Could be a big deal:

Quote:
Sources: The Lakers have requested a career-ending injury application to have Luol Deng’s salary removed from team books. Deng agreed to buyout with Lakers in 2018, retired last October and is owed salary through 2022.

Does this mean the Lakers would potentially have 5 million more to spend?

This would be fantastic. Especially for 2021. Hope it works out.

Would help the Lakers use the full MLE and stay under the hard cap.

What's the injury though?

Maybe Larry can help answer whether we have a good chance at this or not. I imagine it complicates things that Deng isn’t currently on the team.

I’m guessing our application will be denied. Definitely worth a shot though.

All Cupcake's fault, league should transfer this hellish contract to the Hornets.

The Heat were able to get out of Bosh’s contract due to his career ending injury, but he was currently employed by them and failed a physical.

Deng last played with the 2019 Timberwolves and did end the season with a foot injury.

Hmm. It looks like the Orlando Magic successfully did this with Mozgov last year:

Do to the lag time between the buyout and this application, it sounds like approval will be a stretch. But it is certainly worth pursuing.

Wow that’s awesome news, additional 5M is huge we can potentially now go after the more bigger name FAs.

Why is it a stretch? Magic just got approval last year

If the Lakers end up winning this, we will definitely go after guys like Bogdan/FVV in FA.

Re: Mozgov

He had already gone to Russia to play when Orlando filed their request. There is precedent for this, even with a player who is still actively playing.

How would we receive this? As an exception or just removing Deng's 5M?

I suspect the issue will be that the injury did not occur while Deng was a Laker. It’s his salary that’s still a Laker. How the league interprets this will likely be how they decide on it.
