Hornets play their first game in New Orleans after Katrina, but, like the Saints, it's still unclear if they'll weather the storm for the long haul
By Mark Heisler, Times Staff Writer
March 8, 2006

NEW ORLEANS — In a rare intersection of sports and real life, the Lakers, for whom tonight represents one game in the NBA standings, will meet the New Orleans Hornets, for whom it's also a glimpse of what their future might hold.

Everyone else here, from the people attending to those who don't know New Orleans has an NBA team or don't care, has more at stake in what is a landmark in rebuilding their devastated home.

"There are things that have emotional or symbolic importance, that have the effect of lifting your spirit," said Stephen Perry, head of the city's Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"This is one of those. … It's certain key restaurants opening, things like the arena opening this week, some of the museums."

It will be the city's first professional sports event since Hurricane Katrina made landfall Aug. 29, and one of three games the Hornets will play here this month.

Now based in Oklahoma City, the team is scheduled to play six games here next season. NBA officials have announced their intention of returning the team full-time for the 2007-08 season.

George Could Sit, but Jackson Ready
By Lonnie White, Times Staff Writer
March 8, 2006

Devean George severely sprained his right wrist in the Lakers' 103-96 loss to San Antonio on Monday and might miss tonight's game at New Orleans.

It's uncertain when George, who scored two points on one-of-six shooting against the Spurs, injured his wrist, but if he can't play against the Hornets, veteran Jim Jackson said he would be ready to make his Laker debut.

"I'm in good shape because all I've been doing is working out a lot," said Jackson, 35, who hasn't played in a game since Jan. 4 when he was with Phoenix. "It might have been a blessing for me not to put that pounding on my body."

Jackson, who signed with the Lakers on Monday after being released by the Suns a week ago, practiced with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday.

"He was moving pretty well and he has a pretty good idea of what to do," Coach Phil Jackson said. "He's still not in rhythm of the offense or things like that, but he has a pretty good feel for what's going on."

Will Jim Jackson play tonight?

New addition sees potential
By Vincent Bonsignore, Staff Writer

One practice into his two-day career with the Lakers, Jim Jackson knows this much about his new team: The distance between the Lakers and the top teams in the league doesn't necessarily come down to talent.

The Lakers signed Jackson on Monday after he was released by the Phoenix Suns. The 14-year NBA veteran has played for 12 teams over his long career so he brings the perspective of experience to his young teammates.

"There's not a lot that separates the great teams in this league from the team's right below them," Jackson said. "It usually comes down to the little things making the biggest difference. You look at the veteran leadership on teams like San Antonio and Detroit and it's enough to give them that edge.

"(The Lakers) have a lot of talent, just (not) the maturity level from the standpoint of basketball players having gone through things."

The key is gaining that experience, a process Jackson deems essential and ongoing.

"(We're) not far away, yet far away," Jackson said.

At Walton's House, There Were No Set Plays
By Larry Stewart, Times Staff Writer
March 8, 2006

Although Bill Walton now works in television, he says his family didn't have a TV set when he was growing up in San Diego, even through he, his two brothers and his sister "bugged my parents relentlessly to get us one."

Walton says in Eddie Einhorn's book, "How March Became Madness," that his parents couldn't afford a TV.

Finally, his mom announced one night that they had saved enough money to buy one. But his mom, a librarian, said, "I've been doing a lot of research and I've decided there's nothing worth watching, so we're not going to get one."

Newcomer Jackson hopes to be given a regular role

By AL BALDERAS
The Orange County Register

EL SEGUNDO – Jim Jackson made his practice debut with the Lakers on Tuesday, but it could take some time before he is able to perform in front of a crowd at Staples Center.

Lakers coach Phil Jackson said he has not set a timeline as to when the former Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns player will make his Lakers debut. Jim Jackson, 35, was waived by the Suns last week and signed a contract with the Lakers on Monday.

"He's got a pretty good idea of what to do," the coach said. "He's still not in rhythm with the offense and things like that, but he has a pretty good feel for what's going on."

The guard/forward doesn't mind waiting for the opportunity to play, as long as he's in the loop. That's one courtesy he said wasn't shown him in Phoenix, where he appeared in 27 games. He started once.

"It was frustrating, but what was probably more frustrating than anything else was the lack of communication," Jim Jackson said. "You can deal somewhat with not playing but when you don't have the communication like you had before, that's probably more disappointing than not playing."

Lakers focused on win in New Orleans return

01:34 AM PST on Wednesday, March 8, 2006

Broderick Turner

NEW ORLEANS - This game has more significance than just the Lakers and New Orleans Hornets playing each other and trying to hold on to their tenuous playoff spots.

When the Lakers meet the Hornets tonight at the New Orleans Arena, it will be the first professional game played in this city since Hurricane Katrina devastated it last August.

Many people lost their lives. Many lost their homes and livelihood. Many were forced to leave behind the only city in which they have ever lived.

The hurricane was one of the biggest natural disasters in U. S. history and the city known for its partying, drinking, dancing and revelry has yet to recover and may still be years away.

But against that backdrop, the NBA has decided to come back here for a game between the Lakers and Hornets.

The Hornets moved to Oklahoma City to play their "home games" away from New Orleans and are returning for the first time since the devastation.

A sellout crowd is expected, and all the players appreciate the small role they will play in helping New Orleans get back some normalcy.

"Sports sometimes heals the soul," Lamar Odom said. "Everybody needs sports. Hopefully we can go down there and give them a good show."

The show is important, but the Lakers also need a victory.

Kobe Bryant's competitiveness, focus has propeled him to the top
Wednesday, March 08, 2006
By John Reid
Staff writer

In making sure he started on the course to become one of the league's top players, Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant would show up for practices before everyone else as a rookie during the 1996-97 season.

Once practice started, Bryant pushed so hard that whenever the backup unit he played on lost to the Shaquille' O'Neal-led starters, it would upset him.

"He would get mad at teammates if they didn't compete or made mistakes," said Del Harris, who was the Lakers' head coach during Bryant's rookie season. "He competed in practice as hard as he did in the games. The most obvious characteristic about him was just how focused he was on being the best basketball player."

In nine seasons with the Lakers, Bryant has seen plenty of teammates and coaches come and go. However, what remains persistent is his drive to set the standard for others to follow.

Going into tonight's game against the Hornets at New Orleans Arena, Bryant is the league's top scorer, with a 35.1 average. In the past eight games, he has averaged more than 37 points. Bryant has scored 40 or more points 18 times.

Hornets back in New Orleans, host Lakers
The last time the Hornets played in New Orleans was on April 20, 2005 when they lost to the Clippers, 86-75.

New Orleans/Oklahoma City enters tonight's game on a three-game losing streak. On Monday, Boris Diaw had 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead the Phoenix Suns to a 101-88 win over the Hornets at the Ford Center.

David West had 22 points and eight boards and rookie phenom Chris Paul ended with 14 points and 11 assists for the Hornets, who scored just nine points in the final quarter and have lost five of their last seven games overall.

The Hornets are 19-10 at home this season. They are scheduled to host the Indiana Pacers on Friday and the New Jersey Nets on Sunday at the Ford Center.

The Lakers hope to get back on the winning track as they play the first of a brief two-game road trip. On Monday, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Michael Finley all netted 21 points to help lead the San Antonio Spurs over the Lakers, 103-96, at the AT&T Center.

Kobe Bryant had a game-high 43 points on 17-of-32 shooting in the loss to San Antonio for the Lakers, who lost for the first time in three games. Lamar Odom ended with 13 points in defeat.
