Jim Jackson Signed, Medvedenko Released
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
March 6, 2006

With an eye to the immediate future, the Lakers said goodbye to part of their past, signing free-agent swingman Jim Jackson and waiving injured forward Slava Medvedenko.

Jackson, 35, will be asked to add a veteran presence and outside touch to a team that has shot inconsistently throughout the season but is fighting for a playoff spot.

On his 12th team in 14 seasons, Jackson played in 27 games this season before being released by the Phoenix Suns last week, averaging 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 15.6 minutes. He has not played since Jan. 4 but was practicing with the Suns until he was waived. His minutes were reduced this season when Phoenix added Eddie House and James Jones.

Jackson, the fourth overall pick in the 1992 draft, averaged 8.8 points and 3.9 rebounds last season for a Phoenix team that won a league-best 62 games and lost to San Antonio in the Western Conference finals.

Jackson, 6 feet 6 and 220 pounds, will be paid about $500,000, his contract contingent on passing a physical today in Los Angeles. It is not expected to be a problem.

Medvedenko, who will be 27 next month, played only two games this season and underwent season-ending surgery in January for a herniated disk in his back.

Signed as a free agent in August 2000, Medvedenko played on two Laker championship teams. He was re-signed to a two-year, $6-million deal before the 2004-05 season but played only 23 games after that because of injuries and ineffectiveness.

For his career, Medvedenko has averaged 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 249 games.

Brown comes through
By Ross Siler, Staff Writer

Kwame Brown hadn't faced Ben Wallace since he and Lakers coach Phil Jackson sat down for their talk last month, the one where Jackson asked Brown whether he could be happy with a game like Wallace had earlier this season against Minnesota.

The Pistons' All-Star center went scoreless that night but finished with 17 rebounds as Detroit won. Even so, Brown told Jackson he would like to score, at least a little, even if his role with the Lakers is defined by defense and rebounding.

Jackson questioned whether his message had gotten through, even though Brown played as if it had Saturday as the Lakers beat the Pistons 105-94. Brown finished with just three points but pulled down 12 rebounds to Wallace's five in the game.

Brown also was on the court when the Lakers broke open the game with an 18-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters and played strong defense against Rasheed Wallace, who went 1 for 10 in the second half, 0 for 6 from 3-point range.

Rasheed Wallace went 5 of 5 in the first quarter and totaled 12 points, with Brian Cook struggling to cover him as he connected on two 3-pointers and posted up Cook on an 8-foot turnaround. But Brown was the difference in the second half.

"I think that Kwame coming in, did a great job on Rasheed," Kobe Bryant said. "In the first half, he kind of set the tone for them in the post and on the perimeter. And Kwame really did a great job of being physical with him and taking him off of his sweet spot."

Lakers rise to level of their competition

By KEVIN DING
The Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES – Lakers coach Phil Jackson had theorized in the days before the arrival of the Detroit Pistons that this challenging stretch of opponents for his team would impel the Lakers to go into the game and "play fourth-quarter basketball instead of third-quarter basketball."

Given the way the Lakers' minds have wandered in third quarters this season, that was the best way to explain it. And after the Lakers hung with Detroit from the start and then actually rallied in the third quarter, Jackson was proved correct for one game - with upcoming dates against San Antonio tonight, New Orleans/Oklahoma City on Wednesday and San Antonio again Friday still to come.

For the Lakers to play well in a third quarter was something of a breakthrough on its own, but the fourth quarter Saturday night was when they really pinned some demons to the mat.

A 10-0 run to end the third quarter gave the Lakers an 80-78 lead. Then came the fourth, and as a pleasant surprise to Jackson, there was no automatic letdown that has plagued the Lakers after successes all season.

Lakers sign Jim Jackson
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Lakers signed free agent swingman Jim Jackson on Monday and waived forward Slava Medvedenko to make room on the roster.

Terms of Jackson's contract were not released, general manager Mitch Kupchak said.

Jackson was in Los Angeles and was to be in uniform for Monday night's game against the San Antonio Spurs, the Lakers said. He did not take part in the team's shootaround earlier in the day, so it was unknown if he would play.

Jackson, who was waived by the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday, is a 13-year NBA veteran with career averages of 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 872 games.

"Jim Jackson has been a solid player for many years in the NBA and we feel he'll be a good addition to our team," Kupchak said in a statement. "Being such a young team, he gives us veteran savvy as well as the ability to play multiple positions."
