After reading the other thread I thought this would be interesting.

The 1988 Dodgers weren’t on a 32 year drought. The last championship before 1988 was in 1981. But that team did have the Kirk Gibson home run, winning both series as huge underdogs after starting off the year with low expectations, Hershiser finishing off an incredible year, revenge for the 1974 World Series, and it would continue to be talked about 32 years later. And the Dodgers had a case for being team of the 80’s (it doesn’t compare to the Lakers decade but there was a lot of parity in baseball in the 80’s and the Dodgers were often serious contenders in that decade).

The 1988 Lakers last title was in 1987 (for you guys that rooted for LA teams in the 80’s, that decade must have been great). Trying to go back-to-back, making the case for team of the 80’s, and looking back on it, it helped the 2020 team tie Boston with 17 titles (couldn’t have done it without the 88 championship or any other Laker championship). It was the last time Magic Kareem, Worthy, Scott, etc. won a title together. And a championship was guaranteed and the team delivered.
.

Next I will be doing a thread on the last time the Clippers and Dodgers won in the same year. Oh, wait a minute. Never mind.

Btw the Clippers finished in last with the worst record in the league in 1988 with a 17-65 record.

Between ‘81 and ‘88 the Dodgers were derailed in the playoffs by guys like Jack Clark and Ozzie Smith.

Pedro Guerrero’s broken leg slide set the Dodgers back in the middle of the decade. Houston’s Samson in 1986 maybe stopped the Lakers from 4 in a row, maybe 5 if Magic and Scott didn’t get injured vs Detroit in 1989.
