Do you guys remember these logos? The ones that represent the Eastern and Western conferences?

Well... they've been replaced. Or they have been replaced for about 2 years now. This is what we have now:

Did the NBA take a page out of Ballmer's "How to make a logo" book and go with the most boring, generic thing they could come up with?

This is just sad. Just look at the logos the MLB and NFL have for its NL/AL or hockey with its conferences.

What in the world prompted this change? Who thought this was a good idea?

It doesn't seem like we actively see conference logos, other than the All-Star game. And they don't even do that anymore...

Is setting the font color to red considered a logo now?

Looks like logos that TNT or ESPN would use (likely TNT) on broadcasts, and nothing else. I wouldn't classify those as logos, and agree if those are indeed their new logos, they suck. But, thankfully, we never see them.

Found a good article detailing the changes here http://news.sportslogos.net/2018/03/13/nba-standardizes-their-logos-design-experts-share-thoughts/. Looks like the NBA changed it to standardize everything tied to the league level events they host, but obviously, feedback and execution have not been great.

Does this qualify as brutalist design? Stripping the former logos of any personality. Surprised they didn't abandon the West logo for a red and blue rectangle.

I'm so glad I read your post and googled brutalist design. Some amazing architecture popped up and I don't even know whether I like them.

As far as brutalist web design, I like this one
