Magic’s fault, Deng would be off the books if not for him.

And without stretching Deng's contract we would have not been able to build last year's team and therefore probably no championship.

Obviously he's going to troll and poo-poo anything we say, but the Lakers were also Kyrie/Dlo/Kawhi-hunting (whether they ever stood a chance is a separate topic). They needed to stretch Deng (and also, for him to give up a ton of guaranteed money, so props to Lu as well) in order for a 3rd max contract slot. Yeah, they also had to dump Wagner & Jones & Bonga, but they got it done.

That max slot turned into DG, KCP, and other non-exception valuable bench/chemistry pieces.

and good chance Lebron doesnt come if we have Deng's contract in full. and No AD. some people just arent meant to be GMs

Except Lebron announced that he was going to sign 2 months before the Lakers waived Deng.

The FO made a mistake and waived Deng 1 full year before they had to instead of investigating every option for 12 months.

And if it wasn’t for the horse trading fool and chaz the bartender , deng would have never been on our team.

This site would be great if there was an ignite feature for the clipper fan VLF.

He’s lucky he used to be a mod here , otherwise he’d have been banned long ago .

“I just knew it was getting worse,” he said. “It wasn’t one of those injuries if I played through and get treatment I could overcome it. It’s something that I needed to be out for.”

He had issues before the Lakers. And after the Lakers. I'm sure we've got a lot of documented medical reports talking about it while he was with us.

Because this is simply about clearing money off the books and not preventing a player getting paid my assumption is that Silver will approve it as a favor to Jeannie thanks to her capitulation to help the new CBA get approved.

And this way Minnesota can benefit as well be filling the same provision which allows teams to save money during a recession.

One thing is for certain...if you dont ask the only answer you can get is NO.

Rob showing the world that his understanding of the cap is excellent. Trying to find money for all the players. That's a great look for us.

I don’t know what extent Silver plays a role in this. It’s supposed to be independently reviewed. (But you know how politics are in this league ... so who really knows?)

Exactly.

Something tells me Jeanie has a couple favors she can call in.

It's not like this league hasn't put draft cards in the freezer so it could look like some franchises are just 'lucky'.

Deng's contract feels like the 'Why wont you die' girl from Austin Powers.

Good on Pelinka to explore this. Doesn't hurt to try, but I doubt the league does Jeanie any favors. There are too many crybaby owners that throw tantrums whenever anything goes the Lakers' way.

Technically, he's right. We've been through this a few times over the past couple years. It seems like waiving Deng had a cathartic effect for a lot of people, but from a salary cap perspective it was a debatable decision. This has all been talked to death elsewhere.

I have my doubts they will grant the Lakers their exemption, but absolutely no harm in trying and shows you that even after winning a title, the Lakers are hungry and active for more.

This is a rare thing we have, in AD and Bron. So long as Bron is a MVP level-top 5 level guy, we have a legit shot a title if you give him AD, who in his prime is a top 3 impact/value guy. It's just so close just with those two, so if you can make any extra move, you probably see the Lakers do it.

Yeah, the politics on this...it's hard to say how that can come to play. I imagine that stuff always working against us because of the other governors.

Again, however, it's supposed to be an independent review of the medical data. I'm sure our case will be based on whatever we have regarding his achilles and that we didn't think he could last enough games before shutting it down. What happened with the TWolves proved that, etc. etc. And we make that case. I don't think it's as big a stretch as people's initial reaction to it is. But it does still feel like it might be tough unless there is some surgery or something that we don't know about that happened after all this which would tilt this heavily into our favor.

Yes, the question was with respect to the timing, the Lakers could have kept their options open for a lot longer than they did - that's a fact.

Right. I suspect that Magic was motivated to make the move because it was unseemly to keep Deng exiled for another year. That would bother a former player like Magic. We had gotten some negative press about it, too. Also, Deng was offering a discount on the buyout because he wanted to go somewhere else and play. This turned out to be poor financial decision by Deng. He didn't recoup the discount.

At the time, there were questions about the timing of Magic's decision to stretch Deng. This is because we cleared cap space that we didn't really use at the time. But in hindsight, we would eventually have stretched Deng anyway because we would have wanted the cap space in the summer of 2019. We might not have gotten the discount in the summer of 2019, and the numbers would have worked out differently. I think someone took the time to work through the details in one of these threads. I don't remember the precise outcome.

Speaking of deng being old. Wasn't there's a debate about his actual age?

He's officially 35. How old is he really?

Lebron got his revenge on both his ex owners with this chip, no doubt the Ballmers and Cubans as well probably haven't slept so soundly since our clinching game!
