Notebook: GM eyes Penny, other guards
12:41 AM PST on Wednesday, March 1, 2006
Broderick Turner
LOS ANGELES - The Lakers still are searching for ways to improve, and they appear to need the most help in the backcourt.
On Tuesday, General Manager Mitch Kupchak said he spoke with Coach Phil Jackson about Penny Hardaway and Rick Brunson, veteran guards who were recently waived.
Asked if the Lakers had talked to or brought in guard Tony Delk on Monday to gauge the veteran guard's interest in joining the team, Kupchak responded with "no comment."
Kupchak said it was his understanding that Delk, who had cleared waivers after being waived by the Atlanta Hawks on Friday, was going to sign with the Detroit Pistons.
With Aaron McKie still out with a slight tear in his left quadriceps, the Lakers basically have a three-guard rotation.
"We'll continue to look at the waiver wire," Kupchak said.
Players waived by today still are eligible to be on another team's playoff roster.
Hardaway and Brunson have each played just four games this season, Delk one. Hardaway, 6-foot-7, is injury-prone at 34 but has career averages of 15.4 points and 5.1 assists. Delk and Brunson are career backups with more modest numbers.
Kupchak said the Lakers also will look at players in the developmental league.
PISTONS CORNER: Delk could be insurance at guard spots
March 1, 2006
DENVER -- Sometime today, the Pistons expectveteran point guard Tony Delk to sign as a free agent, filling the team's vacant roster spot and adding some backcourt insurance.
The Atlanta Hawks waived the 10-year veteran late last week, and Delk cleared waivers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Denver, the Los Angeles Lakers, Utah and Miami also were rumored to be in the mix to sign Delk by today, when active players must be on a roster to be eligible for the playoffs. But a Pistons source said Delk would choose Detroit.

Penny would be a nice addition to this squad. Obviously Slava can be dumped now that the Lakers failed to take advantage of his expiring K. _________________ -

He can still play, i talked with a Knicks fan and he assumed the reason Brown didn't play Penny because he wasn't on there plans.
i think Penny can help this team. |

I hope we can get Penny. For the same reasons I'd like to have Grant. Penny just KNOWS how to play the game. _________________ Stephon Marbury on Kobe: "He's the only person on 'dis earth that can do 'dat. He guards people, like shuts 'em down. How about Odom for Hill + ORL first rounder. Essentially Hill gets us out of Lamar's contract, giving us lots of cap room to sign free agents after next season. But if Hill can stay on the floor, he can also play way better than Odom even at this point in his career. Then with the likely top ten pick we go after a good PG. Or maybe take someone like Reddick who will kill teams for doubling Kobe... _________________ -

You can waive anybody. Since he is a last-year contract, they are only on the hook for the remaining games. |

Lets get Penny... why the hell not? What else do we have to lose? I mean, Kupchak would have brought a former all star to this team! _________________ “YO JEANIE, WHATS UP MY BIIIAAACCCHH!” – COCA JAMES ON 1540AM THE TICKET LAKERS ROUNDTABLE - 03/02/06

Since Penny and Brunson are possibilities, expect the Heat to try and find room on their roster! _________________ “YO JEANIE, WHATS UP MY BIIIAAACCCHH!” – COCA JAMES ON 1540AM THE TICKET LAKERS ROUNDTABLE - 03/02/06

Then Lakers should be looking for any Heat player going to be waived since they are going to sign whoever Lakers are interested in. |

Delk added to the possibilies. I'd bet he goes to the Pistons though.
Quick shot
Snippet:
Free-agent guard Tony Delk cleared waivers at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Pistons are in the running to sign Delk, but reportedly the Lakers, Heat, Suns and Nuggets are also in the mix. The deal could come as soon as this morning. |

I take it you didn't read the article where it specifically says Delk will sign with the Pistons today? He's not available.
It's Penny or Brunson. |

Get Penny!! Phil loves big gaurds and at this point in his career Penny can be no worse than Harper or Brian Shaw when they came to the Lakers. Besides he's had plenty of rest and from what I've read and heard, he just didn't play in NYC because he didn't fit into their plans. Brunson sucks and Delk is going to the Pistons. |

"Nothing is going to happen with the Nuggets," Delk's agent, Mark Bartelstein told the Rocky Mountain News.
Bartelstein said his client will either sign with Detroit or the Los Angeles Lakers, with others calling the Pistons more likely.
We've got more playing time to offer...and a possibility to start over Smush if we make the playoffs. I know it's unlikely he signs with us...but I BELIEVE. _________________ March 21, 1999:

Well, Delk would be my #1 choice, and according to that quote, I guess we're still not out of the running for him yet. But I expect him to sign with the Pistons - simply because they're the favorites to win it all this year. Not too hard to blame Tony on that one.
But I woulnd't mind Penny, IF he's healthy enough. If he is, I think he'd be a GREAT fit! The few times I've seen him play recently, his shooting and post-up game have impressed me. Penny still knows how to get it done, despite not being as athletic as he once was.
Brunson wouldn't be a bad pick-up at all. You want a veteran guard with a high B-Ball IQ? Then Brunson is your man. He's steady, professional, smart, plays strong D, hits his shots. He's not going to "wow" anyone, but he's as solid and as steady as they come. The guy knows how to play basketball.
Hey, I'm just glad we're actually trying to do something! _________________ Everything. Changes. |

I wouldn't mind getting any of the three. I think we all agree that we definitely need help in the backcourt, so adding any of them would be a boost. |
