And who is the current best player in the league? For the sake of argument, assume Durant and Curry return to form next season.

My list:

Kawhi
Lebron
KD (with the assumption OP mentioned)
Giannis
Curry
Doncic
Harden
Lillard
AD

I also define best in this context as whom I'd rather have in a playoff series. Maybe I'm being too prisoner of the moment with Giannis but w/e.

Lebron is top 2 with Kawhi, but I give Kawhi the edge due to age. Giannis is not there yet and he is 3 or 4 depending on KD’s health and return.

AD is 5-7 depending on which AD shows up. He’s probably more towards 7, but really could be top 3 if he truly realized his skill and potential.

Why is Giannis the MVP during the regular season but disappears during the playoffs?

Sadly, the season shutdown really benefitted Kawhi. He's looking more spry than I ever recall and right now he's just flat out dominant.

LeBron and Kawhi are the top 2 in either order.

AD can’t be in the top 10 since he can’t be the go to player on a team.

I generally see AD in the top 10 of any list ranking the league's best players, usually between 6 and 9.

I predict AD will finish in the top 10 for MVP voting, after finishing 2nd in DPoY.

So I think it's safe to say he is generally regarded as a top 10 player.

And those lists are wrong. It is group think.

AD is probably the best complimentary star in the NBA, but will always need to be paired with a better player. As the best player on a team, his teams are lottery teams and only go as far as the best shot creator / scorer.

Nah, there are def. not 9 better players in the League then him when you consider both sides of the ball especially. But hey, maybe every single other person is wrong and you're right? mayyyybe

It's EXTREMELY rare to win a Championship with only 1 elite player on a team so if he's contending there's going to be a great chance he'll have another top player. The other player doesn't have to be better he just obviously has to be a creator in both passing and scoring.

I disagree with you. But ultimately it doesn't matter whether we decide he's the 6th best, 9th best, 15th best or whatever. It's just a subjective label that doesn't affect anything.

I have Kawhi. From what I’ve seen from both of them in the playoffs so far I can’t put Lebron above him. I feel like Lebron isn’t used to turning it on until the conf finals so we probably haven’t seen his best yet. Kawhi on the other hand has put the team on his back multiple times.

Who's the wise guy who voted for Durant?

Or better still, why would the OP even put him on the List when the the question asked includes the word "NOW"?

Which is defined as: "at the present time or moment"

At this present time or moment Durant is sitting in an easy chair somewhere WATCHING the playoffs...

lol

Very subjective topic as there are so many facets to basketball, so I chose to look at it from the standpoint of who I will build a team around. Ignoring age Lebron's the best choice (Kawhi close 2nd), taking age into consideration then Luka

regular season was different, but playoffs it's:

1: LBJ
2: Kawhi
3: tie AD and Giannis (i'd probably vote Giannis higher if he could just shoot)

AD's not always the #3 guy, especially during the season - but when he turns on the engine, he's pretty much unstoppable - and he's been "on" almost the entire playoffs

Just wanted to add that Jimmy Butler's probably the best non-superstar player (not just recency bias) out there. Got to respect great players who are also two-way players

At the risk of recency bias, Giannis moved down a peg. Even before that ankle sprain he simply lacked that Kobe-Jordan or LeBron DNA. To me, the top player has to be the go-to guy and even trash whatever game plan or adjustment the opposing team makes. Big bonus if they are elite or near-elite defenders.

Kawhi
Lebron
Giannis
Doncic (rapidly rising, probably at the top in a season or two despite defense)
AD
Harden (I just find his game annoying)
KD
Curry
Lillard

Bron is the best player every year. They could give the MVP to other players but at the end of the day, he's always been the best player. When Westbrick and Harden won the MVP, did the people who voted really believe those guys were better than Lebron?

Top 3 are pretty close:

LeBron:
- the best playmaker, mixed with court vision and experience
- still a good scorer, can score at will most of the time
- still a good defender
- may not have enough energy for extended minutes
- missing some quickness

Kawhi:
- the best defender
- a good scorer, can make big shots/tough shots
- an average passer

KD:
- the best scorer
- a pretty good defender
- an average passer

*LeBron is the best of these 3 at his prime time.

Doncic:
- great playmaker
- great scoring skills, good range, can hit big shots
- good body
- could be a MVP in a few years

Giannis:
- the best athlete
- scoring, defense skills not polished to championship level yet

AD:
- a great defender
- a good scorer

Curry/Harden/Lillard:
- great scorers
- average in other aspects
