I think Luke's situation was a no win one. He had a dysfunctional team the FO
bought in with odd Vet pieces and inconsistent rookies still developing and then
was further buried by the injury bug. I'm not saying Luke was
a great coach, by any means, but he's not terrible.

Walton seemed to do just fine with the previous roster and plan. He was developing along with the young rebuilding team. They were improving, building some identity and chemistry. They were trending in the right direction. Even players he had squabbles with (Randle) spoke positively about him.

He made mistakes as a first time HC. He should have had an older mentor as part of his staff. His own Winters or Hamblin for example.

He and the Lakers were not prepared for the chaos created by he pressure to win immediately with the signing of James. We have no clue what Magic was promising James and Co behind closed doors. What free agents and roster additions? Walton was doomed the moment they signed James.

Walton was far from perfect. I understand the criticism he gets. I was frustrated at times too. But in hindsight it is too bad the Lakers chose the 2 max free agent win now path they are currently on. Walton is just another wasted asset of a misguided strategy.

Going to be interesting to see if they can complete the plan or will it end up like the Bullet Train project. All hype until the realization of a failed experiment hits home. Not sure the Lakers have the leadership to make the tough decisions to either cut their losses and move on or to find a way to complete the James plan.

Luke was probably the most frustrating Laker coach I have ever watched. With Byron I knew the team was garbage with a run down Kobe. Randy Pfund was also garbage post Magic era

To me, Luke was always a good coach. His only real flaw was that he was not smart enough to put an elite offensive coach into his staff. That one move could potentially place him into elite status over the course of his career.

He was stupid the same way Magic and Jeanie were stupid. He didn't surround himself with the best.

Uh. The worst? That would be none other than Magic Johnson. Oh yeah, Randy Pfund was GREAT, too....

Luke drove me insane. I’ve literally lost more hair over the last 3 years than I ever have. Yes I’m old, but I blame Luke and his moronic game management and high school level game plan.

This, plus I couldn’t stand how after every important timeout and we needed to score we never got the points. We would alway muff it up. Mike Dantoni had some marvelous plays out of time outs. Remember when he fooled the opposing team to run in the wrong direction?!

Are we really arguing that Frankie V isn't a clear upgrade from Froggy?

Come on.

No way the team can be coached worse than last season.

My only concern is this:

Can Vogel get LeBron to buy in?

Thank you Larry...Some people are clueless on this board. I think Bron will buy into Vogel's defensive scheme...It's the offense I'm waiting on.

I don't understand the hate for Frank Vogel. He's not a bad choice for coach, especially when you consider what was out there.

Jason Kidd, on the other hand, is a different story. I am adamantly and vehemently against having him with the team.

I think Luke had strategic deficiencies but part of the reason he struggled was his lame duck status and lack of support from the organization and that will continue next season with Vogel.

Sorry but Luke is a terrible coach. He had his wannabe Warriors offense but never had the right players to execute it. He was never able to adjust. He was a big reason we signed Mosgov and got jack out of him. Refused to upgrade his coaching staff and hire a shooting coach. Good riddance.

No. He had zero strategy plus the reason they brought rambis in as a consultant was because they thought Luke’s staff as a whole was unqualified. Simon I think is only guy still employed.

Luke fielded strong defensive teams while having injuries to key players, a constantly shifting roster, and horribly mismatched parts. He had to coach over new management that wanted to fire him throughout his final season. I agree with the sentiment that his strategy and team management left a little to be desired, but how many people were going to be successful under these circumstances?

That remains to be seen. Both reside in the bottom tier of Western Conference coaches.

It’s already been seen. Vogels track record takes a fat dump on Luke’s and his schemes are better too on both ends

In the WC, you've got Vogel, Luke, Ryan Saunders (who looks like he might be out the door) and possibly Monty Williams at the bottom looking up.

We could have got better than Vogel and I hate his whole Rambii influence on the basketball operations but still, Vogel >>> Luke.

Luke has his own problems. His tenure should tell you that if you have enough talent, i.e. Golden State, any coach can win.

If you don't have a lot of talent, coaching matters.
