Brian Cook

Strengths:
Can hit the open jumper, close, mid, or long.
Can be counted on to be a 3rd scorer, shooting 50+% per game scoring 12+ points.
Takes smart shots (although most of them are wide open from Kobe).
Sets picks more often than other clowns in the team.
Hustles.
Improved SIGNIFICANTLY every year he has played in.

Weakneses:
Crap D. Can't stay on man, lets man post him up.
Has trouble boxing out for the rebound.
Softy on offense (although he can shoot, he can't post).
Can't create own shot.
Makes careless fouls.
Can't block, or defend in any smart way.
Has a tendency to complain, with a low reputation (technicals).

I like him.

You? Thoughts?

He is ok.....off the bench. The guy is not a starter, and unless he ever gains some strength, he will never be a starter.

He's the best catch and shoot player on the team. For a guy who shoots jumpers, he's very accurate. He shoots 50% on threes, and about 52% overall. Although his defense can't be classified as good, it is improving. He keeps going to big man camp to work on his game in the off-season. He's not afraid to take the big shot. He shouldn't be, because he makes shots at a high efficiency.

I think Cook as a better chance at being a good defender than Kwame has at being a good offensive player.

I like him. I think it's more difficult to learn how to shoot than it is to get stronger and defend.

Cook is becoming a tall version Glenn Rice.

Cook is good for offense. Actually very good for the Triangle.

But he is not interior defender at all. No real shotblocking. No real rebounding presence.

The only thing he can do is flop. And that's not enough to be an interior defender.

Cook should be a backup. Same with Smush. We have three very good backup players in Cook, George and Parker.

Unfortunately with the lack of depth on this team, those guys are playing big minutes for us.

How could you not like Cook compared to stiffs such as Walton, Medvedenko, Aaron McKie, and some of those guys. Cook is at least a legit scoring threat for the Lakers. Is he great? No, but he is better than 90 percent of the others on this team.

Cookie has been good for us. He gives us a big that can shoot. That is rare in this league. It's funny cuz in Phil's book he said they picked up Cookie for a big who could play inside. Cook is never on the block. He is a good triangle player. Has as good a shot as Horry did. Prolly not as clutch, but yet he can hit some big shots for us.

Cook has value on this team. He wants shots, he makes shots...a rare combination.

I'm suprised there hasn't been more hate for Cook in this thread so far. Are we using it all up on Lamar and Kwame?

Well, anyway, I like Cook a lot. He comes in every year with a little bit more game. That shows that he gives a damn, and that he keeps on giving a damn during the off-season.

I've always felt that the most you can expect from a player is that he tries as hard as he can to win. To that end, I value effort over talent.

Look at how Cook reacts to a loose ball compared to someone like Kwame. Cook throws his body on the floor and HUSTLES. Kwame (like 90% of big men) slowwwwwwlllyyy bends down to pick it up, as though no one on the other team wants the ball. I hate that!

I like him. He is a good role player who can shoot and block the occasional shot.

he can shoot, and plays with effort and shows more passion than most of our players. he's also one of our more effective players within the triangle.

not many outside shooters in this league average 52% shooting.

He reminds me of a Donyell Marshall type. It's a nice weapon to have a big that can shoot from the perimeter. Most big men in this League absolutely hate going that far out from the basket to defend.

Cookie has become the Lakers most reliable 2nd scorer. The one thing he does (shoot) he does well.

Defensively, he's too slow and unathletic to stop the opposition.

The Lakers Have a Bunch of Big Man that Specialize in One Thing but arent good in other areas that makes them a weak unit. If we could combine them they would be great.

Chris Mihms Height and Athleticism
Kwames Browns Strength and Post Defense
Brian Cooks Shooting Ability
Ronny Turiafs Heart and Energy
Andrew Bynums Willingness to Learn and Shot Blocking Ability

If only it could be bottled and found in a package of one.

Cook's numbers for this month:

14 points per game
4.5 rebounds per game
50% from 3
25 minutes per game
89% from the line
55.6% from the field

Rebounds should be at 7 or 8, but not much else to complain about with his offense. Defense, well we all know that is a big weakness and it shouldn't surprise anyone.

Kobe plays well with Cook, Cook can bail Kobe out with his ability to score quickly and decisively. Cook is a terrible team defender and a below average one on one defender. Cook is a decent rebounder. Cook rarely turns the ball over. When Mihm is not asleep I like this lineup...

Mihm
Cook
Odom
Kobe
Smush

Cook is a great definition of a role player. He knows his role is to step on the floor and shoot the ball. What is impressive is that he works on the offseason on his weaknesses. He isn't a great rebounder, but he is better this season than he was before. He works on his defense, and always gives the effort. He is a good scorer off the bench, something the Lakers need.

As for liking him, he is a U of I alum, so you have to love the guy.
