I'm an Eagle Scout. One of the most meaningless accomplishments of my life.

Does it rank above or below the degree in animal husbandry?

Jokes aside, I always treated eagle scouts with suspicion. There's almost nothing so blatantly obvious in the "I want to project myself as a do good upstanding joiner of the stick in the mud abstinent type of guy that uptight old people love to so I can get ahead club" way. It's the equivalent of wearing a bow tie in middle school and writing your essays about your quandary between being a prosecutor or a Republican congressman first.

Josh Hart was an Eagle Scout, remember.

...Yeah, you're right...

It has been a half century since I was involved in this stuff. Back then, I regarded Eagle Scouts as kids who either really, really loved the whole Boy Scout experience or (more commonly) who had pushy parents. I was fine with the first group, but the second group was sort of like the Junior Achievement crowd with uniforms. I was a Cub Scout, a Webelo, and I think I dropped before I got much beyond that. Looking back on it, I'd say it was a positive experience. But again, this was a long, long time ago.

Scout's honor!
I thought Russell from UP was very commendable.

I was in the second group.

I had some fun in scouting, but I think it's sort of weird to be doing it past junior high or especially freshman year of high school. It's a kids' activity. I wouldn't really say I regret it, but I wouldn't have stayed past first class if not for wanting the achievement for my college applications.

Surprised the Catholic Church isn't also bankrupt having to pay off all the lawsuits from all the pedophile's they hid over the centuries. Same thing with the Boy Scouts.

One group is worth hundreds of billions and has a robust revenue stream.

"They take in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. You talk about a good bullsh*t story, if I may be permitted a small pun, HOLY SH*t!"

Yet another Carlin bit that seems appropriate to this discussion.

Scouting will be around but I think the Boy Scouts are doomed in the USA. There will probably be smaller more religious centric organizations that take up the cause.

Glad it finally happened. The list of criticisms for this organization are long.

Didn't know that, handy in case we are hiking together and someone needs to start a fire.

I didn't stick with it very long as a Cub Scout, my younger son went through Life Scout and was two badges short of Eagle, and then said nah, want to play football and band in high school. I used to help with the fundraising and business side. Sorry to see them go, I always saw the positive in kids doing outdoor things and community service, instead of just TV and video games.

I went to a couple of meetings when I was a kid in the 80s. I vaguely remember being held upside down to receive a pin. I remember building a toolbox out of wood and nails and that they gave me a book with different types of knots, lol what nonsense.

I didn't fit in with the kids that were in it. So I lost interest quick and didn't go again.

I never went to any of the camp outs or anything where I was away from my parents for an extended amount of time.
