What’s the best that the Lakers could realistically get in return for trading LeBron?

Wonder if James is looking at the Rockets as a "grass is greener" situation?

Joins a near miss contender and gets to play with his buddy Paul. Gets to dump the Lakers FO that has a confusing contradictory plan. Obviously a disgruntled James requesting the trade would be needed.

If he wants to move on this would be the time to get the HOU FO on the phone and get as much as possible.

Capela/Gordon/Rivers or Shumpert/ two 1sts.

Also $36M and a #11 pick (or higher) would go a long way in a rebuild.

Rivers and Shumpert are free agents

Thanks for correcting. I know but included for some reason.

Honestly I'm just throwing out possible frameworks as opposed to finalized deals. Addressing he narrative that James would be traded for "scraps" instead of difference makers for the overall team if (and only if) the direction of the team dramatically changed from the 2 max plan back to the develop and rebuild plan.

And to comment to above, I find the Lakers being in this position "pathetic" too.

But with no clear direction or FO leadership and apparent contradictory plans it should not be inconceivable that James would want to spend his last couple years with a contending team and the Lakers should be considering getting the most out of salvaging a pathetic situation.

I think it is fair to discuss- What is best for James? What is best for the Lakers? And most importantly are those goals still the same?

Well, if the word got out that the Lakers want to trade LeBron seriously, LeBron & Klutch would make sure to demand a trade and have a list of trade destinations, killing the Lakers leverage immediately. LeBron at this stage of his career cares about being in a big market, so you can cross off any of the small market teams except maybe the Cav's. Lakers wouldn't trade him to the Clippers, so you can cross them off as well. Only teams that fit that criteria are the Heat, Cav's, Knicks, Bulls, Nets, and Sixers. Perhaps the Warriors, but they aren't trading Curry or Klay, but would consider with Draymond Green, except he's another Klutch guy, so not sure they want to deal with Rich Paul anymore once you trade LeBron. The rest of the deals would be mostly young player based. Can see the Bulls trading one of Markkanen or Wendell Carter since their owner cares about profits mostly, Knicks would do Kevin Knox, Mitchell Robinson, & draft picks, Heat would trade everyone on the roster for LeBron, and that's about it. However, you trading LeBron is the Lakers organization committing suicide with no big name ever coming here again freely by trading a top 3 player of all time.

How about trading James for AD? If AD walks the Pelicans get nothing.

As intriguing as that would be, what is James” incentive to happily go along with that? Perhaps a three team trade? Can’t imagine James is interested in joining another rebuild or small market team.

The only possible way this trade scenario works is with James” blessing because he is going to an established contending team. That list of teams is short.

It would be teams that just missed this year like the 76ers, Rockets, Warriors, Celtics, Raptors, Bucks.

IMO there might be a couple longshot teams he would be open to joining for different reasons like the Clippers, Spurs or Blazers. Unlikely but just maybe?

The only possible way to get past the bad press is for James to buy in and actively be a part of the discussion. The narrative is the Lakers and James realize that the timeline to build a championship roster does not work in LA.

That all the sweet nothings that Magic whispered in his ear were hype with little substance. He was not able to deliver the contending team promised. Now that he is gone the team is choosing to remain on a roster development path and out of respect to James he will be moved to a contender for his final years.

Win win for both sides. And media embarrassment is minimized. Even free agents can decide if they want to join the Lakers “team” as they improve instead of a desperate “must win now with James” strategy.

It would suck to admit the James signing was a mistake but in the long run perhaps a better option for the franchise.

I'm inclined to think it'd be worse right now for the Lakers to seek an off-season trade for LeBron than to retain him through next season. We'd have to take back second class (or worse) pieces of flotsam just to make a deal work, and we might have to accept a head case lead player in return. That's the space the Lakers struggled through for several seasons before LeBron's arrival. Let's avoid that path again.

Teams thinking about trading for LeBron would want to know what they would be getting before they would make the trade. If LeBron would dislike the destination team, then expect the offer from the other team to be lowered or pulled completely.

I don't think that serious trade discussions can be kept a secret from LeBron & Co. The team taking LeBron would want some affirmation that the trade wouldn't immediately blowup on them.

It's unlikely the Lakers could trade Lebron without his involvement and without everyone knowing it was happening. No team is going to give up a ton of assets for Lebron and hope he's happy with the deal. I doubt he will be traded. If he is, I suspect it will be more like the Shaq to Miami deal, where we don't get anything like the value people are hoping for.

For LeBron and BI?
How about Lauri, Beal and Chicago's pick?
