|
|
https://www.nbcsports.com/philadelphia/nba-insider-tom-haberstroh/philadelphia-76ers-enter-offseason-critical-crossroads
Quote: | It’s early in that process. Leonard’s shot just fell through the net. But one Western Conference executive brought up a name that could be a Simmons trade target: LeBron James.
“I think they very well might explore that,” said a rival executive of Philadelphia.
James doesn’t have a no-trade clause, but he shares the same Klutch Sports agent with Ben Simmons in Rich Paul. James has two seasons left on his deal before he can become a free agent. After a disastrous offseason in which their president of basketball operations abruptly resigned and they struck out on their top two head coaching targets in Monty Williams and Tyronn Lue, do the Los Angeles Lakers honestly believe they can put together a championship contender in the next two seasons?
If the answer is no, trading James has to be on the table. And if you’re going to do that, there’s a short list of players that would be worthy of being traded for the King. Simmons is certainly good enough to be on it.
A Simmons-James swap becomes tricky because Simmons makes $8.1 million next season, before his rookie extension kicks in beginning in 2020-21 (he will be eligible for extension this summer). Because of that comparatively low salary, Simmons will have to be packaged with another max-level player, or near it, to match James’ huge $37.1 million salary for 2020-21. The Sixers could ink Harris to a sign-and-trade, but not for the five-year max. The new collective bargaining agreement removed that option from the toolkit. Harris would only agree to that if the Lakers were over the cap, which they’re not currently, and Harris desperately wanted to go there. The same goes for Butler in a potential blockbuster trade. Again, this is tricky.
There’s another wrinkle to this: Ty Lue turned down the Lakers job for a reason. He felt he could get a better job elsewhere. He’s holding out for something. Could that job be Philly? It’s not available at the moment. But there’s more than just a little chatter about the Sixers and the Lakers being potential trade partners this summer. Crazier things have happened in this league than Lue and James on a Sixers sideline next to Embiid. |

There are very few trades I would consider making for LeBron. In general, I think it could be franchise suicide if it's a move to simply move on and get what you can because you're tired of the "drama".
I still stand by there is zero reason to trade LeBron as I don't believe he is the turn off to other FA's but rather that falls on our weak management structure. But that's a trade that if offered, you have to look at very hard.

If we land Ben then we have to trade Zo. There isn’t enough room for two playmakers who can’t shoot. |

I don't want Simmons. No indication he's going to be able to shoot anytime soon. Randle was getting better and we dumped him, now it's ok for Simmons to be a non shooter? I'd rather let our guys develop so I don't have to see any pics of someone holding up a 1 drawn on a piece of paper after a game. Pass. |

So now the media begins its “trade James” scenarios too.
Doubtful it happens without James being very vocal about wanting to move to a contender. Just this kind of trade that makes sense for both sides.
James for Simmons and Butler (maybe Harris) would be intriguing. Wonder what else they could squeeze from Philly for a chance at a ring?
Lakers would still have cap for another max ( or a couple of 2nd tier FAs) and a lottery pick.
I’m in. Especially if the narrative can be managed to as positive a spin as possible because of James’ blessing. |

I don't believe a guy as young as Lonzo will finish his career with the same shooting he began with. Jason Kidd, for example, was terrible at 1st and ended up as one of the top 3 point makers in history. Continuing to let go of young developing players because of a
pattern of impatience will prevent this from being a successful franchise. |

With our luck, Embiid would average 30 games for the next 5 years.
Great player, his injuries are a major concern imo. |

Just like Julius Randle, Ben Simmons will never be better than an un-retired Lebron. I would never do the trade. But I wouldn’t put it past Phil, Rambii, and Jeanie to possibly explore it. And don’t shoot the messenger, take it up with Tom Haberstroh. |

The gamble is essentially between Ben learning to shoot, and when will LBJ get old.
LBJ's getting old in the next few years for sure... however, there is some hope Ben might learn to shoot. His free throws seem to be slowly improving... I think he's afraid like Lonzo, but whereas Lonzo at least has the guts to fail publicly, Ben does not. Ben needs to try in the regular season, and ignore what the public thinks.
I think it's a win win because although Philly would probably win the title the next two years... we'd have a nice cornerstone piece to build on for the future.
We'd lose upfront... but we'd win after two years. |

If ( huge if!) they made this trade it is with the purpose of development. With that in mind I’m not in any hurry to move Ball or any of the young players.
Depends on who else was included and if any additional free agents were added. Simmons/Ball rotation could be worked out. I’d explore Ball on the bench before I’m trading him.
Defense and ball movement would be entertaining with a trio of Simmons, Ball and Butler. Certainly not a 3pt shooting team but entertaining as they worked it out!

It would have to be Simmons + Butler, not Tobias Harris, and only if Butler opts in to his player extension. Tobias will be a UFA at the end of the season, so can't be included in a sign-and-trade deal with others.

That would be tough to turn down if you’re a front office hoping to rid yourself of Lebron. |

It's not an ode. It's more of a "wow, the teams issues are deeper than just one Buss kid." _________________ From 2-10 to the Western Conference Finals |

Yes, people know if you put Lakers in anything it’ll be clickbait. I quoted the article though, just so we didn’t have to click the link. |
