The internet has not only done far more damage than good, but the damage is permanent.

I think smartphones (which have also done some good) deserve a bulk of the blame.

Smart phones make some users dumber.
And social media makes some users more anti-social.

Meh, it's a different kind of social. In different eras it was "You spend all your time watching TV rather than playing outside," or "You spend all your time with your head buried in that newspaper rather than talking to other people on the train." But think even of this thread, how geographically and demographically diverse we are, and how that kind of reach never would have been possible before.

So these changes have their good and bad, but mostly it just....change. On the good side, the Internet and social media brings us all together and amplifies our individual voices. But on the bad side, the lone kooks are now an assemblage of kooks whose message is amplified.

I constantly warn my 82-year-old great aunt about this, as she often relays, to me, some of the oddball information she reads on Facebook (and ends up believing).

Unfortunately, it's not just 82 year old relatives that need warning.

I thought I'd lost my phone once.

I was traveling to NJ to visit relatives. I booked a pickup service to the airport. I left my jacket with my phone in it in the car. I was lost. I didn't know a number to call. I wondered how I'd let my niece know I'd arrived, I didn't know her number. I rely on my phone.

The plane I was boarding had engine problems. We were given the option to wait until the problem was corrected and leave that night or wait and fly next day. I said to myself, no way I'm flying on that one. I waited.

Next day, and this is no lie, I was picked up by the same driver I had on the last trip and lo and behold there was my jacket and phone in the seat. Providence rules.

Since then I've backed up my contacts on my computer, another device. We're becoming slaves to them. Shades of I Robot.

Have you paid any attention to American politics at any level in, say, the last half century?

I have a new one as a result of binge watching this series on Prime called Hunting Hitler about Hitler escaping to Argentina. They make a very good case that he did not in fact kill himself. The skull the Russians were keeping that was supposedly his was DNA tested and proven to be a woman. He flew his personal belongings out a few days before he supposedly killed himself, and there were over 40 flights evacuating Nazi brass just before the war finally ended. They found tunnels from his bunker to the airport. Declassified FBI files reveal quite a bit about their suspicions that he was living down there.

Hitler did not die at the end of WWII, he escapted to Argentina and lived out the rest of his days in hiding.

I don't hang out with Grover Norquist, sorry.

If a raging megalomaniac like Hitler managed to live quietly in hiding for another 2-3 decades, that would be perversely impressive.

banana bread and corn bread are better than 87% of cakes

there should be a gulag for peons who hold their phone perpendicular to their face like it's a hot dog while they yell at someone who is yelling back at them on the speaker

sharing space and resources with people who are not bothered with honoring the shared aspect, nor do they have their (bleep) together--financially, intellectually, politically, whatever--is a pain in the ass

not only am i pro choice but i'm a big proponent of population control via abortion

Only caveat I have for higher taxes is that it needs to go to domestic programs. Military spending is high enough as things stand now.

For example, most people think fireworks rule and are awesome. But I think those people are wrong.

Actually, all fireworks suck and are lame.
