Just wow! This is better than his three championship rings combined. Congratulations.

Quote:
LeBron James says he's INCREDIBLY PROUD of stats showing the students at his "I Promise" school in Akron are making tremendous gains in statewide testing ... just 1 year after it opened.

There are only 240 students in the inaugural 3rd and 4th grade classes at the Akron school -- but numbers obtained by the NY Times show test scores in math and reading were up BIG after the first year.

In reading, the 3rd and 4th graders had initially scored in the lowest percentile -- the 1%.

But, after a year, when the students took the district-wide exams, the 3rd graders JUMPED to the 9th percentile and the 4th graders moved to the 16th!

Take a second and reflect on that -- those are HUGE gains.

And that's not all ... when it came to math, the 3rd graders jumped from the 1% to the 18th percentile -- and 4th graders moved from the 2% to the 30th!!!!

When asked about the incredible improvements, LeBron told the Times, "These kids are doing an unbelievable job, better than we all expected."

Good news. Though I'm sure some here will seek to find the negative in this somehow.

Wow, great news. Horrible that these kids were in such a bad education system previously that they were scoring in the bottom percentiles. Glad to see his school making a real notable and positive difference.

I will give it a try. This is great for those kids, and the kids, teachers, administrators, Lebron and everyone else involved should feel good about the progress. At the same time, it is a reminder of many kinds across the country that still are in failing schools, and will unlikely get a similar opportunity to improve the quality of education they receive.

That’s great, but it saddens me to read that the conditions had the kids in the 1st percentile to start. This tells us how horrendous the educational conditions in Akron have gotten.

I don't think anyone should celebrate being in the 9th percentile...

Great news. Let's hope other players from all sports follow. It's a wonderful
investment into our youth.

Good job by LeBron & Co. of having a vision for those kids.

Wow! You mean less kids in a class room and teachers being able to give kids attention helps in learning? Who would have thunk it?

Good stuff Lebron.
Hopefully we can get more teachers and smaller classrooms throughout the country.

Sure. By definition, someone has to be in the 1st percentile. However, I have a strong hunch that the bar was set unacceptably low for the kids in Akron, especially if they can start raising their numbers so quickly. It makes me angry that the public education system fails so many kids in this country. But that's a topic for a different forum.

Lebron and his stats again. Just joking, we need more wealthy people to contribute towards the future of our youth. Slightly off topic but when he was a Clipper they had a feature on Tobias Harris setting up an after school project that he funded. Hopefully there are more players doing these things than we realize.

That's wonderful about Tobias. If other players are helping silently that's great but I think the more visibility these endeavors receive (especially when they're successful) the more other players (and people in general) might be inspired to follow the blueprint.

Congratulations to LeBron on this life-changing accomplishment!

If LBJ can help pave the way to help with a template to help other athletes and rich folks help, that would be amazing. I think most people are just overwhelmed by the sheer largesse of trying to affect the educational system in America.
