Designer casket honoring Kobe Bryant is ‘nothing people have ever seen’

Quote:
ELIZABETHTOWN, N.C. — Last week, casketmaker Fletcher Collins loaded a customized tribute memorial into a rented van before he and a couple of friends drove cross-country from his business in North Carolina's Mount Olive community of Elizabethtown to Los Angeles.

Collins’ destination over the roughly 2,260-mile trip is a public memorial service being held Monday for basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna “Gigi,” at the Staples Center, nearly a month after their deaths in a Jan. 26 helicopter crash in California.

There, in front of the center on Tuesday, he unveiled to the public what he calls his masterpiece, the “Staples Center,” which he dedicates to the families of Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter and the seven other people killed in the accident.

A number of celebrities and athletes are expected to be on hand, including members of the Lakers and the Clippers, and former N.B.A. stars like Shaquille O’Neal and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league’s career leading scorer. Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors and Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks are among the current players who have said they will attend, along with Luke Walton, a Lakers teammate of Bryant’s who now coaches the Sacramento Kings.

Sabrina Ionescu, a guard for the University of Oregon women’s basketball team, told the Pac-12 Network that she was among those who had been invited to speak. Ionescu had grown close to Bryant, a vocal advocate for women’s sports in recent years, and to Gianna, who had dreamed of playing in the W.N.B.A.

Quote:
Players from the N.H.L.’s Los Angeles Kings and the W.N.B.A.’s Los Angeles Sparks will also attend the memorial, Zeidman said. The Kings and the Sparks play their home games at Staples Center, and both hang their various championship banners not far from those that Bryant helped win for the Lakers.

Mychel Thompson said that Kobe was Klay’s favorite player. When Klay was in high school sometimes Kobe would stop by and work out at the same gym (UC Irvine?). Anyways, Kobe was always good to Klay and his brothers. Giving them pointers about their games.

Around 2015/2016, I remember Kobe calling Steph and Klay killers, even though they appeared to be friendly. In some way, I have a feeling Kobe had something to do with the player Klay turned out to be.

Who do you think on TV will have the best coverage? It is on so many channels, I can't decide which one to watch.

Same here. I work at LA Live in the AEG/ESPN building and they let us work from home today because of the crowds expected. Super nice of my employer to do that.

Try Los Angeles Times link above. They just finished interviewing Jordan Farmar and showing former teammates (i.e. Turiaf, Ariza, etc.) and former competitors (i.e. Bobby Jackson) who are at the Staples.

Here I go with the tears again. This is tough.

I am hoping to get some sort of closure from this memorial so I can get back to watching the games again.
