I know this discussion will be ran mostly on hypotheticals since most of us here are not privy to the inner workings and processes of the highest ups within the Lakers organization, but can anyone offer their best rational explanation as to how we got to this baffling point? More specifically, with all the current comments being bandied about including, Jeanie is incapable of running the franchise (e.g., "too weak", " too inept"), or Jeanie does not care about the franchise, amongst others, which seems to be the most likely and why? It just seems too easy to pin all these bad decisions on her apparent incompetence without maybe considering another factor for all the decisions that have seemed so obvious to many of us, even those who are not fans.

It's pretty simple. Jeannie is a people pleaser and is making decisions by consensus.

It was probably Linda Rambis whispering in her ears

You think? I felt like ... she waited until she absolutely had no other choice rather than having vision and decisiveness.

If Linda Rambis can deprogram Jeanie enough to stop drinking the Klutch Kool Aid then she deserves a little respect.
Once the deprogramming's over, she needs to step aside and let experienced executives take over the rebuild though.
They never drank it, Magic or Jeanie. Sadly, there seems to be this idiotic notion that if they fully embrace Lebron (sign shooters; hire a coach he likes) that the team will lose its "Lakerness".

Dr. Buss dies, Jimbo and Mitch destroy the team in 5 years, they finally get a superstar and now they're trying to make it all work. It takes time to fix years of tanking and mismanagement.
If Linda Rambis can deprogram Jeanie enough to stop drinking the Klutch Kool Aid then she deserves a little respect.

The problem is
1) Jeannie has proven time and time again that she will NOT step aside and let the experience executives take over (call it pride, pure stupidity/incompetence, or whatever), because she's stuck in the past and apparently only previous Lakers know what it takes to win championships, and
2) given #1, Lebron and Klutch are actually the grown-ups in the room right now. You can hate on their methods and some of their past decisions all you want, but they're literally the smartest basketball guys we have anywhere near the FO at the moment. So trying to move away from their influence in favor of the alternatives we currently have (Rob the Snake Pelinka and the Rambii) is not exactly in the franchise's best interests.
