I agree, he sounds bitter, he should just give credit were it’s due.

And Pelinka said this championship will have a gold star, not an asterisk.

My thoughts are his comments would be different if he had won. Pat Riley is bitter about Lebron

Hate to say it but the man is right. We had a completely healthy Anthony Davis, Danny Green, and Avery Bradley (not to mention DeMarcus Cousins) and after dispatching Damian Lillard, James Harden and Jamal Murray we would have had no answers for Goran Dragic.

You're missing some of his quote. He says an asterisk because of injuries. It was still said in poor taste. Injuries are part of the game Pat. And the Lakers didn't have AB.

For those unaware:

“I had two to three days of tremendous anger. I was absolutely livid, which I expressed to myself and my closest friends,” Riley said in Ian Thomsen’s book “The Soul of Basketball: The Epic Showdown between LeBron, Kobe, Doc and Dirk that Saved the NBA” (via ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan).

Riley added: “My beautiful plan all of a sudden came crashing down. That team in ten years could have won five or six championships.”

“I was silent,” Riley said. “I didn’t say anything. My mind began to just go. And it was over. I was very angry when LeBron left. It was personal for me. It just was.”

Riley referenced Cavs owner Dan Gilbert’s infamous 2010 letter scolding James for leaving Cleveland, saying he almost did something similar.

“I had a very good friend who talked me off the ledge and kept me from going out there and saying something like Dan Gilbert. I’m glad I didn’t do it.”

Regardless of what the context was, he shouldn’t whine even if he thought injuries played a major role, I love Pat Riley but he should stop acting bitter.

Warriors beat the Spurs without Kawhi when Kawhi was destroying them
Warriors beat the Cavs without Love/Irving
Cavs beat the Warriors without Green et al
Toronto beat the Warriors without their entire team
Chris Paul injury saving the Warriors

Wow every championship has an asterisk

It's just Pat being bitter

For a seasoned, polished basketball veteran to say this, I would guess the series loss must have HURT and is a regret he's going to carry to his grave.

After the split the two have never talked and Riley wants to beat James badly, very badly. This was for him a once in a lifetime chance for pay back, extremely unlikely to happen again, and it slipped through his hands.

I don't mind it, let the man have his moment of self pity. He's a showtime Lakers after all.

I expect bitter fans or players to say what he said but not from a well respected person like Pat Riley, either way It doesn’t matter anymore we won the title and we deserved it and a very good chance we will repeat again next year.

F*ck Riley. Once a former Laker moves on to another organization, he's the enemy. I don't give an F what he did in his time in LA if he's being an asshat.

89 Detroit Pistons beat a potential three-peat™ Lakers team that had Byron and Magic suffer hamstring injuries. Pat knows that injuries are part of the game, he's just bitter.

Ironically that was all Drill Sargent Riles fault, he burnt his team out during a near week hiatus after basically sweeping through the western conference playoffs. Lost my respect for the guy after all that.

So Pat, was the 88 title and asterisk because Isaiah Thomas was hurt?

Also, the 2 games that Dragic and Bam both played in, were the games that your team got blown off the floor.

They would have got swept with Bam amd Dragic. Bam dont spread the floor and Dragic takes the ball out of Jimmy’s hands. Jimmy would have never had those 2 insane games that won them 2 games.

At least it doesn’t have an asterisk because one team didn’t beat the other team “fair and squarely”— i.e. 2006.
