Lightning Strikes Twice with the Thunder... Injuries have slowed the Lakers start this season. With LeBron sidelined from an abdominal strain, the Lakers will struggle to gain momentum through this easy part of their schedule.

The Thunder have certainly enjoyed facing the team as they fight through their rebuilding issues.

So we’re back to playing non-LeBron minutes...and non-LeBron/Westbrook minutes on the floor.

Vogel quadrupled down by having no LeBron and sitting Westbrook, AD and Melo during one stretch in the fourth. He really felt lost in the weeds with the rotations in this one.

The Thunder had fought back from a 19-point first half lead, reeling the Lakers in during the second quarter once again. The Lakers held tight in the third, winning that quarter by 4 points despite AD coming out of the locker room with his right thumb taped up after spraining it in the final seconds of the first half.

With a little over a minute left in this game, SGA drained a logo three to go up by 6. After a timeout, Rookie Austin Reaves knocked down a big three for the Lakers to counter. He and Melo made some big plays down the stretch.

L.A. had a chance to tie it up with Westbrook on the break, but he fumbled the ball out of bounds. He then followed that up with a head scratching defensive breakdown to give up a dunk. Despite that, we still had a chance to tie it at the buzzer as Westbrook pushed the ball up court with 7 seconds left. He pulled up and clanked a three. Just a trainwreck of a final minute from Westbrook and with that, the Lakers fell 107-104.

Somehow, the Lakers have managed to blow huge leads to the Thunder twice this season to give them their only wins. Painful.

Davis -- -- He hit his first 7 shots in the first quarter. He was active, getting into the paint for jumphooks, fades or putbacks. The perimeter shot looked smooth early. He faded a bit in his second shift of the half and he’d go 1-6 the rest of the way, finishing with 18 points and 12 boards (5 offensive). In the final seconds of the half, he injured his right thumb as he was battling for an offensive board. He sprained it. I kind of hate when the world ends for him on any bump or bruise. He didn’t get back and they easily hit a three on us. Dude, your feet work, get back. The shot didn’t look great in the second half. He banked in a jumper that was not intentional. The injury was on his shooting hand, but he did manage to hit his freethrows. He looked a bit tired in that fourth quarter and didn’t have that motor of the first quarter. The team felt it as the offense stalled out. We’re in trouble without LeBron and a limited AD. He can still cause a lot of problems defensively. The Stats: He scored 29 points on 11-20 shooting (0-1 from three, 7-9 from the line) to go with 18 boards (6 offensive), 5 assists, 1 steal, 2 blocks, 3 turnovers and 4 fouls. He was a -14.

Westbrook -- -- Wow, some really big mistakes by Westbrook down the stretch. We had a chance to tie the game and he was pushing out in transition and he lost the handle on a gather and it went right out of bounds. On the other end, he then left Dort who was under the hoop for no reason and we gave up a dunk. I have no idea what he was thinking there. That was some major brain cramp or something. He had a chance to tie at the buzzer when he pushed it up and missed a three. Not our best choice for a three, for sure, but he had sank three threes in this one. We really missed LeBron down the stretch of this one. He was putting together a decent game prior to that. The team was a +11 when he was in and a -7 when Rondo was in during the first half. You couldn’t wait for Russ to return. Not that he was great (he had some bad passes and some early offense chucks that played into the Thunder getting some momentum), but Rondo was just so poor. Russ hit a number of those left wing banks in this game. A decent game until that final minute where he killed us. The Stats: He scored 27 points on 10-23 shooting (3-6 from three, 4-4 from the line) to go with 6 boards, 5 assists, 4 turrnovers and 2 fouls in 35 minutes. He was a +6.

Bazemore -- -- Always an adventure. He missed a couple layup attempts early but AD cleaned them both up. He got his points getting fouled pushing out a turnover. His best play might have been a drive and dish to AD rolling for the dunk. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 0-4 shooting (0-2 from three, 2-2 from the line) to go with 2 boards, 2 assists and 1 foul in 22 minutes. He was a -12.

Jordan -- -- The problem with DJ defensively is a couple of things. First, he does not cover a lot of ground. Guys need to come to him. If he has to make up any space it’s typically only a few feet. The second issue is once he’s committed to a challenge or a close out, usually that the end of the effort there. There’s no second effort. You get those things with Dwight with much more frequency. No lob action for Jordan tonight offensively. The Stats: He scored 1 points on 0-2 shooting (1-2 from the line) to go with 3 offensive boards, 1 turnover and 1 foul in 14 minutes. He was a +5.

Bradley -- -- He swished a big, high arching three with 3:24 left to cut the lead to 2. Some excellent off ball cutting when the Thunder started sending help in the third quarter to our post players. On one, Bradley cut from the wing and Melo found him for a layup. On the other, his man left him to pressure AD and Bradley scored on the baseline. The Stats: He scored 9 points on 4-7 shooting (1-2 from three) to go with 3 boards, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover and 4 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a -5.

Anthony -- -- Another 5-10 from three at home and 21 points off the bench. He hit some big threes down the stretch, including one with 8.8 seconds left, to keep the guys close. He missed a couple of big ones earlier, but we need to lean on him. With LeBron out we’re depending on him for more on both ends. So some big shots in the heat of the battle, but also need him defending well enough. We had him out there for our stops off deadballs. Normally, that’s LeBron. But he worked it out decently. “We shouldn’t have lost this one. It ain’t come down to LeBron,” he said afterward. Indeed. I really can’t ask more from Melo than we are getting. It’s been a little bit of a resurgence for him so far in L.A. Diving into some minor details that could play out bigger later, I liked seeing him handle some of those double teams offensively. He found some open shooters instead of forcing it. That’s promising as he’s usually locked in on shooting. Overall, good enough game from Melo for us to have taken this one. The Stats: He scored 21 points on 8-18 shooting (5-10 from three) to go with 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover and 3 fouls in 32 minutes. He was a +1.

Howard -- -- I really, really don’t understand the usage of Dwight this game. One of the reasons we lost was Vogels odd sub patterns. Dwight just getting 8 minutes, especially after the team had it’s best stretch of ball with him on the first half, seems like mismanagement of your roster. He gave the team some instant spark to start the second quarter, reading a set play to block a man at the rim. He then had Dort trying to drive on him and Dwight smothered him. A Melo three forced a timeout on the other end. That’s how we want that second unit to do it. I’m surprised they didn’t bring him back to close the half as we cycled back into our starters. We needed the defense. So Dwight finished the half a +13 with his 2 steals and 1 block in just 6 minutes. Vogel started AD in the fourth quarter instead of Dwight. AD looked like he faded during the fourth and was tired/settling for things at times. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-1 shooting to go with 4 boards, 2 steals, 1 block and no fouls in 8 minutes. He was a +8.

Reaves -- -- Just need to give some credit here to Jesse Buss and the scouting staff. This is an undrafted rookie playing in crunch time, balling on D and sinking one of the biggest shots of the game, a three with a minute left right after the Thunder thought they hit the dagger three with that bomb from SGA. Big time shot. Defensively, though, he’s really, really looking good. I mean guys are struggling to shake him off the dribble and when they get a step on him, he’s still hanging tight and challenging. He’s getting some rookie calls, too, but in a team of veterans, it’s the rookie who is looking sharper then all of them on his rotations. It’s not that what he’s doing is disruptive everytime, but he’s just making teams make extra play after extra play and allowing our defense to recover. I can’t even imagine if we had both him and AC on this team. Those two do so many of those little things that cause an offense problems. Early on, he had some good D on Giddey forcing him to pass, then immediately hustled to challenge the shot off that. He was put in jail off a screen, but switched on to AD’s man and stripped the ball from him for the steal. He stayed in front of his man who tried to shake him several times, but was called for a bit of a bogus foul at the rim when he got the stop. He took a charge to save a teammate as he read him getting beat and stepped in. He had a stop on a Dort drive late in the game. Feels like his D is becoming consistently better by the game. I mean, we should not be depending on him like this, but he’s answering the call. Offensively, he drained a sideline three with the shotclock low. He changed directions in transition off the three line and scored a layup (should have been an And-1). He had a sweet LeBron-like angled bounce pass to AD rolling to set him up for FTs. And then he hit that big three with 1:08 left on a kickout. “If you get a lead like that, you’ve got to keep your foot on the gas,” Reaves said. The Stats: He scored 8 points on 3-6 shooting (2-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 steal and 2 fouls in 22 minutes. He was a +0.

Monk -- -- Not much to his game unfortunately tonight. With LeBron out, we could use a little scoring punch with some of these odd lineups. He scored 2 points on a banked floater while working the two-man game. The Stats: He scored 2 points on 1-3 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 1 board, 2 assists and 2 fouls in 13 minutes. He was a +6.

Ellington -- -- He was firing like crazy in his first shift. A lot of attempts on the move. The one he made was a simple open corner three. Everything else missed as he went 1-6, taking five threes and making one. He did have a nice two-man sequence with Dwight on an ATO. That play works well for our shooting guards to be momentary playmakers. Little impact in this one. The Stats: He scored 3 points on 1-6 shooting (1-5 from three) to go with 2 boards, 1 assist and no foul in 9 minutes. He was a -3.

Rondo -- -- Just killing me tonight. He was -7 in his 7 first half minutes. The Thunder run to close the half started when Rondo came in for Russ in that second quarter. He threw a couple of turnovers. Combine that with some bad D in the first half and the Thunder capitalized while he was out there. In the second half, he some attempts at the rim that he couldn’t finish. His best idea was not challenging the Thunder on a drive in transition and instead finding Melo trailing for a three. The drop from LeBron to Rondo when Russ is out is tough to be competitive. The Stats: He didn’t score on 0-4 shooting (0-1 from three) to go with 2 boards, 4 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers and 2 fouls in 15 minutes. He was a -7.

Vogel -- -- Key Moment: So many really. You could go back to the first half where we blew the 19-point lead. The Thunder reeled the Lakers in during that same stretch late in the first half as they did last time. Down the stretch of this one, so many key plays. Melo missed a wide open wing three, we gave up a three on the other end. Melo forced a drive, missed and then the Thunder threw what looked like the dagger with a logo three from SGA with 1:18 left to go up by 6. Reaves cut it to three with 1:07 left with a huge three on a kickout. Melo big three with 8.8 to cut it to 1. In between that with about 22 seconds left, Russ was pushing it up in transition, getting ready to gather and just fumbled it away. That was a killer possession. Then he had bonehead defensive play leaving Dort under the hoop for a dunk in that final minute. Painful.

Key Substitution: He was in the weeds with his rotations. At one point in the fourth, he sat both Russ and AD. Then he put Melo beside them. No idea what’s going through his head during this stretch. I also don’t understand the little use of Dwight tonight.

Key Stats: Blowing a 19-point lead after doing the same dance against OKC as before. That’s hard to swallow. The Lakers lost the fourth quarter 35-24.

Thanks DB for doing this after a painful one.

Not gonna lie. Getting really sick of this crap by this team. Boneheaded plays, decisions, and calls from top to bottom.

Veteran-laden team are acting like rookies

Youth-laden team are performing like veterans

Veteran-laden team didn't have leadership to show the way

Youth-laden team had no fear of the Lakers whileplaying like they had nothing to lose

In this game, which player came close to consistently playing with the "Black Mamba" Mentality????

This game showed us again that when LeBron is out, Westbrook's impulsive decision making will have us playing on the edge.

When LeBron plays, Westbrook's decision making and shot selection are pretty solid, especially the past few games.

Westbrook is fitting in well with the team (when mostly whole), but when he has to be the only table-setter out there, we have to live and die with him.

My only real concern with this team is injuries. If we get and stay healthy we should be fine in the long run, even on the defensive end.

With Reaves putting in maximum effort almost every play, it really stands out that this team lacks players willing to do the dirty work. It’s likely that Austin is going to hit a wall putting in this much effort so early, but we do need a better mix of would-be stars and workmanlike players. Ironically, Caruso is exactly what we need in that regard.

Wholeheartedly agree on Dwight. He had a very good stint in the first half but only played what 6 minutes? Then only a couple in the second and that was with that terribly mismatched lineup.

The only thing I could think of when watching it is that maybe Dwight's neck is still bothering him and he was trying to limit his minutes. If he was healthy I don't get it.

Thanks DB. Well, didn't watch this one. Had the perfect opportunity but preferred Netflix. Kind of saw this coming. Live in Oklahoma and seeing OKC win twice? No thank you. Just not feeling it right now. Not worth staying up past midnight in the Central time zone. Hopefully the Lakers will snap out of this soon. However, I still look forward to your recaps.

The minutes seem to be about getting as many players a shot at getting their reps in. And some development, instead of going for the immediate wins.

For example, we just won 2 straight with AD starting at the 5. Yet we went back to AD at the 4. Not that I am against it, but it shows the Lakers aren't really playing to win each game as the only priority, it is also with some plan for the longrun in there.

We can all argue about whether that longrun plan even is right, but that is why I think the minutes and rotations are so out of whack. I mean, I really thought AD would be starting at the 5 yesterday, seeing as the Lakers could exploit a better defender in there and get more floor spacing for Westbrook (and AD). We had two straight wins this way and had some momentum of reps and elite paint play (78 points). Then we went back to AD at the 4, and turned into a heavy perimeter game from Westbrook, and rest. When AD is out at the 5, the paint opens up more for quality attacks and more fastbreaks too. Not so picky with Frank's rotations, because I'm quite sure he's trying to install some reps and rhythm for guys like Ellington, Rondo, DAJ, Monk etc. It's so early in the season, and I'm sure Frank knows at some point he will crack the rotation down to 9 same guys each night.

The game was still one we should have closed out and won just like OKC game 1. Game 2 against OKC again, should have won. But in the end to win consistently in the RS you need an elite defense or offense. We have neither an offense that is so elite that it can't go cold. Nor do we have a defense that is elite that can win us games when the O goes dry. As soon as our O goes dry, we cough up leads.

Westbrook's decision making, you just have to deal with it. It cost us this game but when Lebron is available, those plays in the clutch should be run by him.

I don't look forward to the Blazers road game. That's gonna be tough.

The only bright side I see so far this season is that at least show we have talent and some pieces. Westbrook, AD, Bron all all-stars. Melo is playing like an all-star. But we have not even close to the cohesion, and we don't have enough defensive firepower at the perimeter right now.

I think to become elite, we need to play AD at the 5 with Westbrook lineups. At least it will allow us to open up the paint to be an elite paint team on offense. Right now, we are neither an elite team on offense or D. Moving AD to the 5 with Westbrook lineups (he can play 4 in non-RW lineups) would allow us to be elite on offense, at least.

the start of the 4th quarter with both Westbrook and AD on the bench killed us. that was an extended drought. coaching stuff was really dumb for that. Rondo clearly was ineffective.

Honestly, I struggled to find the words for Russ’s defensive miscue in the last minute. It was like he saw a squirrel and just forgot everything else. It made no sense on any level of basketball.

Agree with most of your points

Playing the Trailblazers is actually a good thing because the players will be much more focused (productive is another question).

Yes, Vogel is seemingly using these "preseason games" (especially against teams like OKC) as opportunities to experiment, discover which combination of players work best together, give players needed reps and to developed players/cohesion.

Hopefully Vogel will implement defensive schemes that funnel players to specific zones to capitalize on DJ's strengths while limiting teams taking advantage of his weaknesses.

Buddy Hield vs RUSSELL WESTBROOK
Obvioiusly Buddy is a much more consistent shooter, but can he lead the 2nd team when LBJ or AD are on the bench, nope

Rob obviously feel that have a much stronger second unit is more important than a lockdown outside shooter - if th team has players such as Nunn, Monk, LBJ, Ellington and Melo

Caruso > Schroeder
