In regards to Jerry West, there were several suggested reasons why he wasn't brought back as an adviser.

1. Magic wanted the glory and spotlight of building the team. Having West in-house would have diminished the glory and adulation that Magic wanted.

2. Jeanie carried a grudge because West hadn't endorsed her relationship with Phil from a few decades ago.

3. A combination of both #1 and #2 above.

What everyone ignores is that Jeanie's dad, Dr. Buss, basically forced West out in 2000 by not paying him after bringing Jim in and promoting him.

It's just as likely - if not moreso - that there was animus between Dr. Buss and West that Jeanie is honoring by not bringing West back, as opposed to West not approving of her ex-boyfriend.

There was a money issue between the Jerries, although Buss finally paid West. But west’s issues weren’t with Jim. He wasn’t a huge fan, but it was something he put up with, knowing the ownership would eventually change generations. It was Phil Jackson (and Jeanie) that drove West out. Which is why he was nasty about them, not Jim, after he left.

I keep telling Dr. Laker the same thing, but he keeps insisting it was Dr. Buss who drove Jerry out and trying to push that narrative. Even after his book came out where he explained his reasoning for leaving.

There have been different reasons given to different audiences. Some sort of anxiety disorder was the 1st public response, then the Phil-kicked-him-out-of-the-locker-room incident, then some others - all of which may have been contributing factors.

But the rumors that came out during the 2000 Finals was that because Phil was due a $2 million bonus if the Lakers won a ring, West was expecting the same thing and really felt he deserved a piece of the team.

Which is not the point. The point is - West was a huge pain in the ass for Dr. Buss (which is common for high achievers). He threatened to quit often, worried incessantly, was very conscious of the organizational politics and had a jealous streak. I was told that Dr. Buss was not the saddest guy in the world when West left and - after 19 years of dealing with the highs and lows of him - the Buss' as a group probably decided to not deal with him again.

Dr. Buss could've brought West back in summer of 2007 when everything was blowing up (Kobe trade demand, radio feud between Jimmy/Jeanie), but demurred.

West had a great run with the team from 1960 to 2000. It's over. Let it die.

After 10 years in the Lakers front office, Director of Player Personnel Ryan West is leaving the organization, league sources tell ESPN. West has been well-regarded league-wide for his role in many of the Lakers draft successes of the past decade.

How is it "draft successes" if we had almost none of our drafted players left with us? Jesse Buss would have been fired long ago if he wasn't part of the Buss family. I like the shakeup. Hopefully, we might actually draft players that will stick around in the future.

Doubtful, if drafted players stick around we might have to pay them and have to decide to pay luxury tax or not.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the reason Logo left the Lakers was because he felt underpaid in comparison to Phil. That’s the reason Logo retired, as a player. He learned Wilt made more money, as he had thought that he, Elgin and Wilt made the same amount, whereas the agreement was he and Elgin made the same amount. That was under a different owner at that time. His behavior probably hasn’t changed.

IIRC, The Logo's radio mouthpiece used to be the late "Big" Joe McDonnell, who would bring up the point that if Phil was getting paid, Jerry should, too.

not sure how to take this. I liked our later 1st round picks and 2nd round picks. and maybe West was part of that? Seems like he made a business decision and good for him but i'm a bit concerned about the Lakers if they refuse to promote good talented people within the org. It's not exactly a equal opportunity type atmosphere. and the person at head doesnt seem to care. very concerning.

Pelinka is 49 and the Buss brothers active with the team are in their 30's. There is no need for the Lakers to devote resources to develop West since the Buss brothers will be ahead of him on the list of candidates to replace Pelinka in the future.

His career is going to stagnate if he doesn't move on. Maybe he never becomes a NBA GM, but he will at least get a shot to develop in a different situation.

Pelinka is a "shield" for Jeanie. She will keep him in place as long as possible. However, if the team loses and the pressure amounts, he will take the blame and step down. Could be 2020 or 2021.

Would Joey or Jesse take over the front office then? The Lakers would be the only pro team doing that and the experiment did not work out well last time even with an experienced GM in place.

The team is so left behind in terms of professionalization of the front office. I wish either Joey or Jess could replace Jeanie asap and hire a professional FO. The Buss family is probably not going that direction though.

Personally, I am sick of all the whining about "the front office." In the past two years, we acquired two of the best players in the NBA, and we have built a team that is one of the genuine contenders this year.

But still people whine, whine, whine because -- oh my God! -- other teams land good players too, and it doesn't look like we get to automatically hang a banner without playing the season.

Whine, whine, whine.

I want the Lakers to win. But some of these "fans" deserve to have their team lose.

Damn, I miss Big Joe. Became a fan of his when he was echoing my frustrations about ol' Delmer in the 90s.
