Thanks for the breakdown, Eric.
I wonder if max extensions will be discussed in the next CBA. There's no reason why free agency should give a player more flexibility AND more money (unless that player is on another team and the Lakers want him ). |

That's actually a point of contention for several NBA executives who don't understand why the rules limit teams from giving a maximum extension to a willing player.
"It's why Gordon Hayward left the [Utah] Jazz for [the] Boston [Celtics in 2017]," a former executive said. "The Jazz wanted to extend him before he hit free agency. He probably would have taken it, but they couldn't pay market value. Once a player is on the market, anything can happen. It's one of the worst rules in the [collective bargaining agreement]."
It is a pretty weird quirk to a CBA that wanted super stars to stay put. But I'm sure that's because the players wanted it that way and negotiated for it. They get the best of both worlds. Same money to return, or same money with new team. |

Free agency movements still puts the NBA in the spotlight. Look at the KL saga. I don't thin the NBA is complaining. Probably only small market executives are complaining. |

it's an area of the CBA that both teams and plays want fixed - they tried to fix it last time going from 15% to 20% in an extension but it's still not market value - just think they half-assed the solution _________________ Salary Cap Strategist and Columnist at Bleacher Report and on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/EricPincus |
