G-League Run... Vogel sat his starters and most of his bench in this one.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a Laker team DNP-Rest as many players and give as much run to the deep bench and G-League talent as they did in this one.

“We’re working through the obstacle that was the China trip,” Vogel said afterward, but added “I’m happy with where we are in terms of implementing our system.”

For those who played, they got to go against some quality NBA talent since the Warriors ran Steph, Draymond and D’Angelo for big minutes. So the 29 points from the Lakers Zach Norvell wasn’t against a garbage-time lineup.

The Lakers were feisty early, taking a 13-point lead. But the Warriors core reeled them in. Still, it was just a 6-point game heading into the fourth. The Warriors would eventually stretch out the lead and win 124-103.

Good effort from the mostly South Bay Lakers. They moved the ball well, they hustled and surprisingly held their own for stretches. Good experience for the two-way contract players.

Caldwell-Pope -- -- He started off hot (14 points in the first quarter), then let poor shot selection cool him off. Too many heat checks and off-balance chucks. Those are the kind of shots he’s been avoiding this preseason. Just keep it simple, please. He’d finish the first half with 17. I’m sure he felt he needed to carry more load in this one, so tried to throttle it up (Vogel said he asked him for 25 points the other night in a similar situation, but he got it tonight). Despite some of those wild attempts, I still think this game is a good sign. He’s looking much more capable than he was this time last season. Hopefully, he hits the ground running this season. The Stats: He scored 25 points on 8-16 shooting (3-6 from three, 6-8 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 33 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He sank a wing jumper coming off a screen. He drained a three in transition. He buried a tough catch and shoot three coming to his right and turning in air. He ball-faked and attacked for FTs, he made both. He swished a pull-up 20-footer on iso. He missed a wing three. He missed a heat-check turnaround from the baseline. He threw a pass away on the break. Great off ball cut as Jackson iso’d and he found KCP for the And-1 layup, he missed the FT. He bricked a corner jumper. He threw a lob pass away. He missed a twisting three attempt. Wide open three and he swished it. Second Half: He lined up at the elbow in the horns sequence, took a handoff and scored a layup to start the half. He missed a wing pull-up. Screen-roll pass picked off. He attacked and drew FTs, he made both. He missed a pull-up wing jumper off that same horns sequence. He drew FTs forcing a drive on Draymond, he made a tech, then made one FT. He swiped a bounce pass trying to backdoor him. He called his own number, iso’d and airballed the three. He stepped on the gas, attacked to his right and scored a layup. Telegraphed pass, turnover. He missed a pull-up (should have found Norvell).

Caruso -- -- In the first couple of minutes, he took a hard charge, then later hit the floor after a finish at the rim. That second one had him eventually take a foul to get off the floor a couple possessions later. He went to the locker room and the Lakers were down another man in this game. Pelvis bone contusion, x-rays negative. Seems like just a hard landing. He needs the time on the floor to get his shot and offense back in sync. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 2 assists, 2 turnovers and 1 foul in 3 minutes. He was a +4. The Action: He attacked and threw a pass away. He threw another pass away when a player turned his back on him, he got it back drawing a charge in transition to get the stop. He attacked hard and finished at the rim, hitting the floor hard. Second Half: He did not play in the second half.

Daniels -- -- He never really got on track in this one. I think that showed more how much he plays off others. We lacked the big guns to collapse the D. The medical staff was looking at him at the end of this one. The Stats: He scored 5 points on 2-8 shooting (1-4 from three) to go with 2 boards, 2 steals and 6 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -11. The Action: He missed a layup on a dive. He sank a wing three on a pistol sequence. He missed a pull-up three in transition. He scored a layup when Kostas found him cutting. Second Half: He missed a 19-footer. He missed a floater, then went over the back for a foul (probably wanted to pass instead of shoot that). He missed a step-back three. He missed a sideline three.

Cacok -- -- One of the more interesting stats tonight was the +6 he had in 35 minutes against the Warriors. As mentioned, they weren’t running garbage lineups. Certainly, they were playing smaller, but he held his own out there against the NBA talent. The stat sheet only shows 2 offensive boards, but you can throw a couple more possession regained on their with him drawing fouls on the offensive glass. My favorite play of the night was probably the bounce pass he threaded to Jackson on a give-and-go sequence. Being able to pick apart the D from the high post areas was nice to see. He’s typically only seen as a threat with his screen setting out there on the perimeter (I’m not sure he took a long jumper this preseason), so seeing him do some work with the pass was good to see. The Stats: He scored 16 points on 6-9 shooting (4-6 from the line) to go with 10 boards, 4 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +6. The Action: He finished the screen-roll layup. He kept a board alive and was fouled shortly later to regain possession again before finally hitting a jumphook on that possession. He scored a layup when Norvell found him in the paint. He missed a floater in the middle of the paint. He attacked the paint and drew FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He kept an offensive board alive. Regained possession again getting fouled on the offensive glass. Strong screen, he rolled hard, took the pass and scooped in the And-1 layup, he made the FT. He threaded a bounce pass to Jackson cutting for a layup. He drew FTs and made both. He finished an And-1 layup on the break, he missed the FT. He missed a jumphook in the post. He dunked off the feed from Norvell as he cut down the lane.

Dudley -- -- Really not the ideal situation for him. He relies on others to breakdown the D. The Lakers had that G-League talent out there which can’t do that at a high level. He sank one three. His only basket. He did a good job keeping the offense flowing, but maybe passing a little too much on occasion and more turnovers than you’d like to see. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (1-4 form three, 1-2 from the line) to go with 5 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 4 turnovers and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a -3. The Action: He threw a kickout away. He missed a wing three. He pushed out the break and hit KCP for three. His advance pass was picked off. He missed a fallaway on the baseline. He missed a wing three in transition. He found KCP open for a three. Second Half: He drained a three, wide open after a passing sequence. He kicked out to Jackson for three. He threw an outlet away. He attacked and threw it away (someone should have cut to the open lane). He missed a corner three. Nice job breaking up a lob on help D. He was fouled on the perimeter.

Norvell -- -- You can excuse Laker fans for not wanting to check this game out, but watching Zach Norvell mix it up and getting the bench excited was actually pretty enjoyable. You just wanted the ball to find him. He had 16 points on 5-10 shooting (3-6 from three) in the first half. The three’s he’s sinking in the preseason are definitely NBA level looks. Not wide open, but creating on iso or from a few feet behind the line or behind screens when defenders go under and try to recover. Then you combine that with his handle dropping guys on changes of direction and he looks every bit of a quality NBA player for stretches. He put Poole on the floor again tonight with a behind-the-back dribble and scored an And-1 layup with his off hand. He sank 5 threes on 10 attempts tonight, showing he can get his shot and knock those down in bulk. Got to love this pick up. He easily looks like he should have been a high second-round pick and even pushing into the first round. I mean, he put together a bit of a highlight reel this preseason. The tools have been impressive, giving the Lakers an offensive dynamic that is much needed in some of their bench lineups. Sure, the shot selection could use a little refinement, but I’d rather see him aggressive as a rookie than not. That’s more important to me. Guys who aren’t aggressive fade into the night. He’s a threat. Hard to say if he’ll find minutes this season, but the G-League will be fun to watch. Hopefully, he can build a little consistency and pick up the schemes on both ends of the floor. The Lakers need to hit on some more youth after the recent trade and picks going out. Zach balled out again...29 from your undrafted two-way player? His second 20+ game in the preseason? Obviously, these were some bigger minutes games that he isn’t likely to see. But, seriously, that’s no small feat. He’s also looked very serviceable on D at times. Dudley praised his work ethic and confidence. That’s a good combo. Kid is showing something. “I’m a shooter. Any shot I shoot, I feel like it’s going in,” he said. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 8-17 shooting (5-10 from three, 8-9 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 block, 3 turnovers and 1 foul in 39 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He attacked baseline and hit Cacok for a layup. He drained a wing three next time down a couple steps behind the line. He missed a stepback three trying to beat the buzzer. He attacked left, changed directions behind his back as the defender (Poole again) went down, then scooped in a hanging off-hand And-1 layup that got the bench to its feet, he made the FT. He swished a wing three next time down on the handoff. He attacked baseline, was blocked, got it back and scored. He attacked and couldn’t connect on a pass. He missed an open corner three. He set up Kostas for FTs on a drive and dish. He drained a pull-up three at the wing. He attacked and was blocked from behind. He drew FTs on a drive and made both. Second Half: He missed an elbow jumper. Pressure D on Steph to reach and cause a turnover/foul, Kerr challenged and lost, that sent Norvell to the line for FTs, he made both. He drained a wing three on the swing pass. He attacked, stopped on a dime and hit the turnaround from about 12 feet out. He missed a lefty jumphook on a drive. He swished a wing three off the flare cut. His kickout was picked off, bad angle. Tough three attempt with a man on him on iso. He missed a wing three. He attacked and drew FTs under the rim, he made one. He took a handoff and zipped a pass to Cacok for the dunk. He was fouled on the perimeter for more FTs, he made both.

Jackson -- -- A lot more minutes than he expected with Caruso going down early. Good job hitting some threes and leading the team with 9 assists. He looked a bit more comfortable in this one and didn’t quite pound the dribble and ball stop as much as some of the previous ones. Still, a bit too many turnovers and poor decisions with the 5 turnovers. The Stats: He scored 11 points on 4-10 shooting (3-5 from three, 0-2 from the line) to go with 4 boards, 9 assists, 5 turnovers and 1 foul in 38 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He threw a bounce pass out of bounds. He set up Cacok on the roll with a pocket pass for a layup. He drained a wing three on a swing pass. He missed a pull-up. He missed an open wing three. He fired a pass to a diving KCP for an And-1 layup. He got caught in the air and turned it over. Euro step and he got tapped on the finish. Way off the mark on a lob pass, turnover. He probed off the screen and drew FTs, he missed both. Second Half: He set up Cacok on the two-man game for an And-1. He sank a three on a kickout from Dudley. He scored a layup when Cacok threaded a pass to him. Telegraphed pass, turnover. He stripped his man. He missed a corner three. He sank a wing three. He coughed up the ball not making the simple pass.

K. Antetokounmpo -- -- He’s looked much more comfortable at the C spot this preseason. Some really good moments protecting the rim. I don’t think guys realize how long he is under the hoop and he also covers a lot of ground quickly so he was eating up some drives. Not a whole lot to his game in this one outside of that, but that part was certainly fun to watch. He got the line a few times and occasionally toyed with trying to do something on offense. The Stats: He scored 7 points on 1-7 shooting (0-2 from three, 5-8 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 5 blocks, 1 turnover and 5 fouls in 27 minutes. He was a -23. The Action: He swatted a drive. He drew FTs and made one. Wow, great job with a control tip of an offensive board from behind a defender and we scored on the extra possession. He couldn’t finish on the screen-roll. He bricked an open three straight away (not close). He was fouled from behind when he was about to dunk and went down, he made both FTs. He hit a teammate cutting with a nice feed for layup. He swatted Draymond, then was called for a foul on a strong challenge a few seconds later. He couldn’t finish a dunk attempt. He drew FTs on a mismatch in the post, he missed both. He was fouled in transition and made both FTs. Second Half: Swing pass to Norvell for three. Might have blocked another one under the hoop. He denied a drive going vertical. He stepped on the baseline trying to create. Euro-step and he missed the runner. He missed an open three. He couldn’t finish in the paint on one end, but denied the Warriors with a rejection a few seconds later on the other. He dunked off a loose ball shortly later.

Allen -- -- Another G-League call up to get some playing time and cash. He fouled out and looked like he took some ribbing from the bench. The Stats: He scored 4 points on 1-5 shooting (0-1 from three, 2-4 from the line) to go with 1 assist, 3 steals and 6 fouls in 21 minutes. He was a -25. The Action: He choked a layup on a drive from the corner. He was swatted on a drive. Second Half: He swiped a pass, pushed it out and drew FTs, he made one. He setup Cacok in transition for an And-1. He attacked Curry, spun the other way and drew FTs, he made one. He missed a corner three. He missed an open pull-up at the FT line. He stole an outlet hustling back on D. He attacked from the corner, switched hands in air and scored the layup.

Vogel -- -- He said he hasn’t solidified his starting lineup yet. I would have liked to see them get a little more run and chemistry building in this one so he could at least do that. Still, the preseason was a bit weird with the schedule, so however they want to handle the minutes, hopefully, they feel pretty good about the progress they made. They’ve got smart players on this team and certainly played with some really hoop IQ in the last one… Caruso out for Jackson after 3 minutes when he hit the floor hard, Lakers up 4. So another player out… The Lakers pushed out to a 13-7 lead despite that… Norvell in for Daniels...Kostas in for Dudley, LAkers up 8… Lakers up 24-12 with Cacok, Kostas, Norvell, KCP and Jackson against the Warriors trio of Curry, Draymond and DLo… Allen in, Kostas slides to C as Cacok rests… The Lakers led 32-31 after the first quarter… Kostas, Norvell, Daniels, Allen, Jackson lineup to start the second quarter… Lakers down 1 when Dudley came in for Allen… Jackson out for Allen shortly later down 4… Kostas out for Cacok down 4… Cacok, Dudley, Norvel, KCP, Allen lineup… Jackson back in to man the point… The Lakers gave up 40 points in that second quarter… They gave up 71 at the half… Daniels out quickly after a foul for Norvell… Some horns sets for KCP set up by the coaches… Good job by the G-Leaguers this quarter against the Warriors starters… They trailed 94-88 heading into the fourth… They ran some zone D in the second half that looked pretty awful at times… Timeout as they trailed by 13 after coughing up the ball a few times… Kerr bringing back steph with 6 minutes left…

First

Also love that ZN got to the line as much as he did.

So if Cacok was a +6 in 35 minutes and we lost by 21, does that mean we were -27 in the 13 minutes he didn’t play?

Thanks DB.

I actually enjoyed watching our G-league team compete with the once mighty Warriors. The Lakers showed toughness and some NBA-level talent tonight. That bodes well for this team going forward. I even liked what Jackson was doing at PG tonight unlike in the other games. He has toughness and some promise. Norvell and Cacok are guys to give some NBA run to.
K. Antetokounmpo needs to get stronger but I love how he went after those blocks! The future looks promising for some of these players.

I think this team is actually listening to this coaching staff. Good to see.

So, on a related note, the Lakers have 20 players on the roster (including Cousins). They can keep 15 in addition to Zach Norvell and Kostas Antetokounmpo who are on 2-way contracts; Norvell is a lock to keep based on his play. Marcus Allen and Demetrius Jackson will most likely be waived (and end up at South Bay?). That leaves a single roster spot for one of Talen Horten-Tucker and Devonte Cacok unless the Lakers release Antetokounmpo or one of their veterans (Cousins, Caruso, Rondo, Cook, Daniels, Dudley, etc.).

They're not releasing THT. My bet is that Cacock is cut and offered a G League deal.

I considered that a win last night. The young guys were out there competing with the Warriors starters for most of the game and denied them their revenge blowout.

I really hope the Lakers cut Cousins and keep Cacok and Norvell. Both have shown they have potential to stick in the league.

I would not cut Cousins. There is a chance he may be healthy in the playoffs and gives you 10-12 minutes a game there. A three man rotation of Dwight, Boogie and McGee. Good luck. Plus, he may come back on a vet min the following year. I still invest in Boogie.

Now as to who I would cut, if Caruso is not getting PT, then I would strongly consider keeping someone who is a better fit, shooting and scoring the ball especially. We saw how easy it was Cook to fit in. A G League guy, needs to be a natural fit in a role you identify. Caruso is clearly not going to start for the team or get minutes over Bradley, Rondo or Cook at 1.

Do we need his skills as a backup, or do we need a quality shooting/scoring threat at the 1? That's what I would be asking. I would send Caruso to the G League, and keep a guy who I know if I called upon for 10-12 minutes in a given game, would respond with some punch. Based on preseason play, I think Caruso is not that guy you can rely on for that punch. I don't think he fits in with this group as well as he did the group we had last year.

Yeah. I agree with this. I really like their games and spot minutes here and there from these guys would keep things interesting.

Cousins is done.

As much as I love seeing the Warriors lose, thank goodness it's the regular season again.

Yes but politics matter with players. I would keep Cousins if it made AD signing more evident. But I agree
