How come Phil Jackson never saw this? On the 4th quarter, I think the Lakers were doing a 2-3 zone
which focuses more on the paint. It just wasn't working and the 3 point line were just widely open. They should've switched to Man to Man defense.

You know what though?

That is exactly what we did against the Spurs 2 years ago in the playoffs and won.

The difference?

Finley is taking Turkoglu's shots
Manu is taking Bowen's shots

They are just sooo much better from the perimeter than they were 2 years ago.

To beat the Spurs you must be able to defend inside by your bigs alone. That's why the Wallace's (and the Pistons) whopped em twice.

Can't blame Phil.

I will say this. Next season I want Phil to start Bynum and Kwame against the Spurs just to see what sort of impact that makes on the game.

Like Phil said in the press conference, we will see if they can make those 3's on Friday.

Bottom Line is they got the 3's to fall. They shot over 50% on threes.

That hasn't been the norm for the Spurs this season. It was just the way it fell. You have to crowd the paint against the Spurs or TP will run a layup line.

Have you guys watched the Spurs this season?
The game plan was fine, if the 3's would of fallen at more like say 35% like they usually do for the Spurs, we could of won.

Exactly. Finley couldn't miss. I knew we were going to lose when Finley kept hitting shots. Ya he had some open looks but 4-5 of his shots were contested and not easy shots. I think he shot 8 of 9 with the majority of those shots being 3's. He doesn't hit all those shots Lakers win.

San Antonio isn't 47-12 for nothing! They're also 21-9 on the road. If they're hitting those treys, there aren't many teams that can beat them. BTW, it wasn't the 4th quarter that was the problem, Lakers outscored the Spurs 32-24 in the 4th.

Your right there 47 and 12 because they score in the paint. They started shooting all those 3's cause they couldn't score in the paint and that is what the Laker Defense wal allowing. We will see what happens on Friday, I think the Lakers will take it Friday.

Considering this same team hung in and beat arguably the best team, and were even in the game with the Spurs up until the middle of the 3rd quarter, there is cause for optimism. But I digress, clearly you were trying to mock in a constructive thread.

The defense was GOOD. Finley and Ginobili just picked that night to shoot lights out. THEY WILL NOT do it again Friday.

The Spurs, as team, shoot almost 38% from downtown (7th best). Even if they had shot their average, it would have been 9 treys instead of 12. The Lakers just gave them too many open looks, so they took them.

The Spurs don't rely heavily on treys. When you have a strong post game, guards who can get to the rim, and solid offensive rebounding and team defense you don't have to. But just because they don't take a lot of treys, doesn't mean they aren't capable of making them. Manu, Bowen, Van Exel, Finley, and Barry are all good shooters from distance. There were points in the game when three of them would be on the floor at the same time and if the Lakers are going to give them those shots you can't count on shooters as good as them to keep missing.

Actually, the defensive scheme worked 3 out of 4 quarters. We won the 1st, 2nd and 4th quarters, but blew the 3rd. That means the defensive concepts were sound and working when we executed them.

No need to throw out the baby with the bathwater. Sometimes it isn't about the concepts, but about the execution.

yea i know it's the 3rd quarter where the root problem is, but if we did better defensively on the 4th, we would've possibly won the game by reducing their points especially on the 3 point line where they were hot, I personally think because it was the terrible defense on the outside. The Defense was just not working.
