Injuries... The Lakers were down Kuzma and Cousins before the preseason even began. With the injuries of last season still in the collective memories of everyone, there’s definite concern (if not PTSD) among the fan base whenever a key player comes up in some kind of pain.

So when news hit that Anthony Davis sprained his thumb in the first quarter against the Nets, the wind was taken briefly from the Lakers sails.

The initial news on his thumb sprain appears to be favorable. Hopefully, that holds true and the Lakers don’t see any further setbacks in this preseason.

The Lakers shot a poor 5-32 from three in this one. The last two games have been all about the three ball. The Nets getting good open looks and knocking them down, the Lakers struggling with theirs.

The Lakers one-two punch sat after just one quarter. The rest of the game, the team played the punching bag as they fell 91-77.

LeBron -- -- Man, the finishing around the rim in preseason has been poor. He missed a lot of easy ones again in this one. You could see him growing increasingly frustrated. Got to shake off some of that summer rust. Some nice moments setting up teammates. Green had a nice dive behind the D for a layup on one. I’d really like to see LBJ surrounded more with guys like that (Kuzma, Bradley, Caruso) who know how to move off ball. Very little of that occurring with any frequency right now. The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He missed a three behind AD. He set up AD on a passing sequence. Freight train in transition and he drew FTs on a layup attempt, he made both. He traveled on iso on a spin. He missed a wing jumper on iso. He attacked, spun and flipped in a reverse. He missed a breakaway layup, then the easier putback, uggh. His high-low was picked off. He changed directions, bumped off the defender and scored a transition layup. He stripped Nwaba’s drive. He spotted Green diving weakside for an uncontested layup. He couldn’t finish another layup on the break. Kickout to Caruso for a three at the buzzer. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Davis -- -- He sprained his right thumb during the first quarter on block that looked like he either pinned the ball a little or hit the glass after a full swing on the challenge. He played the entire quarter despite that and did not return. After the game, it was listed as a Grade 1 sprain with no ligament damage. He will undergo an MRI. Grade 1 thumb sprains typically take 1-2 weeks to return and up to 3-4 weeks to fully heal. A huge issue here, of course, is if the Lakers have an injury to one of their stars at the start of the season when we have an easier schedule. You have to take care of business during that time, otherwise you really make it tough on yourself when the schedule gets harder. Hopefully, we get some good news on the MRI for both him and Kuzma. I imagine AD is starting on opening night if the initial diagnosis is confirmed in the MRI. Unfortunately, we’ll miss some of that much-needed chemistry building (as well as learning/experimenting from the coaches). The Stats: He scored 6 points on 2-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 1 steal, 2 blocks and no fouls in 12 minutes. He was a -1. The Action: He rejected Harris’s layup attempt on the first possession. He missed an 18-footer on iso on the first possession. He missed a floater (looked fouled). He stripped a man getting back in transition. Two-man passing sequence with LeBron and he scored a layup (going to the floor). He swished a three straight away trailing the break next time down. He airballed a deep three trying to beat the shotclock. He smothered a man on a switch to snuff out a play. He swiped a pass at the three line. He missed an open three trailing the break. He choked a layup. He made a tech FT. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Green -- -- Really loved some of the weakside rotations in this one. He rejected a sure score at the rim on one and stripped a man on another. Three ball is still struggling a bit. I imagine once the offense settles in, so will he. Hopefully, we are running him off screens too much, either. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-4 shooting (0-3 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals and 1 foul in 17 minutes. He was a -10. The Action: He stripped a ball off a man to get a stop. He missed a three on the break. Great help D challenge at the rim. Beautiful help D on the weakside again to erase a sure layup. He got tapped on a corner three on the other end. Great weakside dive as defenders watched LeBron and LBJ whipped a pass to Green for the layup. He missed a step-back three in transition after forcing a turnover with a reach around. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Rondo -- -- Awful first half on both ends. Depressingly awful. Turnovers on offense and being targeted on defense. Like some of the other main rotation guys, he didn’t play in the second half. So glad. He had 4 turnovers with no assists and didn’t score. Defensively, he lacked effort and awareness at times, getting backdoored or sagging off shooters too much. Ugly. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-2 shooting from three to go with 1 board, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 16 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: His pass was picked off at midcourt on the break. He was called for an illegal screen trying free up AD. He attacked and threw a pass away. Good reach on recovery over a screen as his man hesitated instead of attacked to force a turnover. He sagged off his man weakside to give up a three for no reason. He had his pass stolen after picking up his dribble. He then got backdoored for a layup. He missed an open three. He setup Dwight for FTs on a lob (no points on that after two bricks). He missed a three when the D went under. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Bradley -- -- The shot looked a little flat early on, but eventually he found his stroke from midrange late the game. Good to see a spark of life offensively today. He showed a nice inside-out dribble to free himself up on a couple occasions. The shot looked to go up to the rim a little softer later in the game. He still couldn’t connect from three. Defensively, he avoided the foul trouble. Some of the lineups he was in were trouble to begin with. The Stats: He scored 14 points on 6-13 shooting (0-4 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards (3 offensive), 2 assists, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 2 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -19. The Action: He threw down a follow jam after crashing from the corner. He may have recovered to block his man from behind, but Green was right there, too, at the rim. He couldn’t finish under the hoop, passed it out but didn’t leave the lane for a turnover. He was fouled from behind on a FT pull-up. He attacked baseline and scored a layup. He missed a pull-up but battled for the subsequent loose ball to recover it. He missed a flat three straight away. He missed a three short in transition. Second Half: Inside-out dribble to lose his man, but he missed the wide open midrange. He missed an open wing three. Inside-out dribble to lose his man for a layup. He swished a pull-up from the wing. He sank another midrange pull-up. His interior feed was picked off after he had his man in jail. He missed a wing three. He stuck another pull-up off a high screen.

McGee -- -- One of the better players on the floor today even though we didn’t start either of our C’s. He showed good energy throughout and his activity wasn’t without results. He swatted a couple of shots, deflected a lob and generally disruptive. There was a couple instance where you thought he’d deny a drive he didn’t or come up with a stop and somehow fumbled the ball away, but still good effort. Offensively, he even sank a 17-footer. One of the bright spots so far this preseason. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-6 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 3 boards (3 offensive), 2 blocks, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a -5. The Action: He missed a putback. He deflected a lob. Nearly caught off guard by an interior feed from AC, he somehow fumbled his way into a layup. He erased a layup badly. He swished a 17-footer left alone straight away. Second Half: He blocked a drive. He was stripped trying to post up. He attacked on iso, spun and slammed. He kept an offensive board alive and Cacok dunked. He was fouled on a lob (got both hands on the ball to draw FTs), he made one. Nice switch and pressure to strip a man. He swatted a man at one end, trailed the break, took the pass, spun away from the D and dunked with both hands.

Howard -- -- Strong ovation by the crowd as he entered the game late in the second quarter. The results, however, were a bit poor. He was turnover prone, so anything he denied or stopped on one end, he gave back. Defensively, there was a stretch where they picked on him and Rondo on the two-man defense. I’m not looking forward to seeing that combo defensively all season. Some good moments finishing a lob from KCP where he got up a little. He also had a swat and a strip. The Stats: The Action: He attacked baseline, pumped and traveled to erase a layup. He stripped his man under the hoop to get a stop. He regained possession drawing a foul on the offensive glass. Foul in the post to give it back. He broke up a pass in the lane. Called for three seconds, turnover. He was called for a goaltend. He couldn’t finish a lob but drew a foul on the second attempt, he missed both FTs badly. He was stripped on iso. Second Half: He rejected a drive. He threw down a lob dunk from KCP off a two-man sequence. He took contact after taking a pocket pass to draw FTs, he made one.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- Defensively, he drew a couple of offensive fouls to get stops (should have had another but the refs missed him getting popped in the chops as his man attacked off the dribble). He had a play late in the game that seemed to symbolize this preseason so far. He had an open lane in transition, attacked it, soared and back-rimmed a massive dunk attempt. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 5-12 shooting (1-4 from three, 0-1 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 turnovers and 4 fouls in 25 minutes. He was a -9. The Action: He missed a reverse off a backdoor cut. He attacked and threw a pass into the shins of a crowd, turnover and gave up an And-1 the other way. He swished a pull-up 16-footer (he should have passed to a more open man). He drew an offensive foul off ball to get a stop. He took an inbounds pass and hit an And-1 corner jumper, he missed the FT. He attacked off the three line and scored a layup. He missed an open jumper from the top of the key. Second Half: Travel to start the second half. He drew an offensive foul taking an elbow as he chased his man over a screen. He missed a corner three. He took a fist to the mouth as his man cut, no call. Strong curl and he hit a runner at the front of the rim. He swished a three at the top of the arc. He missed a pull-up. He missed a wing three. He choked a huge breakaway dunk. He forced a turnover. He attacked the baseline and lobbed to Howard. He missed an open wing three.

Caruso -- -- Really poor game, as well. His shot was not falling at all and on a few occasions the ball was in his hand to create when the clock was about to expire, so that resulted in some tough off-balance shots. His one make was a corner three off a kickout from LeBron at the buzzer. Good to see him get a little time with LeBron as they had chemistry last year. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-13 shooting (1-5 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 3 boards, 5 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 3 fouls in 30 minutes. He was a -8. The Action: He was blocked trying to finish on a cut in a crowd. He knocked down a corner three on a kickout at the buzzer. He missed a floater and follow bouncing up quickly. He caught McGee off guard with an interior feed that McGee was able to somehow fumble into the basket. He missed a three straight away. He missed an elbow fade on a busted offensive sequence. He missed a runner in transition. Second Half: He missed a runner. He missed an open wing three. He was blocked on a give and go. He iso’d and charged. He knocked a ball loose to ignite a break. He stood in to draw a charge next time down for another stop. He set up Dwight on the two-man sequence for FTs. He missed a wing pull-up. He missed a three behind a screen. He showed the ball coming off a screen and was stripped. He made a tech. He airballed a turnaround having to force one up to beat the shotclock. He stripped the ball off a man. He airballed a three trying to beat the shotclock.

K. Antetokounmpo -- -- The stats should really be 2-7 and 6 points as he banked in a three. He has that length/agility combo that runs in his family, including those long strides that can be effective on Euro-steps. Some nice changes of direction but defenses were playing off him sometimes to make him prove he can hit from the perimeter. The skills need work, but that will certainly make the G-League games interesting to watch. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 3-7 shooting (1-3 from three, 2-3 from the line) to go with 1 offensive board, 1 steal and no fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +10. The Action: He didn’t play in the first half. Second Half: He banked in a wing three immediately after entering the game (you really should get minus points for that). He missed a better looking wing three. He reached around big on the perimeter to strip him and draw a foul. Euro-step and he banked in an And-1, he made the FT. He changed directions, spun and came up short at the front of the rim. He attacked from the wing and drew FTs, he made one. He tied up a man and won the jumpball. He threw down an easy putback jam. He missed a three straight away. He airballed a 21-footer off the dribble.

Jackson -- -- We had some strong G-League representation going on in some of the lineups. No one has looked comfortable running the point. Seems like we’ve regressed a bit. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three, 1-1 from the line) to go with 1 board, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 2 fouls in 11 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He didn’t play in the first half. Second Half: He threw a pass away on the perimeter. Nice reach in transition to strip a man. He was blocked on a reverse. He missed a corner three. He swiped the ball on a reach, pushed out and hit Cacok for a score. He attacked down the lane off the high screen and flipped in a lefty And-1 over a defender, he made the FT.

Norvell -- -- He opened up his scoring swishing a three to start the second quarter. And then went 0-7 the rest of the game. Just when he had me thinking about potential as a 3 and D guy. The D has actually been surprisingly strong at this level. It would be great if he could drop a decent scoring game and fill sort of a Josh Hart role. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-8 shooting (1-6 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 steals, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 23 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He swished a wing three to start the second quarter, ending up wide open as he came off a down screen. He missed a three straight away. Second Half: He missed a wing three. He deflected a pass, but threw it away on the break on the other end. He attacked off the three line and wanted the foul on the miss. He missed a wing three. He setup Cacok in transition for FTs. Not close on a reverse attempt. He missed a wing three. He swiped the ball on one end, but missed a three on the other.

Cacok -- -- Some missed defensive rotations and also wasn’t recognizing a hot shooter to get burned on a few occasions. Some rookie issues. He did make an adjustment once after getting burned on previous possession on a play and he came up with a steal. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 3-5 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards (3 offensive), 2 steals and 5 fouls in 23 minutes. He was a -6. The Action: Nothing to report. Second Half: He cleaned up a missed Caruso drive. He dunked off an offensive board tapped to him. He missed a floater. After missing a weakside rotation, he got it the second time to steal a pass under the hoop. He swiped a bounce pass. He drew FTs in transition, he made one. He missed a finish at the rim. He scored a layup on the break.

Vogel -- -- Vogel switched up the starters to run with Davis at the C spot. They were challenging the perimeter a little more and it also negated one non-shooter from a Rondo lineup... I wouldn’t worry about rotations in this game. He was more running lineups to get some extended time together. For the most part, though, it felt like a throwaway game… An 11-0 run by the Lakers after a brief scoreless start...KCP in for Rondo with 5 minutes left as the first sub. So shooters vs. a Rondo PG lineup (which was awful)… Caruso in for Bradley, Norvell in for Green with 1:23 left, Lakers tied… The Lakers trailed 20-19 after the first quarter in which both LeBron and AD played the entire quarter… He started a McGee, Cacok, Norvell, KCP, Caruso lineup. Picture Kuzma here instead of Cacok and possibly Dudley or someone else at the 3. A little more steady and solid… Rondo in for Cacok, Lakers up 3 after 3 minutes… Rondo single handedly erased a Laker 5-point lead with awful D and turnovers… Down 1, Dwight in for McGee and Green in for KCP… Bradley in to go with Howard, Green, Caruso and Rondo down 1… Nets immediately go after the Howard/Rondo defensive combo… This unit tanked. Timeout down 9… A 17-4 run by the Nets… The Lakers trailed 47-36 at the half. Ugly… He started a McGee, Cacok, KCP, Bradley, Caruso lineup… They fell back by 17… Down 11 when Jackson came in midway through the quarter for Caruso, who was not playing well… Howard in for McGee down 16 with 4:18 left in the third… Bradley out for Norvell, Lakers down 11… Caruso in to close the quarter… The Lakers trailed 70-61 heading into the fourth… He started Howard, Cacok, Norvell, Bradley, Caruso...Jackson back in for Caruso, who continued to struggle… Cacok, Kostas, Norvell, Caruso, Jackson lineup… Some serious G-League run here...

Thanks DB. I missed all but the last quarter, very throwaway game all right. Very throwaway road trip. It sounds like the first quarter was at least a half decent, competitive quarter. Also, I'm hopeful that Davis' thumb injury heals in time for the start of the season.

Nets twitter account already talking trash - Can't wait for us to crush them in the regular season.

That was an embarrassment on both ends. Vogel needs to stop the mixing up rotations already. McGee/Davis/Bron/Green/Caruso(or Cook).

Par for the course with coaches feeling out the roster. It’s only preseason I’d be worried if it starts to be a thing ala Luke, Byron, etc. 20-30 games into the season.

Thanks DB. 2 things, boy it would be painful to write reviews after a game like today but I still read them. Number 2 my concern with LBJ was I noticed he would be very turnover prone late in games or just not get enough separation on looks towards the end of games and missed crucial buckets. I learned this from Pete but he mentioned on a pod that when players get older they start losing a little bit of their touch around the rim. Obviously LBJ is amazing and still great but I think it’s something to monitor. Just some thoughts

Caruso hasn’t shown he deserves to start over any of our other guards, including Rondo. And I hate Rondo playing at all for us.

It is preseason, it is the only time he can experiment without a real consequence. Heck Phil would experiment even in the regular season.

Vogel has got to know that his likely starters are McGee, AD, Lebron, Green and Avery.

Once we get Kuzma back. And Cook. Will be a stronger rotation with more capable shooters and scorers off the bench. Rotation could be

McGee/Howard/AD
AD/Lebron
Lebron/Kuzma
Green/KCP/Daniels
Bradley/Rondo/Cook

Right now we don't have that impact scorer off the bench (Kuzma).
We have not had a strong minutes impact by Lebron/AD (short minutes).
No consistency in the starting 5 lineup.

Once we get all that, I think we see a totally different team. Similar to the first game.

This was a pretty bad game by Rondo. Zero impact on both ends. His minutes need to be tied to AD and when Lebron sits, and if he is playing well, then he can stay in when Lebron comes back into the game. This should be the strategy with him. Hopefully this has given the staff enough evidence that he won't work as a starter. The problem has been no other PG has stood out. At C, you see McGee has outplayed Dwight and proven himself as starting caliber C (even though Dwight has had his moments and a good attitude). Avery is a good defender but has missed all his 3s. He can not do what Rondo does in playmaking. Caruso has been inconsistent and had a bad last game. Cook has not played due to injury. Of the 4 candidates - Rondo, Bradley, Caruso, Cook. None of them have really been able to prove themselves worthy as a starter. This is the real problem.

Our best bet is probably to rely on Bradley and hope he makes more 3s. And then same with Rondo as a backup. Cook can be relied on for some short minutes as a shooter, especially when Bradley and Rondo can't buy a 3. I wish Caruso had shown he is ready to start, but I didn't see it. Caruso should be given a chance to start, at least in preseason.

This. Early preseason is the time to mix up rotations. Still, I don't like the Lakers losing preseason games.

Thanks DB! What an ugly game. But now's the time to have a stinker of a game. Hope they gained some wisdom from it. AD injury sucks, I hope it doesn't impact the regular season.

So you wait until the regular season to get new players used to playing with each other in a new system? That isn’t a good time to sacrifice games while learning.
