed out the break. He stripped his man on a drive to get a stop. He attacked and was blocked. He drew an offensive foul, drawing attention to an off-arm shove on a drive. He sank a three on a kickout from Kuzma. He got backdoored and had to foul. He gave up an And-1 reverse, getting fooled on a change of directions. Second Half: He grabbed the loose ball, attacked in transition and drew FTs, he made both. He attacked off the screen and scored a layup. Good hands under the hoop to strip a man. He missed a layup in transition. He stripped his man, then took a flagrant-1 elbow to the face as a result (great D, again, though). He made both the FTs out of that. He drew a charge off ball on a bigger man in transition. He got into the paint and fed Williams for the And-1 off the two-man game. He just missed a steal and it led to a score. He did get the steal next time down, jumping the passing lane to flag down the poor angle pass and he took it for a layup. Another pass deflection and this one led to a LeBron breakaway dunk. He drew another charge on help D, stepping in front of LeBron’s man. He drew FTs getting tripped while pushing the ball up court, he made one.

Williams -- -- He’s making the most of the Lakers tankathon stretch. If we were really competing, he wouldn’t be getting these minutes. He’s doing the little things with the hustle plays. He had 5 offensive boards and three And-1 plays. Defensively, really tough to match up with Jordan, so we switched everything to take advantage of Williams mobility. It still led us to be soft defensively. The Stats: He scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting (2-3 from the line) to go with 7 boards (5 offensive), 1 assist, 2 turnover and 5 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a +5. The Action: He dunked off the no-looker from LeBron. He blocked a jumper. Second Half: He scored the And-1 off the interior feed from Kuzma (could have been a missed floater), he made the FT. He was called for an illegal screen. He drew the clear-out foul from Jordan defending the post. He cleaned up LeBron’s dribble penetration. He hammered down an And-1 dunk in transition, he made the FT. He scored the And-1 layup off the two-man game with Caruso, he missed the FT.

Wagner -- -- I could probably start tallying how many times Moe stands there as a guard drives to the rim and he doesn’t make even an attempt at a challenge. (Two in the first half.) It happens with regularity. After his first stint in the game (despite some offensive work), he was just too big a liability on the court. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-4 shooting (1-2 from three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 1 foul in 4 minutes. He was a -7. The Action: Good hustle to throw a ball off a defender to regain possession. He swished a rainbow wing three. He cut off Hart’s baseline drive, took the pass and dunked. He missed a three off the pick and pop. He attacked off the three line, took off too early and missed a layup. Leaking out, he took the long outlet and was fouled for FTs, he made one. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Walton -- -- Quick timeout after 3 minutes with the Lakers trailing 11-4… They tied it back up a minute later… Lakers down 3 with 4:29 left when McGee, LeBron and Bullock sat for Moe, Hart and KCP… Soft interior and perimeter D. Good combo… The Lakers trailed 41-30 after the first quarter. Knicks shot 73%… He started a Williams, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Caruso… They cut it to 5 after 3 minutes… Kuzma and McGee back in midway through the quarter down 4… They took the 2-point lead when LeBron sat with 4 minutes left for Rondo. Bullock in, KCP out… They led 66-63 heading into the half… Williams in for McGee up 3… Lakers up 6 when Caruso came in for LeBron… Hart and KCP in… The Lakers led 96-94 going into the fourth (giving up way too many points)… Williams, LeBron, Hart, KCP, Caruso lineup… The lead got to 10 and Luke called a timeout midway through the quarter, up 8. Tank commander needs to pull LeBron about now. No luck for the tankers, but the Lakers worked it out… The offense would resort to long shot attempts and misses. The Knicks chipped away at the lead… Luke called timeout up just 1 with 37 seconds left. He drew up the tank special. Iso for LeBron for a long missed wing jumper (his perimeter shooting had fallen off badly in the second half). Then KCP would make a dumb perimeter foul on the other end. Well executed… Down 1 with 22 seconds left. No timeout. Inbounds to LeBron… “It doesn’t matter. The play is going to be get the ball to LeBron at the top of the floor,” Luke said. Maybe add another shooter around LeBron? Or a better screener? You can position yourself better for success, Luke, even if the ball will be going to LeBron to make it happen...

Last few minutes were laughable. On one hand it's good that the season has been over for a while so it doesn't really matter, but on the other if we're keeping (the bulk of) this roster next year, that doesn't bode well at all

the last few minutes resembles those games in the early season that we lost....very winnable games...maybe that was a premonition to the disappointment this season became.

Thanks DB! I'm sure the players themselves always want to win the game. The last part of this game is giving me second thoughts.

Bad Starts
• Could it be that our starters (as a whole) are just worst than all the other teams (considering today’s 41 points allowed in the first quarter)?
• Could it be that they (mistakenly) think that they are better than their opponents?
• Could it be that their mindset is to “ease into the game” or “let the game come to them?”

Bad Endings
• Could it be that they just don’t know how to close games?
• Could it be that they still don’t understand that the intensity of the game and the need for details is the greatest at the end of games?

Just wondering

PS: Why did LeBron sit apart from his teammates during a TO?

I guess it no longer matters whether the team is trying hard or not, whether the players and management called for tanking the rest of the way or not, nor whether the guys are cohesive in mind and spirit or not. It is still a tough for this fan to read of a defeat of this nature, to a truly lost franchise.

It weighs heavily on me that the team is poised to threaten to fall short of posting a mere five game improvement in the wins column over last season. Ooooof.

Well Lebron is just going to be even older next season, so we really need to bring some big names in.

I think Lebron still has at least 2 more great seasons in him. What we need his high character guys willing to defend and hit 3s at a good clip.Im looking at the rockets game right now and what they have really in all honesty is Harden making plays and finding the open guy for a 3...We should seriously consider emulating that because thats how you build around Lebron. If were lucky we'll get another star but we cant hold our thumbs on magic accomplishing that. Find good players...and i hate to say this but Magic should look at the clippers and what they have done..just smart signings.

Improvement? Lakers need four wins to match last year's win total.

I'm not seeing them on the schedule either.

I have spent the day trying to to think of one area the Lakers are better this season then last. From team identity, perception and play on the court. Is there one?

Also I am not seeing the James move to PF at all. Despite his size he is slow and has no desire to battle in the paint against active and hard working paint players. He is a slow SF these days. Hidden against the weakest offensive player on the other team. Then he can flourish on offense.
