One of the reasons defense is so hard to quantify and attribute to a player, is IMO, because defense even more than offense is a team effort especially now that teams aren’t running iso as often and they don’t have to play man defense.

The only time a single player should get credit for a stop is if it was a 1:1 iso play for the entire duration of the possession.

I think its hard for a metric to value preventing a player from dribble penetrating and forcing them to give up the ball to one of their teammates.

A defensive player can intimidate a player before even taking the court. There is no stat that can weigh things like this. It's one example of why defensive statistics are really inaccurate
